We have a family from France who moved her and opened up a bakery. They had festive outdoor party this morning, with banners for the day. It was fun to see another culture represented in Wyoming.

Though he is French from a long ways back in Canada, my SO's damily never made much of a big deal of today. It is my daughter's b-day, so we usually made note of both when she was still wanting to do so.

Happy Bastille Day!

I never forgot a wedding anniversary because my wife and I got married on Bastille Day. Had she lived, today would have been number 50! It's been a good day remembering.

Isn't it true that there were only 2 prisoners in the Bastille when it was "liberated?"

Could be, I read somewhere that they were mental patients!

One of the sites I went to said this:

On July 14th, 1789, there were only seven prisoners left in the Bastille: Jean de la Corrége; Jean Bèchade; Bernard Laroche; Jean-Antoine Pujade; DeWhitt; the Count of Solages; and Tavernier.

Nope, Kendall, I guess they weren't Republicans after all. It appears from the names they were all French.

In those days, the mentally ill were put in prisons too.

So your point is, they were mentally ill Frenchmen? Or is it that it was a big hoop-de-la over nothing!

It was mostly a symbolic gesture. If the place had been full of political prisoners, that would have been a REAL victory.

Le jour du 14 juillet,
Je reste dans mon lit douillet;
La musique qui marche au pas,
Cela ne me regarde pas.
(Georges Brassens, saying better than I ever could do what I feel about these days in whatever country)

The day of July 14, < Br > I remain in my bed douillet; < Br > the music which goes to the step, < Br > That does not look at me < Br >

So says the auto-translator. Presumably it sounds better in French?

Good automatic translations are still a matter of the future.

"the music which goes to the step" : music you can march to (umpta music)

"that doesn't look at me" : (nice translation) I do not care for

I'm not completely sure about 'douillet': it is something like 'lazy' but in a sense of lazy from lack of caring or compassion.

The verse is from 'La mauvaise reputation' (bad reputation).

DougR, that's sweet...just read it today.

Because I got married between Christmas and New Year's, not only do I usually forget the day, we are often not even in the same town on our anniversary!

I'm glad you can say "It's been a good day...", Doug. My heart goes out to you.

As for me, I get two wedding anniversaries every year (almost), because I got married on Easter Monday. Only twice in 26 years have the day and the date co-incided again. Even though I get two chances, I've still been known to forget both.

Ça ne me regarde pas = It's none of my business, not I don't care for it (at least not directly). Si ça ne te CHANTE pas (it doesn't sing you) then you don't care for it.

Vive la France! Vivent les Français! And here is some French silliness for you:

(OK, next post, I gotta go get it).

French Gnomes Helped on Way to Spiritual Freedom

Updated: Thu, Jul 12, 12:33 PM EDT

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - More than 70 garden gnomes were found on the steps of a cathedral in northeastern France after an undercover operation by the shadowy Garden Gnome Liberation Front, a regional newspaper said on Thursday. The kitsch creatures had been abducted from their green, floral homes and assembled on the steps of the cathedral in the town of Saint-Die, La Liberté de l'Est reported. A banner of the Gnome Liberation Front, which aims to "free" gnomes and "return them to the wild," was found at the scene. Local police who gathered the little statues declined to comment to journalists in an effort to contain what appeared to be a spiraling of gnome abductions in the area. This is the second covert operation by the Front in as many days. Motorists in eastern France were surprised to find more than 100 gnomes, snow whites and other gaudy garden statues on a roundabout on Wednesday. Some were arranged to spell out "Free the Gnomes."
