I have heard that some of the Kazoo band are appearing at a festival in the not to distant future and the organisers wish to keep it a secret so as to have maximum impact at the final concert There has been talk of cd also. Keith

Thanks to all the young musicians who worked so hard at the children's festival orchestra. The busk at the bandstand was our best yet. It was a shame about the weather on Friday but we still managed to kazoo our way down to the Spa!!! See you all next year.

It wasn't the first sleep I'd had all week, maybe it was the longeest though!! I averaged 2 to 3 hrs a night and had to be up to help at the souvenir shop in the folk week office every morning, whilst some lazy people laid in till midday at the earliest...some of the members of acts appearing at windy b in fact.....i won't mention any names though!!

DORRIE - Is the PLAIN FLOUR still there?? That was so cool. There was a hell of a lot of sellotape used that night.

I had to take tear stricken Maisey and Siân back to camp in a taxi......alright it was my idea cos I was incapable of walking....nevermind.

It was great to go to the bbq and meet loads of new catters I aint seen before, although half of them live in HULL!! It must be thier yearly probabtion period Whitby Week and they all congregate at the Ducks!!

The regatta next year is the week before Folk Week. The regatta dates are mainly dictated by the tides, but also by concerns about not clashing with other events elsewhere that have a stronger pull on punters (like the Sunderland Air Show). It's bad for business (especially the B&Bs) when the regatta coincides with Folk Week - they'd rather have the custom spread over different weeks than competing for the same weekend, and being disappointed.

Thats about right, Dorrie....though not sure if its quite as long as that.

Steve, it used to be, back in the 80's, that it clashed every 3 years or so, so there ended up an agreement being made that the Regatta would change their dates (They have to change their dates anyway, cos of the Tides, of course) to not clash with us, except where unavoidable because of tides, like this year. Its NOT due to coincide again for a few years yet...

An interesting comment that got passed to me was that for all the trouble that the town had, & the trouble we had, the presence of the Festival helped CALM things in the town faster than it normally subsides after the Regatta.

Stevie1, dates next year are 17 to 23 Aug, it ought not to clash with the regatta 'cos thet only seems to happen every few years when the tides dictate.

Incidentally, despite the aggro between the two factions I did meet regular regatta-goers who said they had stayed on for the festival out of curiosity (never having seen such an event poor lambs) and they had had a whale of a time, might even come again...converts?

Roz, put a description of the box on the site, preferably on a separate thread, it takes ages to down load this on my old steam driven computer. If you know the model number and tell us what make it is together with as detailed a description as poss, any dents or scratches you never know one of us might spot it. Hiya all...well, just about recovered from a HELLISH week at Whitby....

As Les B said, considerable damage was done to tents on my site, & the Portaloo Company have been 'Malcolm-ed'.... NOT a pleasant experience, I assure you!

Seriously, there were a LOT of problems with the Site this year.....& not all were apparent to the Paying Populace.

My calf muscles were killing me too, Les.....Hull is also VERY flat... & if you were on MY Campsite, why didnt you make yourself known! I was the LESS tall, straggly-haired unshaven Steward....

Steve, the Guisborough site did get VERY boggy at the gate, apparently...cars stuck.....though there were only just over a dozen people or units used the Site. An enterprising farmer on the other side of the road, just a bit further along opened his field....cheaper....Though he only had ONE Portaloo....dunno how many Campers he got.

hi, just got around to booting up and coming on site. whitby was just wonderful but then again i'm biased. thanks for the bbque provided by the ducks again. the tap and the plough were about as far as i got, oh and a session at the ship on thursday evening. clare and i are bound to be there again next year.

Got there on Thursday before it started to steward campsite 2. Was taken ill and after a visit to the hospital then the doctors, went back home to Scotland on the Saturday. Missed the lot and am gutted. Glad everyone had a great time.

Sorry I missed the beer Paul. Maybe next year.

Did anyone stay on campsite 2, did it hold up? It seemed that after a bit of rain it would have been a bit sticky.

Starting to plan next year.

Brilliant week as ever. The Scratch were as always the best dance side and band!! I have my heather from THE garland to ensure a return next year. Also took part in the parade which due to circumstances was reduced to Geoff leading on pipe and drum followed by me and the twins then the youth orchestra and finally the littlies from playtime all dressed up as pirates = it may not have been the longest procession in history but it was GOOD!!

As the dust settles on my first full week at Whitby and the aches in my muscles ease, (I'm not used to hills where I live in Southport). It's time to reflect. The highs.. Grace Notes, Roy Bailey & John Kirkpatrick doing an hour together, Steve Tilston, Coope Boyes & Simpson (even with Lester Simpson having the dreaded lurgi), Musical Chairlegs with Strawhead, nice performances by Grace Toland, Kiron Means and many others, Wed lunchtime in the Elsinor with Lunctime Legends & Pete Morton. The catering on the campsite(thanks again Ladies). The Lows..The toilets on the campsite, the morons who vandalised awnings & a tent on Fri night.

