A frequent cause of requests for lyrics which are already present appears to be the variety of title for many traditional songs. Some examples include
Musgrave (Little Mousgrove, and the Lady Barnet, Matty/Mattie Groves, A lamentable ballad of Little Musgrove, and the lady Barnet, etc),
Cluster of Nuts (The Comical Wager, Jack and his nuts)
Six jovial tradesmen or Joan's ale is new, Jones's ale, Joan's ale was new, Johns ale
Is there any way in which a cross-reference could be set up, preferably so that new variants could be added as found? Looks like the only way at present is to add the whole song again (Or am I missing something)

Malcolm has done quite a bit of this in forum threads. Joe has done some in formatting tunes for the next release of the DT.

Part of what needs to be remembered is that though the MudCat hosts the DT - the online version is NOT where the corrections and additions take place.

Another factor is that the search engine searches on text, not title...which makes life more - - - interesting?

I notice now that something like this has been suggested in previous threads. Note that I didn't mention the DT in my suggestion. Ideally, in the cross reference there would be one main entry for each 'song group' to which anyone could add extra entries. Of course, you would have to be able to find the right one in the first place!

A data table of synonyms could be set up such that a query was directed through the synonyms list before returning its answer. Dunno who would have the patience to set it up, though! Key-word attributes and synonym attributes appended to the individual records woyuld be a better design, actually.

I've been adding lists of keywords and alternate spellings to the end to the text of DigiTrad submissions and corrections, when I think of it. We also like to add songwriter information when we can. Just post it, and we'll try to harvest and submit it.
Maybe some day we'll make a major project of adding keywords and making corrections to the DT. Right now, Dick and Susan are mostly involved in adding tunes and in getting out a downloadable version of the DT that will work on newer operating systems.
But if you post suggestions for corrections, we'll do our best to collect them and add them to the DT.
