Ed...if you were a 'member' you'd have a feature called 'messages since your last visit', where clicking on a list brings you to a specific message, with the number listed .... I noticed we were past it, so I just went up and down the list, closing in on it,....

Also if you look at the full URL for a message, it includes the parameters for the HTTP query -- and mebedded therein is the number of the message. Eg: www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=36364&messages=4#501404.

I don't generally clickon particular messages in threads, so hadn't noticed that.

Mind you, whenever I've linked to a specific post in a thread before, I've not noticed that format. Is it a recent change?

One does wonder where some people find the time & what their reading and typing speeds are. Mousethief has managed 5000 in just over 10 months! My average is just under 50 a month in one year of membership & I feel like I spend way too much time on it.

The number you all see is a bit off because of deleted messages and early development issues. This message will make our total at 498,433 so far, so we are getting mighty close to half a million and 5 years of forum. Wow. It's 750MB of data.

Gee, Amos, my dear . . . With three years and four months of Mudcat membership under my belt, I've only racked up 3,152 posts (that's 3,153 with this one, of course)! Let's see, 3,152 divided by 40 (months) equals an average of 78.8 posts per month, right? I guess the rug-scrubbing injury and the move to The Moon on the Hill really cut into my 'Cat time -- Boy, do I have some posting to make up for -- ;-)

Just a little advertisement here . . . If you all are really impressed with the number of messages you've posted yourself on this forum, then show your appreciation for this wonderful opportunity that Max has given you by SENDING HIM SOME MONEY TO KEEP THE MUDCAT GOING! Well, thank God it was a thoughtful comment from a self-acclaimed newcomer. We welcome her! The Cat is a wonderful resource.

However.

Over the past couple weeks this place has been positively testy with all these "deportment," who flamed who threads. Our civility and tolerance levels seem to be down. Is it a 'hot summer" or a full (fool) moon? Other threads are having discussions over imposing rules where only civility need apply.

Is there anyway you guys can crash the site for a couple weeks to send us all to "Time Out"? I bet that would get things calmed down a bit as we all suffer our personal withdrawals from the community. I don't think I'm kidding here.

Max, you, Joe, the Penne person and Susan do a lot for this community and are to be commended.

Ain't no thing Ed.........It's a pretty regular as clockwork kinda' burp we have around here. You can count on it happening every few months and we generally spend about a week hashing it around and then all gets back t normal. This one is only a little irritating in comparison to some of the "knock-down/drag-out" types we've had in the past.

OK, here's something that just crossed my mind. I gather that a person's "number of posts" is fairly easy to compile (for those who like compiling things), and certainly "worthwhile content" is subjective to a huge degree, but how bout "length of post"? I'm sure that a lot of folks' "big numbers" are made up primarily of "one liners", "me toos", and "Awesomes", so how about "most voluable"?

Many of my posts have gone on at great length about technical minutia related to "picking styles, scales, chord variations and the like. Another area where I've written literally thousands of words has been in the "anecdotes from 30 years of travelling and playing" department. Before the great "Anonymous flame wars" of two years ago made it personally dangerous, I also volunteered tonnes of personal info, and philisophical blah, blah.

So is it possible to see who, on average, yaks the most? Even though I've never had the time to get into the "tavern", "story and songwriting", and many general threads, I've got to think my average output of blither and blather is pretty high.

Hmmm, now that I think this over a bit, it occurs to me that even the most dedicated "stats hobbiest" would want big bucks to compile that sort of stuff.

Whoops, another 4 paragraphs.....the numbers keep mounting!

I'd say that finding lyrics for people, answering technical questions, contributing lyrics and/or midis to the songbook and/or DT, justifies a certain number of "fluff" postings. I'm happy with my ratio. At least, if you look up my name, not all of my postings are attacks and flame-like insinuations. Let the sinless avoid getting stoned.

hey, Rick, I have 'heard' of word counting programs, but getting all the posts together to DO the counting might be tricky...I suspect Max could write some little routine that would go on a search and total up the words by counting blanks, but it would mess up on ME, when I use my.....ummmmm....interminable dots as punctuation!
