Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: Allan Conn Date: 30 Jul 21 - 02:17 AM Yeah they initially had chart success in the US - not quite the heady big #1 spots they had in the UK but success just the same - then the received a ban from playing there which lasted for several years to the end of the 60s. So their hits dried up and some of their most iconic songs just made no impact in the US. Davies seems to suggest though that some of these loved songs might not have been created without the ban. “It made me root myself more in Europe, the folk tradition in Britain,” he told Tom. "Perhaps, on the flip side, if that ban hadn’t been implemented, ‘Waterloo Sunset’ would never have been written." Funnily enough from the late 70s through the 80s they seem to have had more success in the US than here. Though their songs were often covered by other UK artists. https://www.newstalk.com/the-tom-dunne-show/kinks-frontman-ray-davies-on-his-bands-infamous-us-ban-700369 |
Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: keberoxu Date: 29 Jul 21 - 11:16 PM Growing up in the US I heard a lot of "Tired of Waiting" as well as the early loud fast songs. "Tired of Waiting" is a curious hybrid of a song. It can actually haunt the memory: "tired of waiting for you - ou - ou ..." the melody clinches it, I think. And the song itself is loud and jangly in some spots and soft and lyrical in others. |

Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: Allan Conn Date: 28 Jul 21 - 12:21 PM Certainly as far as the list I posted goes I don't think the issue was always whether it was a big hit. "Come Dancing" was actually a big hit in the UK almost reaching the top 10. Their biggest hit post 1970. Whereas "Village Green" made #3 in the list but was a commercial flop as a single. And for women "Celluloid Heroes" was very popular but again was a commercial flop at the time. |

Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Jul 21 - 05:29 AM I don't have many pop CDs in my car. Sgt Pepper and Revolver are permanent residents, as are greatest hits compilations of the Beach Boys, Mamas And Papas and Abba (quiet, please...) But my Kinks one has a place of honour. For me, Waterloo Sunset is one of the very best sixties songs. For the one designated spot in my desert island eight for a pop song, it would be a fierce battle between Waterloo Sunset and Here Comes The Sun... |
Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Jul 21 - 02:17 AM I was surprised that "Come Dancing" didn't make it on anyones list but then read that it initially failed to chart in the UK. It tied with "Tired of Waiting" as the highest US chart entry for them and subsequently charted in the UK too. Quite poignant for Davies as it was inspired by his older sister who had died of a heart attack while Dancing! |

Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: DaveRo Date: 26 Jul 21 - 11:18 AM There are so many good songs by Ray Davies. Sometime during my aMule days I acquired a Greatest Hits album which includes 'Come Dancing', which is now one of my favourites. "The song was inspired by Davies' memories of his older sister, Rene, who died of a heart attack while dancing at a dance hall. The lyrics, sung from the perspective of an "East End barrow boy," are about the boy's sister going on dates at a local Palais dance hall." (from WikiPedia) (I'm not sure about the East End barrow boy: Ray lived in Muswell Hill which is quite genteel.) Here's a youtube, with no pictures: https://youtube.com/watch?v=AEeH5OkjeIY I've sung Kinks songs in a U3A singing group. Everybody know them. If not, in Dedicated Follower they do the 'Oh yes he is!" responses. In Waterloo Sunset I divide them in into sections to do the Sha-la-la's and the vocal harmonies. It's not exactly choral music, but fun. I always think of this song when I'm around Waterloo of an evening, which is quite often - or was. How we made Waterloo Sunset |
Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: gillymor Date: 26 Jul 21 - 09:54 AM Yeah, Sunny Afternoon is one of my all-time favorite songs since I first heard it all those decades ago. Nellie McKay did a great cover or it, as well. |
Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: Allan Conn Date: 26 Jul 21 - 09:39 AM Not that it means that much but just out of interest I checked on Ranker (one of these sites where votes are cast for favourite songs) and this was the top 10 songs by the Kinks on that. 1. Waterloo Sunset 2. Lola 3. Village Green Preservation Society 4. Dead End Street 5. You Really Got Me 6. Shangri La 7. Well Respected Man 8. Days 9. Sunny Afternoon 10. All Day And All Of The Night I was maybe a wee bit surprised that "Sunny Afternoon" wasn't a wee bit higher as it seems to be one of the better known ones. If you broke it down into the sexes then with men "Victoria" was in the top 5 and with women "Celluloid Heroes" was. |

