Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: GUEST,Ed Date: 08 Jul 01 - 06:26 PM Bill, I'm curious as to how you tracked this, your link ends with #500000, but normally the URL for individual messages doesn't display that information. Ed who started with nothing, and has hardly any of it left |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Bill D Date: 08 Jul 01 - 06:33 PM Ed...if you were a 'member' you'd have a feature called 'messages since your last visit', where clicking on a list brings you to a specific message, with the number listed .... I noticed we were past it, so I just went up and down the list, closing in on it,.... |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Amos Date: 08 Jul 01 - 06:36 PM Also if you look at the full URL for a message, it includes the parameters for the HTTP query -- and mebedded therein is the number of the message. Eg: www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=36364&messages=4#501404. Regards, A |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: GUEST,Ed Date: 08 Jul 01 - 09:14 PM Amos, I don't generally clickon particular messages in threads, so hadn't noticed that. Mind you, whenever I've linked to a specific post in a thread before, I've not noticed that format. Is it a recent change? Maybe I just missed it. Ed |

Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jul 01 - 05:56 AM Aw c'mon......Get the numbers right and give poor Mousethief a break! He's an interesting guy! BUT, he's not in the same league with kat and I. Mousethief has made only 4998 posts. On the other hand kat has made 11,851 and this one makes 12,350 for me. Insult people all you want there Guest, but get your facts straight dumbass!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Kim C Date: 09 Jul 01 - 10:03 AM So what if she does? It don't make me no never mind. There's room for everyone on my bus. I haven't been to count my posts lately. It would only go to show me how much time I waste. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Amos Date: 09 Jul 01 - 11:00 AM Over 4500, but I been hanging longer nor Mousethief -- he must have fallen hard when he fell for the Cat. :>) A |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Burke Date: 09 Jul 01 - 11:16 AM One does wonder where some people find the time & what their reading and typing speeds are. Mousethief has managed 5000 in just over 10 months! My average is just under 50 a month in one year of membership & I feel like I spend way too much time on it. |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Max Date: 09 Jul 01 - 12:39 PM The number you all see is a bit off because of deleted messages and early development issues. This message will make our total at 498,433 so far, so we are getting mighty close to half a million and 5 years of forum. Wow. It's 750MB of data. |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Bill D Date: 09 Jul 01 - 12:52 PM as musicians, we will all be happy to get a 'GIG' *grin* |

Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: wysiwyg Date: 09 Jul 01 - 01:40 PM Gosh, Max, does that mean Mudcat threads could be archived onto CDs? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: katlaughing Date: 09 Jul 01 - 02:35 PM thanks for setting the records straight, Spaw and Max...**BG** |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Mrrzy Date: 09 Jul 01 - 02:50 PM I did just spend quite a while trying to figure out when my first post was... hadn't thought of counting them. Hmmm. What a measure of time well spent, eh! And yes, BillD, I like the serendipity! |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Noreen Date: 09 Jul 01 - 03:02 PM Mrrzy, if you click on your name above the date on the posting you've just made, it brings up a list of all you've ever posted, in chronological order.... no need to spend time working it out! |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Bill D Date: 09 Jul 01 - 04:32 PM interesting...I have just under 4,600 posts since Jan of '97...and only about 60-70 of those did I personally start. |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: mousethief Date: 09 Jul 01 - 04:41 PM Websters says "methodology" means "a body of methods , rules, and postulates employed by a discipline : a particular procedure or set of procedures" Only 4998? Dang, I'd better get busy! Alex |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: SDShad Date: 09 Jul 01 - 05:42 PM Well, no wonder no one's made any aspersive cracks about me arse! I've only made 523 posts in over a year (including my long winter hibernation). I'd best get crackin'! Shad |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Áine Date: 09 Jul 01 - 06:03 PM Gee, Amos, my dear . . . With three years and four months of Mudcat membership under my belt, I've only racked up 3,152 posts (that's 3,153 with this one, of course)! Let's see, 3,152 divided by 40 (months) equals an average of 78.8 posts per month, right? I guess the rug-scrubbing injury and the move to The Moon on the Hill really cut into my 'Cat time -- Boy, do I have some posting to make up for -- ;-) Just a little advertisement here . . . If you all are really impressed with the number of messages you've posted yourself on this forum, then show your appreciation for this wonderful opportunity that Max has given you by SENDING HIM SOME MONEY TO KEEP THE MUDCAT GOING! Sorry for yelling, but it was a great opportunity to get your attention for the benefit of the Mudcat. -- Áine ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 01 - 01:52 PM Take out the inner clique's rage-messages to guests and you'll be down to about 275,000 posts.

Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: UB Ed Date: 11 Jul 01 - 03:56 PM Well, thank God it was a thoughtful comment from a self-acclaimed newcomer. We welcome her! The Cat is a wonderful resource. However. Over the past couple weeks this place has been positively testy with all these "deportment," who flamed who threads. Our civility and tolerance levels seem to be down. Is it a 'hot summer" or a full (fool) moon? Other threads are having discussions over imposing rules where only civility need apply. Is there anyway you guys can crash the site for a couple weeks to send us all to "Time Out"? I bet that would get things calmed down a bit as we all suffer our personal withdrawals from the community. I don't think I'm kidding here. Max, you, Joe, the Penne person and Susan do a lot for this community and are to be commended. Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Jul 01 - 04:08 PM Ain't no thing Ed.........It's a pretty regular as clockwork kinda' burp we have around here. You can count on it happening every few months and we generally spend about a week hashing it around and then all gets back t normal. This one is only a little irritating in comparison to some of the "knock-down/drag-out" types we've had in the past. Now go and enjoy the stuff that brought you here to begin with!! It's good to have you around. Spaw |

Just the kind of information guests need who are checking into Norman Bates' motel! All

Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Bill D Date: 12 Jul 01 - 11:23 AM only in Mudcat could #500,000 be numbered 503,316...and be followed by a sarcastic jibe from some dis-enchanted turkey who don't much like the place! |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Rick Fielding Date: 12 Jul 01 - 01:14 PM Half a million? Holy cow! OK, here's something that just crossed my mind. I gather that a person's "number of posts" is fairly easy to compile (for those who like compiling things), and certainly "worthwhile content" is subjective to a huge degree, but how bout "length of post"? I'm sure that a lot of folks' "big numbers" are made up primarily of "one liners", "me toos", and "Awesomes", so how about "most voluable"? Many of my posts have gone on at great length about technical minutia related to "picking styles, scales, chord variations and the like. Another area where I've written literally thousands of words has been in the "anecdotes from 30 years of travelling and playing" department. Before the great "Anonymous flame wars" of two years ago made it personally dangerous, I also volunteered tonnes of personal info, and philisophical blah, blah. So is it possible to see who, on average, yaks the most? Even though I've never had the time to get into the "tavern", "story and songwriting", and many general threads, I've got to think my average output of blither and blather is pretty high. Hmmm, now that I think this over a bit, it occurs to me that even the most dedicated "stats hobbiest" would want big bucks to compile that sort of stuff. Whoops, another 4 paragraphs.....the numbers keep mounting! Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: mousethief Date: 12 Jul 01 - 01:25 PM I'd say that finding lyrics for people, answering technical questions, contributing lyrics and/or midis to the songbook and/or DT, justifies a certain number of "fluff" postings. I'm happy with my ratio. At least, if you look up my name, not all of my postings are attacks and flame-like insinuations. Let the sinless avoid getting stoned. Alex |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: MMario Date: 12 Jul 01 - 01:49 PM this makes 7934 for me over 47 months - a tad over 169 a month - or an average of 5.6 a day. Not as many as I suspected. |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Bill D Date: 12 Jul 01 - 03:34 PM hey, Rick, I have 'heard' of word counting programs, but getting all the posts together to DO the counting might be tricky...I suspect Max could write some little routine that would go on a search and total up the words by counting blanks, but it would mess up on ME, when I use my.....ummmmm....interminable dots as punctuation! |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Rick Fielding Date: 13 Jul 01 - 01:07 AM Yeah Bill, my ( )s and " marks would really screw up my tally, on the other hand we'd sure be easy to trace! "Rick" (bracket boy) |
Subject: RE: BS: 500,000 posts ...and counting From: Gervase Date: 13 Jul 01 - 09:11 AM Bloody hell - I feel almost mute with a mere 763 posts since September 1999 - just over one a day. And most of them complete bollox. Ho hum - must write more rubbish... |