Thanks to all the stewards for helping things to run smoothly. I had a great time.

I am a steward too....although I quite like the idea of being a warden!! I help Paul on the official campsite at Stakesby school the dinner ladies there do a mean cooked brekky! come and introduce yourself...just look in at the caravan, the kettle is usually on. Stewarding is a good way to do the festival..you can enjoy the fringe without feeling that your pass is wasted and feel 'part of' the official Festival as well....the easiest place to find catters is probably the Tap and Spile...ooooh only 5 days!! exciting eh?

Paul From Hull is also a Warden (we were known as Stewards). Paul works on the Main Festival Campsite and I work on No.2 Campsite. Make yourself known when you arrive. The job is great for those who want to work. You get to see loads. It gets a bit hectic at times but we all muck in.

All mudcatters and partners are welcome to the barbeque. We managed last year with two standard size ones but if it looks like more are coming this year it could be handy to have another one. Everyone brings something to go on the barbeque (the butchers on Baxtergate does some nice sausages and burgers - different sorts) and something to drink. We provide the bread and some salady stuffs crisps etc. and everyone sort of mucked in with things. Last year we had a few non catters came who joined and are now regulars so if anyone has hovered on the fringes and wants to know what mudcat is all about they are also welcome. As a regular at the Jug I am used to fitting large numbers into small spaces!!!!

Can I have some advice please too.

Mrs Flaj is letting me go to Whitby by myself. My first holiday ever without my minder (herself).

Don't know if I'm doing the right thing but have volunteered to be a warden and have been signed on, which gets me a free campsite and free ticket for the week.

Other than Stevie1 are any other catters wardens?

The advice I'm seeking is how to find sessions with the catters I know from the Jug. We went on Sunday last year and trailed round all the pubs but I didn't see anyone I knew. Do any of you carry a mobile phone that I could ring to find out where you are?

Next question is to Jeff and Mrs Duck about the barbecue - is it one of those where everybody has to bring their own barby or do you supply them and folks bring their own food or what? (Am I being a bit presumptious ie is it open to all or only invitees?)

Nick, Whitby week starts a week on saturday August 19th. Mrs Duck is right you will have a brill time with or without a ticket....if there are any official concerts etc you want to see you can usually pay on the door... or buy day tickets, there's so much unofficial stuff this is certainly the cheapest option...you will find yourself in places you don't need a ticket for wondering why you bought one!!there might be more of a problem this year in finding accomodation (never easy)or finding a place to camp as it is also regatta over the first weekend....as was mentioned earlier, whatever you do BE THERE...this is not just a festival...it's WHITBY!!

Not usually a problem getting tickets Nick although we have for a number of years not bothered and just enjoyed the free activities which take place in various pubs around the town.

Anyone who has ordered a Mudcat badge will be able to collect it from myself or Geoff the Duck (usually to be found in or around the Tap and Spile) as Tig and the Badger won't be up until later in the week. If you are wanting one and haven't yet ordered contact them as soon as possible otherwise you'll have to wait until they get there with the badge making machine.

Whitby is great. The area is beauitful and during the folk week the town is very lively. It is normally a peaceful place which I visit often just sort my head out.

The camper van and you will be welcome on the Festival No2 Campsite which is located on the Guisborough Road going out of Whitby. I am the steward on that site. It opens at 1.00pm Friday.

Bobbys Girl: I would assume & HOPE, that Steve (or possibly I) would have heard from Malcolm had the Farmer encountered a problem since its been arranged.

Will keep people posted on here if I hear anything more, as will Steve I'm sure. I would GUESS that the biggest effect we are likely to feel is SOME of the roads across the Moors maybe being closed to Traffic, which maybe affects us Hull folk more than others...

Just a thought about the campsite in the farmers field - the foot and mouth regulations have been tightened up in the area in a major way in the last 10 days or so following another case, so even if the field is open you will need to be very careful. We travelled down from Durham to York after Folkworks across the moors, and there were loads of notices telling you not to go onto the moors from the roads, and disinfectant mats to drive over. Any of us coming into the area from outside are going to have to be very aware, and abide by the rules.

The "staff thing" was a shepherd's crook made by one of the finest makers, and singers, from the borders - Willy Scott. Willy was a regular at the festival until his death. The festival acquired one of his sticks to present to the person / team collecting the most in the week.

I'll be there again this year working on one of the campsites.

This year the site at Eskdale school will not be available and I am not sure if any camping is going to be available to anyone other than season ticket holders (Stakesby School) or performers (Community College).

This year I am working at the Collage I think, so any Catters on the site please make yourself known.

Willa - I don't think I did Sara's workshop last year, although I've done it in the past. After 20 years they tend to blur into one sort of proto-festival with memorable bits but no clear idea in which year they happened. I know I did Dave Townsend's West Gallery workshop though.

I'll be there as usual. See you with Scratch, if not before. It should be absolute mayhem for the first few days, so get in as early as you can to get a parking space! Ian is threatening to disappear during the latter half of the week, so you will recognise me by my fraught expression as I try and keep two 15 year old girls under reasonable control, one of whom is experiencing her first festival.

