So their hits dried up and some of their most iconic songs just made no impact in the US. Davies seems to suggest though that some of these loved songs might not have been created without the ban. “It made me root myself more in Europe, the folk tradition in Britain,” he told Tom. "Perhaps, on the flip side, if that ban hadn’t been implemented, ‘Waterloo Sunset’ would never have been written." Funnily enough from the late 70s through the 80s they seem to have had more success in the US than here. "Tired of Waiting" is a curious hybrid of a song. It can actually haunt the memory: "tired of waiting for you - ou - ou ..." the melody clinches it, I think. And the song itself is loud and jangly in some spots and soft and lyrical in others. |

"Come Dancing" was actually a big hit in the UK almost reaching the top 10. Their biggest hit post 1970. Whereas "Village Green" made #3 in the list but was a commercial flop as a single. And for women "Celluloid Heroes" was very popular but again was a commercial flop at the time. |

For the one designated spot in my desert island eight for a pop song, it would be a fierce battle between Waterloo Sunset and Here Comes The Sun... |

It tied with "Tired of Waiting" as the highest US chart entry for them and subsequently charted in the UK too. Quite poignant for Davies as it was inspired by his older sister who had died of a heart attack while Dancing! |

Sometime during my aMule days I acquired a Greatest Hits album which includes 'Come Dancing', which is now one of my favourites. "The song was inspired by Davies' memories of his older sister, Rene, who died of a heart attack while dancing at a dance hall. The lyrics, sung from the perspective of an "East End barrow boy," are about the boy's sister going on dates at a local Palais dance hall." (from WikiPedia) (I'm not sure about the East End barrow boy: Ray lived in Muswell Hill which is quite genteel.) If not, in Dedicated Follower they do the 'Oh yes he is!" responses. In Waterloo Sunset I divide them in into sections to do the Sha-la-la's and the vocal harmonies. Waterloo Sunset 2. Lola 3. Village Green Preservation Society 4. Dead End Street 5. You Really Got Me 6. Shangri La 7. Well Respected Man 8. Days 9. Sunny Afternoon 10. All Day And All Of The Night I was maybe a wee bit surprised that "Sunny Afternoon" wasn't a wee bit higher as it seems to be one of the better known ones. If you broke it down into the sexes then with men "Victoria" was in the top 5 and with women "Celluloid Heroes" was. |

Obviously a lot of crossover but it is amazing how many on the US list we've never heard of - even from our late teens and twenties etc. Then there are songs which were massive iconic hits in one of the countries but didn't even chart in the other. One glaring example of that is "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks - see clicky below. One of their biggest hits and certainly one of the most iconic songs by any 60s band - but it didn't even figure in the US charts. I think by the time this was released they were in their period of being banned from playing in the US which lasted for about 4 years until the end of the decade basically.
