Subject: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 17 Jul 01 - 06:31 AM My daughter will be spending her next semester of college in London and Lancaster. Micca has already generously offered to be a point of contact for her. Of course there is a whole school organization set up for her to depend on but it would be nice for friends to be there to show her the local fun things that the regular tourists don't ordinarily see. Is anyone willing to offer to help her enjoy her stay in England? How far is The Jug from Lancaster? How many Mudcats live in or near that town? (Please note, I will be asking my other Mudcat friends to vouch for you. This is my first born child and I have to feel safe about you myself. If you feel insulted by this I apologize but do not retract my words. We all know the myths and legends about the people on the Internet. Every Mudcatter I have met to date has proven to be good people. Still, a father worries...) |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: bill\sables Date: 17 Jul 01 - 06:41 AM Brett, The Jug is about 70 to 80 miles away from Lancaster which in the UK is a reasonably long way. She would probably have to change trains about 5 times as it is across country. But as I said before she is welcome to come over any time. Noreen lives much closer to Lancaster. She along with Catrin, Dave the Gnome, Spot the Dog, Geordie Broon, Joan from Wigin, Clansfolk etc live in the same county. I have met these people and you can trust them all. They are all good people. Bill |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Geoff the Duck Date: 17 Jul 01 - 06:49 AM I think Bill has said it all! She will be welcome if she gets to the Jug, If it is not a Wednesday, I am sure some of us will arrange a Special Session if we are not away! Always ready to meet new faces. Geoff and the Ducks! |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 07:02 AM Don't let English Jon read this thread! |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 17 Jul 01 - 08:39 AM Well, as I said, I am not too concerned about my fellow Mudcatters. Actually I might be more concerned for their safety if they tried anything. She has been studying karate and cuong nhu for the last several years. She can accurately throw knife and tomahawk though it is unlikely she will be carrying any such thing with her. I have a vision of some punk confronting her in the street some day and waking up three days later in the hospital. Oh, and she thought, when I told her three Mudcatters would be staying with me, that they would be "old" like her Dad. She was pleasantly surprised to meet Sam and Ian. She thought they were cute. Be on your guard, guys! |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Louisa Date: 17 Jul 01 - 08:54 AM Why is that, Jim? Louisa |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 09:06 AM Louisa Err...how can I put this delicately? Let's just say that if it's female with a pulse, then that'll do. Of course I'm saving myself for when I'm married. JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Louisa Date: 17 Jul 01 - 09:13 AM Not very delicate but obviously good advice! Very glad to hear you're saving yourself....! How do you cope? Louisa
|
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Jul 01 - 09:13 AM Lancaster's up the other end of the country - but there's a lively folk scene round that part of the world. She's not far from Fleetwood, where there's a great festival, and the Fylde (the area round Blackpool) where there's a lot happening it looks. Anyway, here's a site that links to things like that
And here is a link to a lot of stuff about folk music happenings. And here is the Folk Roots fest rival list
Make sure she has a Mudcat T-shirt for festivals. She should have a good time anyway.
And, in the light of here hobbies, tell her to ask about Les Barker's poem Cosmo the Fairly Accurate knife-thrower - or maybe someone on the Mudcat could post a copy. |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 10:01 AM Louisa How do I cope? Selective memory and lying through my teeth, that's how. JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Louisa Date: 17 Jul 01 - 10:04 AM mmm thought so, actually I know EJ (vaguely) so I aas joking when I asked! Louisa
|
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: English Jon Date: 17 Jul 01 - 10:21 AM Hmmm. Jim Cheydi, shame on you. I look positively virtuous when stood beside you. Mind you, you have more luck than me. Must be the biker image. EJ Anyway, the cat seems to do better than either of us in that respect. |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Noreen Date: 17 Jul 01 - 10:24 AM Hi, Brett. Of course I'll do whatever I can to make your daughter welcome, paticularly as I have been pre-vouched for! Lancaster would be an hour or so's drive from where I live, and there is plenty of music around here. Is your daughter musical, or would she prefer other stuff? She is very welcome to stay with me if she wants to visit this area. Let us know places and dates and things will be arranged. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 10:37 AM EJ That cat's beating them off with a stick. Mind you, they haven't seen him eat. They'll scraping chilli off the walls in Cleckheaton for months! JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: English Jon Date: 17 Jul 01 - 10:53 AM JC, I assume the missing verb is "be"? Yes, the cat did scoff a fair bit of chilli, haven't we got photos to prove it somewhere? (How did the Brett get into this thread? Not the same badger-boy, I assume?) EJ
|
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:00 AM EJ, Brett=Naemanson. By the way, for those who might like the idea of making off with my daughter you should know I am bigger than any of the other Mudcatters and when it comes to my kids I am tougher too! (Bellowing a challenge to the sky as I beat upon my breast with closed fists!) I would direct you to look at my profile picture of Roll & Go on the stage of the Chocolate Church. No one in the group is under 5'5" tall. Consider well.... [Bill, do you think that intimidated anyone?]
