Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: JeZeBeL Date: 31 Aug 01 - 02:03 PM MRS.DUCK - cheers for putting that picci of me on - NOT!! It wasn't the first sleep I'd had all week, maybe it was the longeest though!! I averaged 2 to 3 hrs a night and had to be up to help at the souvenir shop in the folk week office every morning, whilst some lazy people laid in till midday at the earliest...some of the members of acts appearing at windy b in fact.....i won't mention any names though!! DORRIE - Is the PLAIN FLOUR still there?? That was so cool. There was a hell of a lot of sellotape used that night. I had to take tear stricken Maisey and Siân back to camp in a taxi......alright it was my idea cos I was incapable of walking....nevermind. It was great to go to the bbq and meet loads of new catters I aint seen before, although half of them live in HULL!! It must be thier yearly probabtion period Whitby Week and they all congregate at the Ducks!! TTFN JeZ.......... |

Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Aug 01 - 07:24 PM The regatta next year is the week before Folk Week. The regatta dates are mainly dictated by the tides, but also by concerns about not clashing with other events elsewhere that have a stronger pull on punters (like the Sunderland Air Show). It's bad for business (especially the B&Bs) when the regatta coincides with Folk Week - they'd rather have the custom spread over different weeks than competing for the same weekend, and being disappointed. |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: GUEST Date: 30 Aug 01 - 05:49 PM ....though conversely, many people,& I felt this way myself, said there wasnt the 'atmosphere' that there is normally in Festival week......possibly due to the Regatta leaving 'a nasty taste' in people's mouths, so to speak? |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: GUEST Date: 30 Aug 01 - 05:43 PM Thats about right, Dorrie....though not sure if its quite as long as that. Steve, it used to be, back in the 80's, that it clashed every 3 years or so, so there ended up an agreement being made that the Regatta would change their dates (They have to change their dates anyway, cos of the Tides, of course) to not clash with us, except where unavoidable because of tides, like this year. Its NOT due to coincide again for a few years yet... An interesting comment that got passed to me was that for all the trouble that the town had, & the trouble we had, the presence of the Festival helped CALM things in the town faster than it normally subsides after the Regatta. |

Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: GUEST Date: 30 Aug 01 - 05:29 PM Ramadan could be interesting Jim...no-one eating or drinking during daylight hours?...with the onset of the inevitable DTs there'd be more little green men in the tap&spile than on St Pats night! what about Halloween? |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Les from Hull Date: 30 Aug 01 - 03:55 PM Aye, Jim, Burns Night. I'll get some of that burns ointment. Although Burns Night in Hull is on November the Fifth. |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Dorrie Date: 30 Aug 01 - 02:22 PM apparently it only clashes once every 13 years or something but i'm not sure how true that is dorrie xx |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: MC Fat Date: 30 Aug 01 - 11:16 AM How about the egg rolling and decorating. The sight of seeing grown (sic) men painting eggs on a Wednesday afternoon was fab. Next year is it St.Pat's. Burns Night or Ramadan ? |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: White Dove Date: 30 Aug 01 - 10:37 AM Thanx Les.....Don't know how but I have caught a cold! Hopefully I will not be spluttering too much at the Kingston tomorrow night. Raggytash...thanx for the suggested thread..re my guitar, I will do that pronto!

Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: gnomad Date: 30 Aug 01 - 09:30 AM Stevie1, dates next year are 17 to 23 Aug, it ought not to clash with the regatta 'cos thet only seems to happen every few years when the tides dictate. Incidentally, despite the aggro between the two factions I did meet regular regatta-goers who said they had stayed on for the festival out of curiosity (never having seen such an event poor lambs) and they had had a whale of a time, might even come again...converts? |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Steveie1 Date: 30 Aug 01 - 07:52 AM Anyone got the dates for next year, and does it clash with the Regatta again? Just planning ahead! Cheers |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Les from Hull Date: 29 Aug 01 - 06:08 PM White Dove - Maggie and I were very sorry to hear about your guitar. Looking forward to seeing you again real soon, wherever that might be. Les |

