Subject: Lyr Add: O, FAIR NEW MEXICO (Elizabeth Garrett)
From: Amos
Date: 15 Jul 01 - 11:46 PM

'S far as I know there is no actual song called "New Mexico, Land of Enchantment". Maybe the one you are looking for is this, which was written by the daughter of Pat Garrett (the man who shot Billy the Kid), and was adopted as the state song for, naturally, New Mexico:

O, FAIR NEW MEXICO
Written by: Elizabeth Garrett

1. Under a sky of azure, where balmy breezes blow,
Kissed by the golden sunshine, is Nuevo Mejico.
Land of the Montezuma, with fiery hearts aglow,
State of the deeds historic, is Nuevo Mejico.

CHORUS: O, fair New Mexico, we love, we love you so.
Our hearts with pride o'erflow, no matter where we go.
O, fair New Mexico, we love, we love you so,
The grandest state to know, New Mexico.

2. Rugged and high sierras, with deep canyons below,
Dotted with fertile valleys, is Nuevo Mejico.
Fields full of sweet alfalfa, richest perfumes bestow,
State of apple blossoms, is Nuevo Mejico.

3. Days that are full of heart-dreams, nights when the moon hangs low;
Beaming its benediction o'er Nuevo Mejico.
Land with its bright manana, coming through weal and woe;
State of our esperanza, is Nuevo Mejico.

Regards,
A

According to a Michael Murphey cd insert, his version of 'Land of Enchantment' IS the New Mexico state song. I can send the chords and lyrics to you within the nest day or so. What key would you like it in?

Try this also:

There is a land of dusty roads,
Rattlesnakes and horny toads,
It never rains, it never shows,
New Mexico, we love you so!

Subject: Lyr Add: LAND OF ENCHANTMENT (M M Murphey)
From: Jim Dixon

This web site calls it the "official state ballad of New Mexico." Is that different from an official state song? Do they have both?

LAND OF ENCHANTMENT - NEW MEXICO
Words and music by Michael Martin Murphey, Chick Raines and Don Cook

I met a lady in my drifting days.
I quickly fell under the spell of her loving ways.
A rose in the desert, I loved her so,
In the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico.

As we watched the sunset by the Rio Grande,
A mission bell rang farewell. she took my hand.
She said, "come back, amigo, no matter where you go"
To the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico.

From her arms I wandered far across the sea.
I often heard her gentle words haunting me:
"Come back, amigo. I miss you so"
To the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico.

So come back, amigo, no matter where you go,
To the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico.

Jim, the lyrics posted first in this thread are the words to the official song of NM.

We had to learn it as kiddos in grade school.

If you don't know the tune, thank your lucky stars. Its pathetic.

I vaguely remember MMM's song, but its been a while since I've heard it. It beats the official song hands down.

Raised in Santa Fe, over 50 years ago, I knew about Elizabeth Garrett's song, but we never sang it. It was mentioned occasionally, usually with some humorous remark. Santa Fe, at the time, was still over 50% Hispanic, and much of what I remember of the music in school was of traditional Spanish or Mexican pieces. In chorus, we sang some of the old favorite parlor songs of the 19th c., especially Foster, known to both Hispanics and Anglos (to the locals, anyone with a non-Spanish name).

As freightdawg says, the tune is pathetic; and the words equally so. I have my grandmother's original sheet music of the piece- it is good for a laugh.

The MMM piece is trite, but the tune is far superior to that of the state song.

I think the motto "Land of Enchantment" originated in the 1920s in Santa Fe Railroad tourist blurbs, but not sure). It did not become the official State motto until 1999, but had been used for many years.

The official state song is "Oh Fair New Mexico," by Elizabeth Garrett.

There is no "official state ballad."

Re. Absence of Sheet Music to " Land of Enchantment " by M.M.Murphey.

I am totally mystified ! This appears to me to be some small minded owner of the copyright to this beautiful melody that refuses publication of the music in Sheet Music form. Why ? I just cannot understand this " dog in the manger " attitude when so many enthusiastic musicians obviously want to play this song as written in it's original format. Baffles me!!!

The way we sang it when I was a kid in Carlsbad was:

There is a land of dusty roads,
rattlesnakes and horny toads
Where nothing moves, and nothing grows,
the god damn wind just blows and blows
New Mexico, so fertile and rich,
we think you are a honey.

I notice that Frank Staplin dismisses this Music as " trite " which in my dictionary reads as - " dull, worn, hackneyed. "

He has obviously not heard this music played as a Bolero with sensuous Conga drum rhythms in the Latin manner!

He is of course entitled to his opinion, but perhaps as he is getting on in years his mind has become " trite " ?

Another version:
There is a land of dusty roads
Of rattlesnakes and horny toads
It never rains; it never snows
The goddamn wind just blows and blows
But when the sage and cactus bloom
We love to smell their sweet perfume
New Mexico, so fertile and rich
We think you are a … honey.

Sung to the tune of Tannenbaum (Oh Christmas Tree)
