Has anyone heard of this song?

Can You Lead Me To The Altar Walter? Now I don't know if that is the title or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good day, Cookie

This is probably Walter! Walter! (Lead Me To The Altar), copyright 1937, by Will E. Haines, Jimmy Harper and Noel Forrester. It was originally sung by Gracie Fields. I remember seeing Cilla Black perform it on a TV programme of old songs. Must have been at least fifteen years ago.

Hi Cookie,

WALTER! WALTER! LEAD ME TO THE ALTAR
Words and music by Will E. Haines, Jimmy Harper & Noel Forrester, ©1937.

Walter and me 'ave been courtin' for years,
But he's never asked me to wed.
When Leap Year comes round I give three hearty cheers,
And I do the asking instead.
I don't want to die an old maid,
So I sing him this serenade:

Walter! Walter! Lead me to the altar,
I'll make a better man of you.
Walter! Walter! Buy the bricks and mortar,
And we'll build a love nest for two.
I've kept my bottom draw'r together,
My bridal gown's as good as new.
Walter! Walter! Lead me to the altar,
And make all my nightmares come true.

I took him round to the furniture shop
And I showed him a nice double bed.
But when I felt sure that the question he'd pop,
He popped to the pictures instead.
I still have to play the same part,
He must know this chorus by heart:

Walter! Walter! Lead me to the altar.
I don't cost much to keep in food.
Walter! Walter! Mother thinks you oughter,
So take me while she's in the mood.
You know I'm very fond of chickens;
We'll raise a lovely little brood.
Walter! Walter! Lead me to the altar,
And I'll show you where I'm tattooed.

Walter! Walter! Lead me to the altar,
Don't say I've met my Waterloo.
Walter! Walter! Tears are tasting salter
And I've lost my handkerchief too.
Don't muck the goods about no longer,
My old-age pension's nearly due.
Walter! Walter! Lead me to the altar,
It's either the workhouse or you.

best wishes, Yvonne

Ordinarily I don't like posting redundant lyrics, but 'ere I've gone an' transcribed this, reproducing Gracie's dialect an' all. She does sing a shorter version and changes a few words. I assume the above lyrics came from the sheet music.

You can play or download this recording at The Internet Archive. It's song #1 on that page. Here's my transcription:

WALTER, WALTER, LEAD ME TO THE ALTAR
Words and music by Will E. Haines, Jimmy Harper & Noel Forrester, ©1937.
As sung by Gracie Fields, 1938.

Walter an' me we've been courtin' for years,
But 'e's never asked me to wed.
When leap year comes round I give three 'earty cheers,
Because I do the asking instead.
I don't want to die an old maid,
So I sing him this serenade:

Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar.
I'll make a better man of you.
Walter, Walter, buy the bricks an' mortar,
And we'll build a love nest for two.
I've just been sorting out me trousseau.
My bridal gown's as good as new.
Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar,
An' make all me nightmares come true.

Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar.
I don't cost much to keep in food.
Walter, Walter, Mother says you ought ter,
So take me while she's in the mood.
You know I'm very fond of chickens.
We'll raise a lovely little brood.
Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar,
An' I'll show ya where I'm tattooed.
