Subject: R Thompson - This cruel country From: The Cat's Whiskers Date: 11 Jul 01 - 07:57 AM Does anyone have the lyrics to this song as I can't seem to find them anywhere else on the web! I know Kate Rusby has done a version but I'd like the original lyrics if possible. TCW |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Gervase Date: 11 Jul 01 - 08:06 AM You can find a version of the lyrics on the Elvis Costello lyrics site. |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 Jul 01 - 08:09 AM Another job for the "Digitrad and Forum Search", which you will find on the main Forum page. A search for this cruel country will find you a past discussion where the words were posted under their right name: The text here is more true to Thompson's original than is that at the Costello site. Often, if you aren't sure about the name of a song, a search for a recognisable phrase from it will find what you are looking for. |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: The Cat's Whiskers Date: 11 Jul 01 - 10:16 AM Erm... Thanks guys, I appreciate your help. I guess I should have looked in the Digitrad and Forum search first... But me being new and all... (small humble voice)Sorry... |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Jul 01 - 10:36 AM That's OK. All Malcolm was doing was pointing out the usefulness of the search facilities here. There's a good FAQ newcomers guide at the top of the threads which you may find interesting. Another fan of Mister Sir God Thompson's songs, eh? I promise myself I'll not learn any more then I think 'just one more, that can't hurt me, can it?' There are a number of Richard Thompson sites, some with chords and stuff for the chordally-challenged like me. Les |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Mrs.Duck Date: 11 Jul 01 - 02:12 PM This is too weird. I sat down to type in a search for this in the DT and find a thread up and running. I have been singing along to it for the past 3 weeks on the way to work and know it all when Linda Thompson is singing but forget it as soon as I'm on my own!!! BTW I hear it as "They'd run and hide"Les. Didn't know Kate Rusby had done it though. |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Mrs.Duck Date: 11 Jul 01 - 02:22 PM Got them from the Kate Rusby site and they are definitely what I have been singing. Thanks Mudcat |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Dita Date: 11 Jul 01 - 05:45 PM Guest Ed, I really can't see what you find objectionable on Malcolm's post. All he did was offer information to CW as to where to find the information he requested. I really don't know what more he could have done to direct cw other than saying please and thank you. If that post constitutes flaming then god help us all. love, john |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: GUEST,Ed Date: 11 Jul 01 - 06:16 PM John, (Dita) You have got completely the wrong end of the stick! I think I made it fairly obvious, with a :-) (smile) and with a link to the message that had accused Malcolm of flaming, by his posting of such replies... Malcolm understood what I meant, most other readers probably did too, If you can't... well life's too short to explain Ed |

Subject: RE: R Thompson - This cruel country From: Noreen Date: 11 Jul 01 - 06:28 PM John, both Ed's post and Malcolm's reply included a smiley face... Ed's comment referred to an earlier incident elsewhere, which, as Malcolm said, is not worth a comment, but your final sentence is relevant to that! I'll stop being the mudcat nanny now. Noreen |
