Just returned from seeing John Herald and would seriously reccomend that c you should see him. His only other Irish gig is in Co. Cork, copious amounts of ale prevents me from telling you which town.But where ever it is go to see him. His first album in 18 years is on release on Spit and Polish Records and is called "Roll on John", get it,his gig was one of the best in years. He was accompanpied by Irish Mandoline wizard Niall Toner( of Hank Halfhead and thr Rambling Turkey's , among many others) and when you consider that they had only met the previous night, it was an amaxing set. Tomorrow, the 15th he is in "The Sky and The Ground", Sth. Main St. Wexford, if you're around , do yourself a favour and check him out.

John is one of my absolute favourite artists. His song Passenger pigeons is a classic. Did he sing it?

'Fraid not, Rick, but he did sing "End of a Long Lonely Day", from "Ragged But Right", one of my favourites from an album that must rate as one of the greatest folk albums of all time. (Niall Toner dueted with him) Considering they only met the previous evening, they turned out a great set.

Boy, I loved John Herald, and all the other Greenbriar Boys and Dian James too. I really admire his guitar picking and singing. Wish I'd been there, but I will keep a look out for the new album. Thanks for the update.

I forgot to mention an interesting little story told by Niall Toner. Apparently he learned the fingering of his first mandoline chord by copying the position of Ralph Rinzler's fingers on the cover photo of "RAGGED BUT RIGHT".!!. Has anyone else learned their first chords by such an unusual method?

Well, not my FIRST chords, but I saw an interesting position Joe Pass was using on an album cover and learned a "6/9th" from it. More than one artist has used a 'nonsense' chord just to mess with people's heads...and it does!
