Another storm is making its way across the continent.
In the Northeast we have been fairly lucky,
as the storms tend to blow themselves out before they get to us.
But in other places there have been tornadoes and much loss of property.
Until then we have March winds and the sun is shining.

There is an active volcano 80 miles from Anchorage. DOGE has shut down the AK volcano assessment office, but it might be re-funded after a big eruption like in 1992.

There were 52 tornados and 153 hail storms in the South to Indiana yesterday.

Well, we just had a February and early March with many days above freezing and no precipitation. Not good because much of Alaska dries out in Summer and wildfires are common. But in our part of Alaska we were down to lawns and unraked leaves.

A couple days ago all at once it looked like one of our volcanoes was acting up. Anchorage has been dusted by ash three times since I've moved here. We were told that it was likely it would happen but not soon and really no way to tell how likely on any particularly near future day. Just that it was sort of likely.
Yesterday morning, 6 inches of snow.

At least my unraked leaves are covered.

The extended forecast shows two distinct trends:
stormy weather patterns,
and nights that are warmer than January or February nights.
It is promising that there are warmer nights to come.
It's been a bitterly cold winter,
and a gradual thaw by night is a welcome thing, mud notwithstanding.

Spring temperatures and rainstorms rather than freezing rain today.
It's supposed to get cold later in the week,
but first some more of the old ice may melt == hope so, anyhow.

Actually I'm now a lapsed vego, Helen. I got my gut situation straightened out and partake of turkey and chicken now and then so I'll give your recipe a go. My favorite sammich is turkey on whole wheat toast with avocado slices and a little bit of garlic mayo. I find it's best to keep things simple with avocados because they're so easily overpowered.
Looks like another beautiful day here in SWFL.

I know you're a vego, gilly, but my fave breakfast is fried bacon bits on wholegrain toast covered in a thick layer of avocado. Maybe feta or fried cubes of halloumi or tofu might do the trick for you.

Another fave is chicken breast, avocado, sun dried tomatoes and flash-fried-then-steamed asparagus - or even tinned which I usually prefer not to eat because the flavour is nothing like the fresh asparagus.

Maybe I should take this to the recipe thread instead.

The birds have been eating the avocados on the tree, too.

I know what is going to happen next avocado season. The tree will be totally bereft of a crop. My expectations will be sky high and the result will be abysmal.

I just had a rethink. I started growing the avocado from seed maybe 18-20 years ago. I was wrong about the 25 years. Feels like 25 years, though. LOL

Here in east coast Oz, I am happy to report that somehow the weather gods have worked together and we finally - after 25 years - had a good sized crop of avocados on the tree I grew from seed.

We've had some years with no avocados and some with a few, but this time there have been at least 25. Unfortunately most of them are too high to pick because the tree is taller than our two storey house, but I have picked some from the top verandah with an extendable picking tool. We just have to keep checking the ground for the ripe ones when they fall off the tree.

I know that the avocado tree is either a Shepard or a Hass variety because they are my two favourite varieties. What’s the difference? It is probably a Shepard because the skin is green. It might not be the best tree for our area but they have a good flavour, colour and texture so that's why I did the avocado seed sprouting trick. It took a few months at least for the seed to sprout and a few years in a pot to be big enough to plant in the ground.

It was 70 degrees F in Missouri today - Hawaiian weather, and a good time to mix up the herbicide and zap the creeping charley, which glows green in a dead brown garden.

Winter will return, but for now, we just enjoy it.

Well that was some storm - or at least it's still going but tailing off. Just watching the news, and a trail of destruction throughout Ireland and Scotland and N England - 1000s of trees down, roofs blown off, falling masonry as chimneys collapse, whole sides of buildings taken out, lorries and cars blown over, power cuts, floods. It was another day of lockdown, and rightly so.
On a personal note, we had one fence panel down in our back garden, and a woodpile blown about. And now we have the prospect of snow and ice coming overnight. Happy Days!

No buses running in Edinburgh during the red alert phase, which is from 10am to 5pm.
Amber alert starts at 6 am. Very calm at the moment (12 midnight)
First time ever, one of those siren alerts to all mobile phones, with a message about the impending doom. I didn’t hear mine, as was in another room at the other end of the house when it went off, but others report having been terrified by its loudness!