Neither. KINKS. Choral arrangements of all their best (and second-best) stuff. Absolutely brilliant, should be obligatory listening for those of a certain age. Hear it on the U-bend, the CD can also be found for sale online. |
Subject: RE: Songs of the Kinks / Ray Davies From: Allan Conn Date: 26 Jul 21 - 02:26 AM My wife has a FB friend who regularly posts charts from certain years from both the UK and US. Obviously a lot of crossover but it is amazing how many on the US list we've never heard of - even from our late teens and twenties etc. Then there are songs which were massive iconic hits in one of the countries but didn't even chart in the other. One glaring example of that is "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks - see clicky below. One of their biggest hits and certainly one of the most iconic songs by any 60s band - but it didn't even figure in the US charts. I think by the time this was released they were in their period of being banned from playing in the US which lasted for about 4 years until the end of the decade basically. Unlike "Waterloo Sunset" or "Sunny Afternoon" the "Village Green" album and single were commercial flops at the time but the album has real legs and is thought of highly now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqLoYQx8BXo |

Subject: ADD: Sunny Afternoon (Ray Davies) From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jul 21 - 09:09 PM SUNNY AFTERNOON (Ray Davies) The tax man's taken all my dough, And left me in my stately home, Lazing on a sunny afternoon. And I can't sail my yacht, He's taken everything I've got, All I've got's this sunny afternoon. Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze. I got a big fat mama trying to break me. And I love to live so pleasantly, Live this life of luxury, Lazing on a sunny afternoon. In the summertime In the summertime In the summertime My girlfriend's run off with my car, And gone back to her ma and pa, Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty. Now I'm sitting here, Sipping at my ice cold beer, Lazing on a sunny afternoon. Help me, help me, help me sail away, Well give me two good reasons why I oughta stay. 'Cause I love to live so pleasantly, Live this life of luxury, Lazing on a sunny afternoon. In the summertime In the summertime In the summertime Ah, save me, save me, save me from this squeeze. I got a big fat mama trying to break me. And I love to live so pleasantly, Live this life of luxury, Lazing on a sunny afternoon. In the summertime In the summertime In the summertime Originally released as a single on 3rd June 1966, it stayed at number one on the UK singles chart for two weeks, and peaked at No.14 in the US. The track features on the bands fourth studio album Face To Face, released in October 1966. Face To Face was a major artistic breakthrough for Kinks’ songwriter Ray Davies, the LP represents the first full flowering of Davies’ use of narrative, observation, and wry social commentary in his songs. It heralded The Kinks’ move away from the hard-driving rock and roll style of 1964-65, which had catapulted the group to international stardom. It was the first Kinks album consisting entirely of Ray Davies compositions, and was their first album recorded over several months, rather than in one concentrated session Kinks Recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYIl6n_SRCI |

Subject: ADD: Well-Respected Man (Ray Davies)-Kinks From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jul 21 - 09:05 PM A WELL-RESPECTED MAN (Ray Davies) 'Cause he gets up in the morning, And he goes to work at nine, And he comes back home at five-thirty, Gets the same train every time. 'Cause his world is built 'round punctuality, It never fails. And he's oh, so good, And he's oh, so fine, And he's oh, so healthy, In his body and his mind. He's a well respected man about town, Doing the best things so conservatively. And his mother goes to meetings, While his father pulls the maid, And she stirs the tea with councilors, While discussing foreign trade, And she passes looks, as well as bills, At every suave young man. 'Cause he's oh, so good, And he's oh, so fine, And he's oh, so healthy, In his body and his mind. He's a well respected man about town, Doing the best things so conservatively. And he likes his own backyard, And he likes his fags the best, 'Cause he's better than the rest, And his own sweat smells the best, And he hopes to grab his father's loot, When Pater passes on. 'Cause he's oh, so good, And he's oh, so fine, And he's oh, so healthy, In his body and his mind. He's a well respected man about town, Doing the best things so conservatively. And he plays at stocks and shares, And he goes to the regatta, And he adores the girl next door, 'Cause he's dying to get at her, But his mother knows the best about The matrimonial stakes. 'Cause he's oh, so good, And he's oh, so fine, And he's oh, so healthy, In his body and his mind. He's a well respected man about town, Doing the best things so conservatively.
