Recording Sessions ?

I am a bit new to the folk scene so I thought I would ask you this, I have been to some really good folk sessions inHull recently, and I wondered if it would be ok to take a portable tape recorder and tape one? I should, add the tape would be for my own use, to play at home, and if any peformer wanted a copy I would be happy to make them one.Are there any rules about this? Would any of you performers object to being taped? I will be very grateful for any replies as I have wondered this for a while.thanks John

Would -I object? no... but I'm not part of the session in question... your best bet it to go to the session one night and ask -them- if they mind... and if they do, don't push it...

John in Hull Mmmm, tricky one this....
Have often been in sessions, with the odd tape m/c lurking around. Shouldn't be a problem, but, always best to check with whoever is running the bash. Recording Concert performances on the other hand brings up all sorts of copyright issues. Anyone wishing to do this should seek out permission from the artist concerned prior to the gig.....Most people I know (inc me) are happy enough to waive our statutory rights, but, I have known occasions when Artists have refused to perform, just to protect their rights....!!
On the other hand, if many people hadn't boot-legged Nic Jones' performances all those years ago, I wouldn't have any material to work with now!!!
Generally, courtesy, sympathy, and communication before a gig is probably the best way, and if an artist says NO, they probably mean it.

To get a decent recording, you need to be as near as possible to the performer(s), and they are bound to see it, so ask first. I have never been refused, although on one occasion, a performer asked me not to tape one particular song, as he had only just learned it, and didn't want people copying it TOO soon. BTW Ralphie, did you ever identify the mystery celebrity on that tape?

Yup . . done this several times here and overseas . . If it's hard to see who's running the show (IME the best sessions are like that) you wait for a pause and throw out "Does anyone have a problem if I record some of this . . "

John, as others have noted, always ask...

Here's a nice little tale... I'm new to Norwich and started going to a session there. I went armed with tape and asked, no problem, etc. My surprise came the week later when Ken, the piper presented me with a CD that they had made from a session that they had recorded earlier in the year which contained most of the favourites of the Norwich session.

I was part of an evenings public enertainment which was recorded on CD by one of the other people involved. The first we knew about it was when he presented each group involved with a tape, containing a couple of songs from each of the artists involved. There were 8-10 different acts that night, only one had a problem with it. He even wrote to the local paper screaming about copywrite infringement and all sorts of other crap. IMHO the main reason he complained was that there had been a recording made of his lousy playing that night. JohnB

Ralphie - well it was long before he started singing professionally, and may not have developed his voice and style, so I will let you off. The others were Lynne Gent & Paul (surname unknown), my wife, who got 4 songs, and myself, (not necessarily in that order.) You can see why I let her do the singing!

Permission first, then develope the habit of: quietly say the name of the tune, and if applicable, the name of the pertinant performer. that 3+ hour long recording will mean little to you at home otherwise.

I used to tape a lot of stuff at festivals and sessions - had sticky
labels printed saying 'Terry Silver stole a song off me' for 'em to stick on a case or whatever !! Got refused a few times , usually songs that hadnt been recorded and released professionally !!