If you are going to Whitby, as many do, as part folk music/ part holiday , be aware that there is foot and mouth desease on the moors (at present at Lealholm and Tranmire) and that some activities eg. Danby Show may be cancelled and that some minor roads may be closed

John in Hull, as has already been stated this year the Regatta weekend and the first weekend of the festival overlap. Both events fill the town on their own so accomodation unless pre-booked will almost be impossible to find (unless you've more jam than Hartleys). However several pubs (in addition to the Tap & Spile) welcome folkies with open arms. The East (old) side of the river tends to be quieter, so the Bord (John & Barbara) Black Horse (Steve & Lyn) and Endeavour John & Rosie)and the Middle Earth will be good places to look for music and where the hosts are ameniable. The Plough on Baxtergate probably has the most varied sessions in as much as the front room two back rooms the beer garden and the concert room all host sessions which go on all day. If you're not buying a ticket, Stoupes Cross Farm up near the Abbey is the nearest campsite. Good Luck. I'll be there all week with family. Yippeeeeeeeeee

John, if you can afford it, and can be in Whitby all week, a pass is the best bet; you can go in and out of gigs as you choose, so if, for instance you want to see just one performer at one venue, then move on to another, you'll be able to do that (subject to there being seats available). On the other hand, if you're wanting to meet up with mudcatters, can't be in Whitby all week, or want to enjoy lots of free live music, spend your time in the pubs listening to sessions and singarounds.
You'll find a list of events posted up in the Tap and Spile, and can buy a programme there.
Whichever is the case, get yourself along to Whitby; you'll not regret it1

The best way to recognise other catters at Whitby or any other festivals is to wear your Mudcat Tee shirt or watch out for others wearing theirs. If you don't have your shirt yet I still have a few left in most sizes. You can order mudcat badges with your name on from Badger here and he will have them ready for you in Whitby.
Remember all profit from the shirts goes to Mudcat so you are helping to keep mudcat running as well as owning a beautiful eye catching shirt.

On Scratch Morris days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons) we'll be helping provide ?music? for the finest dance side in Whitby called Whitby Scratch Morris faeturing your own, your very own (and you can keep him!) john in hull - At Whitby if you just turn up, there will be plenty happening around the pubs. The Folk Festival will be holding concerts etc. for much of the day. It has been possible in previous years to buy a Day Ticket, allowing you into most events (space allowing), or pay on the door for a single event. I personally find the prices being charged for single events higher than I can afford, and excessive for the length of the actual concerts, but others are welcome to their own opinions.
As has been mentioned, this year the Regatta overlaps with the opening weekend of Whitby. This means that the town will be full of people turning up to see the regatta events and funfair rides. As a result the pubs will be excessively overcrowded, and not enough room for the folkies to do their thing. Accommodation will also be a problem for the same reasons. If this is your first visit, it would probably be easier to turn up after the Weekend. As you are from Hull. I believe that the Hull Shanty Festival is on that Weekend, I know that Les and some others are this year travelling up to Whitby after the Shanty Festival.

See you all at Whitby. Don't know how you recognise Mudcatters. Might I suggest you all dye your hair purple, or paint your head if you don't have hair. Did see someone at Saltburn last year extoling Mudcat and it's taken me a year to join. Saltburn's another great festival, well worth a look. Don't have to walk far either.

I'll be there with all the family as usual for the week. I usually do singing/harmony workshops and some dance if I can find the energy. Nearly always finish up at the spa for the late night ceilidh - its the only way we can catch up with the daughters!

Whitby is my favourite UK festival. Others (Sidmouth, for example) are bigger, and have more star performers on the bill, but Whitby is tops for atmosphere and ambience. Barring accidents, illness, or family disasters, I'll be there for the week this year, dancing with Hexham Morris Men (blue waistcoats - white trousers - mainly Cotswold), and pub-crawling when off duty. Hope to see some Mudcatters at our workshops and dance-outs, or in the Tap and Spile … or the Plough … or the Jolly Sailor … or wherever.

Geoff- I just had a flashback to reading your arrangements for your Whitby barbecue last year. I'd not been reading threads long, and thought how odd that these people should be arranging to meet up with strangers, making contact by notice boards at the festival.

Amazing how different it seems now, since I first met other catters at Llanstock. Nothing would be more natural now. This place has done so much for me...

John, I imagine Whitby will be extremely busy this year, with the regatta being on the same week, so don't think this is how all festivals are. Meet up with as many catters as you can, and have a wonderful time!

There will be quite a few of us. The Ducks will often be found about the Tap & Spile, as will some of the Hull 'Catters. Others have their own favourite pub or session. Tig and Badger usually arrive around the Tuesday, with their badge machine. If you haven't already bought your official Mudcat name badge, they will be taking advance orders, to collect when they arrive.
Last lear Mrs.Duck and myself had a Mudcat Barbecue at our cottage. We are intending to host something similae this year as well - information will be posted closer to the week.