Thank you to you and all the unsung heros getting ear ache from us punters. The mats going in and out of the field were a good idea. See some of you at Fylde (I,ve had a look at the barbi photos to try and identify you all). Cheers Les |

Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 29 Aug 01 - 03:57 PM Thanks for the Barbie Mr & Mrs Duck, didn't stay very long pressure of enjoying as much as poss in as little time. Roz, put a description of the box on the site, preferably on a separate thread, it takes ages to down load this on my old steam driven computer. If you know the model number and tell us what make it is together with as detailed a description as poss, any dents or scratches you never know one of us might spot it. I'll keep a look out in Whitby as we're there quite often. Take Care all |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Pene Azul Date: 28 Aug 01 - 08:01 PM The barbecue photos are now up in the Photos - Events section of the Member Photos & Info. Thanks very much to Mrs. Duck for submitting these great photos. Jeff |

Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Paul from Hull Date: 28 Aug 01 - 07:16 PM Hiya all...well, just about recovered from a HELLISH week at Whitby.... As Les B said, considerable damage was done to tents on my site, & the Portaloo Company have been 'Malcolm-ed'.... NOT a pleasant experience, I assure you! Seriously, there were a LOT of problems with the Site this year.....& not all were apparent to the Paying Populace. My calf muscles were killing me too, Les.....Hull is also VERY flat... & if you were on MY Campsite, why didnt you make yourself known! I was the LESS tall, straggly-haired unshaven Steward.... Steve, the Guisborough site did get VERY boggy at the gate, apparently...cars stuck.....though there were only just over a dozen people or units used the Site. An enterprising farmer on the other side of the road, just a bit further along opened his field....cheaper....Though he only had ONE Portaloo....dunno how many Campers he got. |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Dorrie Date: 28 Aug 01 - 06:18 PM oh good i cant want 2 look at them all |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 28 Aug 01 - 05:28 PM All 'catters were invited Dorrie but sadly it will not take place next year as we are not in the same cotage-unless we have new hosts. I have just sent photos to Pene Azul. We took about 80 but I narrowed it down to about 20. So the guitar never turned up Roz-what a shame after such a good week. |

Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Steveie1 Date: 27 Aug 01 - 08:20 AM Got there on Thursday before it started to steward campsite 2. Was taken ill and after a visit to the hospital then the doctors, went back home to Scotland on the Saturday. Missed the lot and am gutted. Glad everyone had a great time. Sorry I missed the beer Paul. Maybe next year. Did anyone stay on campsite 2, did it hold up? It seemed that after a bit of rain it would have been a bit sticky. Starting to plan next year. |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 27 Aug 01 - 06:16 AM Brilliant week as ever. The Scratch were as always the best dance side and band!! I have my heather from THE garland to ensure a return next year. Also took part in the parade which due to circumstances was reduced to Geoff leading on pipe and drum followed by me and the twins then the youth orchestra and finally the littlies from playtime all dressed up as pirates = it may not have been the longest procession in history but it was GOOD!! See you all again soon PS I have photos of Jezebel fast asleep at the barbeque - probably the first time that week!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby (UK) 2001 From: Les b (U.K.) Date: 26 Aug 01 - 05:36 PM As the dust settles on my first full week at Whitby and the aches in my muscles ease, (I'm not used to hills where I live in Southport). It's time to reflect. The highs.. Grace Notes, Roy Bailey & John Kirkpatrick doing an hour together, Steve Tilston, Coope Boyes & Simpson (even with Lester Simpson having the dreaded lurgi), Musical Chairlegs with Strawhead, nice performances by Grace Toland, Kiron Means and many others, Wed lunchtime in the Elsinor with Lunctime Legends & Pete Morton. The catering on the campsite(thanks again Ladies). The Lows..The toilets on the campsite, the morons who vandalised awnings & a tent on Fri night. Thanks to all the stewards for helping things to run smoothly. I had a great time. Fylde next no hills, except the Mount. Cheers Les
