Subject: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: GUEST,Ed Date: 12 Jul 01 - 05:49 AM A friend of mine wants to put an advert on the 'net for some fairly obscure vintage motorbike magazines that he is looking for ("The Motor Cycle Magazine" from 1926-1933). Does anyone know a good place to place such an advert or search for them for sale? I know that there are some motorcycle fans here, so maybe someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Many thanks Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Sorcha Date: 12 Jul 01 - 03:17 PM Are the magazines brand specific? Surely there are L-lists or newsgroups devoted to "breed discussion". Post the names here and maybe somebody here can help find them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Jul 01 - 05:43 PM Try Motorcycle News (MCN - they have a website I can't quote you... sorry) or if wanting to find them, try Bike Trader (a version of Auto Trader, a magazine that lists bikes for sale/wanted and other biker paraphanalia) who do have a website at www.biketrader.co.uk - they do mostly bike sales but there is a classified section where you could place an ad. Of course, if you are the other side of the pond, this might not be of any use to you. LTS

Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: GUEST Date: 12 Jul 01 - 07:23 PM Sorcha, Excuse my ignorance, but what are 'L lists?' Do you mean mailing lists? Liz, Thanks for those links, I'll investigate them. I live on the right (purely geographically, you understand) side of the pond... Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Sorcha Date: 12 Jul 01 - 08:42 PM I was using it as a generic term for discussion boards such as L-soft provides. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Sorcha Date: 12 Jul 01 - 09:05 PM Try this e-bay page. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Sorcha Date: 12 Jul 01 - 09:06 PM And here !! is what Google found for motorcycle discussion groups. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Amos Date: 12 Jul 01 - 10:46 PM And as long as we are on the topic -- has anyone ever written any songs which really capture the feel of a 650 Norton opening up to full throttle, or a shaft-drive-Beemer cruising a one-lane blacktop at sunrise in the up-country farmland? I've nebver heard it, if so.... A |

Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: rangeroger Date: 12 Jul 01 - 11:08 PM Amos,I don't know about a song, but I did twist the throttle of a 750 Commando in downtown Chula Vista once. Missed the shift from 1st to 2nd as I was used to Jap bikes and tried to shift with my left foot.By the time I hit 2nd with my right, the throttle was still wide open, the bike went sideways, and I went through an intersection at about 70.Hit third, turned at the next corner and returned it to the owner who was standing in front of his shop laughing. Great bike. rr |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: GUEST,Upstreeter Date: 13 Jul 01 - 04:21 AM When it comes to a song about a motorcycle Richard Thompson wins hands down. 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is I believe the most requested song at his gigs. Anyone old enogh to remember the excrutiating 'Terry', by Twinkle, with the immortal lyric "he rode into the night, accelerated his motorbike, I cried to him in fright - "don't do it, don't do it...etc...etc" will marvel at its creativity. Quite what Terry wasn't supposed to do I never found out, probably change up into second gear or something - whatever, it was too late and the pathetic boyfriend was smeared out when his bike hit a snail crossing the road or some such nonsense. Someone is right to mention this genre of songs, although not too 'green' today they nevertheless have their place in popular culture. Look at all that great internal coombustion stuff from the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and co. Sorry, once a motorcyclist always a motorcyclist I think. It's amazing how many you come across on the folk scene...scratch the surface and there's pure Castrol 'R' undernaeth. Two wheels good four wheels bad as Orge Georwell once said. Back to thread...if you want to place an ad in the UK for these magazines try 'Old Bike Mart', 'The Classic Motorcycle' or 'Classic Bike' in that order. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: KingBrilliant Date: 13 Jul 01 - 05:19 AM I heard Geoff Higginbottom (I think that's his name - if not then its similar) sing 1952 Black Vincent at Chippenham Festival this year. Mark & I were sat with tears pouring down our faces - most embarrassing. I don't know if the song is always that powerful, but Geoff sang it superlatively - it helps that he looks the part too. Kris PS - I don't think any other song has had that affect since I was a kid, when I found out that Puff the Magic Dragon gets abandonned. Sniff |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Kjell Date: 13 Jul 01 - 05:38 AM I believe that there are lots of Rally's dedicated to old bikes(full of old bikers!)You would probably find lots of biker gear as well.
Kjell PS Used to ride a Triumph Bonniville 750cc until I hit a badly fitted drain cover at a crossroad in Jedburgh OUCH! |
Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Jul 01 - 02:48 PM What about Arlo and the Motorcycle song.... does it for me!! Some 1970's pop group did 'motorbiking' which also does it. 'Going down the Queen's highway, movin' like a streak of lightning....' LTS

Subject: RE: BS: Rare Motorcycle Magazines From: Steve Latimer Date: 13 Jul 01 - 03:02 PM I've never heard the Richard Thompson song (I'm ashamed), but I sure am jealous of you guys who had Norton's and Triumph's. My dream bike to this day is a Norton John Player Special followed by an 850 Commando. Lucas Electrics (switches that say Off and Off) leaking oil and all.