|
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:05 AM Bet you ain't tougher than the cat! JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: English Jon Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:08 AM I'm sorry Naemanson, if you knew the Brett we know... ROFLOL. Anyway, I'm not interested in your daughter unless it's her round. EJ

Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: bill\sables Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:15 AM Brett is big fella but he is realy a very nice guy. There again when a daughters honour is concerned he might turn from a pussy cat to a tiger. |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:18 AM Well, actually, none of you have a chance with her. She wants Sean Connery, or his double, complete with Scottish accent. It may be a problem because she doesn't drink! |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: bill\sables Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:21 AM I think the best thing to do Brett is for you to come across with her till she is settled in. I'm sure we could find a few places where you would be able to sing your shanties. Bill |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: English Jon Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:24 AM "Brett is big fella but he is realy a very nice guy." I was right. Not the same Brett at all. "Well, actually, none of you have a chance with her." There you go Cheydi - you like a challenge. And you can practice next season's comedy accent. But, why does she want a double if she doesn't drink? Anyway, England being tiny we're bound to bump into her sooner or later... Maybe I'll get arrested again. EJ |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 11:53 AM Deffo not the same Brett! True, I've never been shy of a challenge, but let's face it the cat'll be in there before I can move to LA to get the Scottish accent right ;-P Doesn't drink? She soon will. There's nothing else to do when you're at college here. Gonne get myself, gonna get myself, gonna get myself.... JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: dwditty Date: 17 Jul 01 - 12:00 PM Whew, my daughter just returned from 6 months in France. From the sounds of things, a young woman's virtue is much sought after across the pond. Nothing like that in the states. *BG* dw |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Louisa Date: 17 Jul 01 - 12:17 PM Don't get the wrong idea about us, dw! I wish I never asked JC in the first place now. Pretty sure they're joking.. Louisa |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 12:26 PM Not about the cat. JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Louisa Date: 17 Jul 01 - 12:32 PM Sorry, please explain this cat business Louisa
|
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 17 Jul 01 - 12:51 PM EJ's cat travels with us and is the centre of much female attention wherever he goes. True. JC |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Eric the Viking Date: 17 Jul 01 - 01:40 PM Do you look like a sheep? OK, then you are safe. Apart from the fact that I'm old, NOT LIKE BILL, and the mrs would beat me up, but the jug is the place to go. Noreen would really look after you. Gaz is not far from you at Blackpool. There is also Llanstock in October.Catrin, Spot, DtG and quite a few others in the Lancs area. Look out for EJ and Jim, I've seen their CAT, keep away-by the way how was the curry lads? The only way they could get to be like Sean connery is to tell you that they have pussy galore ! Lancaster is a nice place-I can say that as I am not from Yorkshire. There is so much of England that is excellent but not touristy, so there is scope for that. What are you reading? Are you at the Uni? What else can we do to help? Cheers Eric |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Jul 01 - 07:13 PM Is she any good at babysitting?? We could help out with accommodation..... Leaving her with Micca would be like putting the canary in the cat basket for a rest..... And we share an interest (!) in Sean Connery.. If she comes to babysit, she can watch my Connery collection on vid.... (not letting her near the picture though.....) LTS |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Jim Cheydi Date: 18 Jul 01 - 05:19 AM EtV You seem to forget that EJ and me both have Sean Connery haircuts - and we've got more of a choice about it (espesh EJ). The ruby was a bit disappointing, but at least there was plenty of it. |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Jul 01 - 05:47 AM She'd be mighty welcome in Manchester, Naemanson. 1 short train ride away and, apparantly, the 'clubbing' capital of the North. I have 2 teenage daughters myself and I know how you feel so please feel free get in touch with anyone who knows me - Mostly listed by Bill and inclded in the above thread. My daughters, at 16, are a bit young for the club scene but boy do they know how to shop! If she wants to spend serious money I'm sure they would help her choose the right places;-) My 20 year old son is at University himself but if he was home (Most weekends) I am sure him and his friends and girlfriends would be happy to show her the nightlife. Remember that anyone over 18 (or even looking vauguely over 18 in some pubs!) can buy alcohol in England. Probably worth mentioning in case that kind of thing is of concern to you. I am close enough to Lancaster to be there within the hour if she has any problems. I think Clansfolk might be nearer still. PM me if you want any more details. Cheers Dave the Gnome |

Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Gervase Date: 18 Jul 01 - 06:43 AM Naemanson, are you sure you want your beloved daughter to come to a land populated by randy talking cats and frustrated blokes with permanent hangovers? |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: GUEST,Jock Morris @ work in Edinburgh Date: 18 Jul 01 - 07:57 AM Well Naemanson, I'm Scottish, bald on top and have a beard; about as close to Sean Connery as your likely to get on Mudcat:-) Does your daughter want to come to Edinburgh?:-) Joking! Please don't hit me, I'm allergic to pain:-) Scott |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: clansfolk Date: 18 Jul 01 - 08:13 AM The Falcon at Poulton-le-Fylde has a regular folk sing around Wednesdays from 9.00pm - open mike without the mike!!

Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 18 Jul 01 - 08:17 AM LOL, all of you. I am not concerned about her decisions regarding drinking, sex, or night clubs. She has a good head on her shoulders and is loaded with common sense. My concern is the people she falls in with and what they might do. I asked her if she would mind before I started this thread. I warned her that she might end up exposed to some seriously weird people. She laughed and commented that she had been around my friends all her life and none came weirder than that. I don't know if I should feel complimented or insulted. Oh, and she is allergic to animal fur, including cats, so she may not be much of a visitor to some of you. Sorry EJC. |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: English Jon Date: 18 Jul 01 - 08:19 AM Even synthetic fur? corrrr..shit. EJC |

Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Eric the Viking Date: 18 Jul 01 - 01:19 PM I;ll have you know geoff the duck, there is no inbreeding with me- Suffolks, black face, Cotswolds all fell foul to the hunting of the viking randy goatherd club in the past-by the way, you know "that rooster" !I don't drink, and I have no animal hairs, they are all synthetic. Naemanson, tell her not to hang out with folkies they are all bloddy nutters and weird. There must be some well dressed, respectable young men and drug dealers around the area who drive around in their cars with 260db of sound pounding away. Cheers Eric |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 13 Aug 01 - 12:00 PM She is headed for England on August 28. She'll be in London for about a month and then head for Lancaster. They are giving her five days to make the trip so she can see some of the country. If you are interested in having her get in touch with you either before she leaves the US or after she gets over there please PM me with some contact information. I will pass on all your details to her and leave it up to her to contact you. She did say she would like to see Bill, Ian, and Sam again. Thanks for your interest. Brett |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Mrs.Duck Date: 13 Aug 01 - 12:11 PM Well if she can make it from London to Yorkshire by the 29th she'll just be in time for the regular Wednesday night at the Jug and I'm sure if Sam and Ian are about they'd be there and Bill and finding her a good home to stay at shouldn't be a problem (Bill's probably)And I know Syd at the JUg will love it - he enjoys having Mudcatters visit from Anywhere! |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:18 PM Well, she is there and having the time of her life. She'll be in London until the end of September then off to Lancaster. She is seeing all the usual tourist sights. Anybody got some of the out of the way sights she could go to? |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:24 PM Perhaps a visit to a Tibetan monastery? I mean that is out of the way......... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:35 PM Well, her field of study is history and religion so don't sell the monastery short. Of course, who knows what kind of job she can get with that degree. Can you say "Do you want fries with that?"! |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:45 PM Quite similar prospects to Max, Bill D., and myself......All have Philosophy degrees and I found out that if you take it to McDonalds and give them a dollar, they'll give you a cup of coffee! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Daughter going to England From: Naemanson Date: 01 Sep 01 - 10:06 PM Will the degree insulate your lap if you spill that coffee on yourself? |
