Another job for the "Digitrad and Forum Search", which you will find on the main Forum page.  A search for this cruel country will find you a past discussion where the words were posted under their right name:

Withered and Died

The text here is more true to Thompson's original than is that at the Costello site.  Often, if you aren't sure about the name of a song, a search for a recognisable phrase from it will find what you are looking for.

The only difference that I can see is in 'They'd run and hide' should probably be 'played run and hide'.

That's OK. All Malcolm was doing was pointing out the usefulness of the search facilities here. There's a good FAQ newcomers guide at the top of the threads which you may find interesting.

Another fan of Mister Sir God Thompson's songs, eh? I promise myself I'll not learn any more then I think 'just one more, that can't hurt me, can it?'

There are a number of Richard Thompson sites, some with chords and stuff for the chordally-challenged like me.

This is too weird. I sat down to type in a search for this in the DT and find a thread up and running. I have been singing along to it for the past 3 weeks on the way to work and know it all when Linda Thompson is singing but forget it as soon as I'm on my own!!! BTW I hear it as "They'd run and hide"Les.
Didn't know Kate Rusby had done it though.

Guest Ed, I really can't see what you find objectionable on Malcolm's post. All he did was offer information to CW as to where to find the information he requested. I really don't know what more he could have done to direct cw other than saying please and thank you. If that post constitutes flaming then god help us all.
