Subject: The Forum is Going to Close From: Max Date: 06 Jan 98 - 04:29 PM Hi guys, Here's the scoop. I figured out how to double the speed of the forum. Our tests show about 125% improvement. You can go to http://www.mudcat.org/sqlthreads/threads.cfm and see for yourself. This is a temporary version, as you will see it is outdated. You may post to this demo if you want to try it out, but it will not be posted to the real forum and will be deleted in the next couple of days. We lost about 500 messages (out of 19,000) because of strange characters used. Rather than forget and discard these, I am going to shut down the forum for a few hours late tonight to get rid of those characters and redo the conversion. Then if the tests go well, we will go live with it maybe as early as tomorrow. Please try the demo and let me know in this thread or create one on the demo and tell me what you think or how fast or slow it is. more later... |

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Dale Rose Date: 06 Jan 98 - 04:57 PM Well, one thing about it, you got my attention with THAT statement, Max. Roughly 16 seconds total on both versions for the Christmas greetings thread, the longest on today's list. I will go find a really long one to time. |

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Dale Rose Date: 06 Jan 98 - 05:18 PM No use trying to check it that way, it seems, since your demo is incomplete. I did load 90 days worth on this version in 2:10 at speeds in the 2.9-4.5 range, and about the same over there. |

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Max Date: 06 Jan 98 - 07:46 PM Download time should not be effected. What we have cut in half is the latency, or the time that it take to even begin downloading. I am convinced that bandwidth is not my problem. The internet is overbooked in general. There are some things I can do, which I will be trying over the next couple of weeks but that is not the issue at hand. It used to take just over 2 seconds to get 3 days worth of messages out of the database. On the demo it takes .91 seconds to do a whole year. Now how long it takes to download is another issue all together. We are experimenting with push technology too. If you don;t know what that is, that's ok cause its incomplete technology so far. This would let your computer do some of the work in the middle of the night or when you doing other things or browsing other sites. Don;t know when it'll be ready, but we're working on it.

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Gene E Date: 06 Jan 98 - 10:51 PM It's faster Max! I can't really tell how much but it's faster by a bunch. Go for it. |

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Whippoorwill Date: 07 Jan 98 - 09:46 AM I couldn't tell much difference at up to 7 days, but loading 365 days, access time to the old board took 34 seconds compared to 7 seconds for the new one. Actual download time once the new page started loading was about the same. |

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Gordon Payne gpayne@thezone.net Date: 04 Feb 98 - 01:54 AM A friend asked me to look for a song he thinks might have the title "Love Don't Grow On Trees". I don't know how old the song is. I was wondering if anbody had any idea about this song. Thanks Gord |

Subject: RE: The Forum is Going to Close From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Feb 98 - 03:22 AM Well, Gord got my attention by reviving this thread. I posted his question in a new thread. But it does bring up a chance to ask - Max, did you make the switch to the new system? It sure was a seamless switch, if you did it. The forum has been quite speedy and reliable lately, I'd say. I'd say you do remarkable work, Max. -Joe Offer- |
