It would be good to have a Permathread on the topics of spam, trolling and flaming so as to help people who are new to the Net wise up. For example, I just learned about trolling from the current thread on "posting someone's IP." But I still don't know what an IP is.
2. BUSY DAY BARBECUE
Wash the slime off a can of Spam. Cut it into 3/4 inch cubes. Brown a little onion in hot oil, then add the Spam cubes and brown them. Add bottled barbecue sauce. Serve over rice. We like to serve this with a 1995 LaFitte-de Gaulle Merlot Noir. Be sure to open it early and let it breathe.

I am in the business of dealing with motives. Those that scream for a moderator usually do so because something doesn't fit with THEIR view of what it should be. They can't deal with real intellectual freedom because it challenges the neat little box that their world exists in. I have long maintained that their is only one thing that is important here in our little village. And that is that we respect the place. But that we do it without changing its essential flavor. Mudcat has never been a music site and with any luck it never will be. One of its components is the music site and that is the Digital Tradition. In my view, Mudcat is a community of folks who are joined by their love of music. It is around that love of music we came together. Now that we are here, we discuss many topics, have squabbles, have lovefests, create/lose friendships, get together for music, fight over issues of the day..........in other words we exist in our community. It must work, because we get new members every day. The beauty of this place is that we get the input on this stuff from many countries, many cultures, and from every personality type. It may be a novel concept, but we expect Mudcatters to act like adults, without us having to control them. If somebody posts a Spam or flame message and 123 Mudcatters reply to it before I get a chance to delete it, all of those 123 replies make no sense without the message they're responding to. Therefore, I usually leave it up, and I probably tend to disagree with Pene's decision to delete this one at the beginning of this thread. We delete messages very sparingly because we like the idea of free, uncensored discussion. One major reason we delete messages is to avoid 100-message flame wars. If the hundred messages have already been posted, what's the use of deleting the first one. The primary reason for our "aversion to moderation" is that we like to have freedom of expression here. A secondary reason is that we don't want to be babysitters. If we let it be known that we're in the censorship business, my mailbox will be flooded with requests for deleting this offensive message or another, or protests against our deletion of something. So, the policy is that we delete messages only when we absolutely have to. We ask all Mudcatters to help us combat Spam and flaming by refusing to respond to Spam and flames. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |

Pene and I are the only volunteers who are allowed to delete messages for other than technical reasons. Max and his employees also will occasionally delete an offensive message. However, we usually feel obligated to refrain from deleting the responses posted by Mudcatters who respond to Spam and flaming. Once a Mudcatter has responded to Spam or flaming, it becomes difficult to justify deleting the original message. You will notice that there have been several useless threads this week, started by unnamed guests. These threads have generated all sorts of useless responses from our "regulars." I'm sorely disappointed that many of those who have responded are people that I call friends. As long as people respond to flames, the flames will continue. I ask you all to follow the established regimen and not respond to Spam or flames. |
