I agree with you Guest, cretinous yahoo. I once knew a man in the UK in the 60's with no right hand but it didn't stop him from playing guitar very well. He used to play the chords with three fingers on his left hand and strum with his little finger. He was also pretty good on anglo concertina. I have seen many fiddlers with only three fingers on their left hands.

Every time I hear someone say they cant play this or that because their hands or fingers are too small, I think of an old time musician from upstate NY by the name of "Daddy Dick Richards". He had no left hand at all, yet, he played fiddle, guitar and bass. Of course he was limited, he played the guitar tuned to a major key, and, he was never a threat to Jasha Hiefitz on the fiddle, but, he was a respectible bass player. He had a tough projection on his left wrist which served as a finger.

In Florida, at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, I saw a man with no RIGHT arm at all playing some absolutly beautiful music on an electric guitar. He did everything with his left hand, using harmonics, hammering on and pulling off. Incredible.

I get much more range from my 18" than from my 16"

I didn't think you were supposed to throw them.

Yes it does. I get much more range from my 18" than from my 16". Now, some Hranners will say that smaller is better, but usually, it's cause thay have a small one. I can do everthing and more with my 18 that I can do with my 16, except that it won't fit in some places, like under the seat in front of me on a small aircraft.

'G'? Right Dave? ;)

Alex, there are sites for it, I just can't seem to get any links to work today. Have a good time Margo! Any chance darlin'hubby will let you come out and play for the AcousticCafe?

Actually, size don't matter.

Mobile Phones are just about the only thing that men boast about how small theirs is.

How about EGADS!

I may not make Tumbleweed because I'm going to Puget Sound Guitar Workshop for the first time this year, and I'm leaving my ever so tolerant husband with our two special needs kids for a whole week. I'll probably stay home after that... Margo

LOL Graham! Actually, the 'E' lends itself to more of a colourful adjective to describe the blue words themselves... The one that made my buddy's face pale was the growling of 'eggsuckin'sunufaBITCH'... :)

An interesting thought, Jen. Just one question - what do you swear with for an E? My blue vocabulary is missing an entry there. I must admit, I've been responsible for a few "Bastard Sevenths" myself when I was learning that chord... :-)

Graham.

Or lots of LITTLE HANDS! LOL

Yup, I was at Tumbleweed last year, only for the Sunday though. Are you going this year?

Interesting evolution, a buddy of mine has noticed that the longer I've been playing, the more often the actual swearing begins to correspond with the chord in question. The 'F' makes the cats disappear for hours....

I've always said it isn't what you got it's what you do with it.... I've got long fingers myself, but still couldn't manage the guitar, being a very strong southpaw, it was just all upsidedown and the wrong way round to me..

MouseMan, your relief is duly noted... :o))

Margo, no longer worried about size

No Margo, on the East side near the Tri-Cities. Are you going to be able to make it for the Northwest Gathering? I could at least teach you some new words...*grin*

Nope, no innuendo here, just another member of the "Tiny Paw Society". Congratulations to you!

I had similar difficulties here recently, and have noticed great improvement through practice (a LOT of swearing) and stretching. There are great exercises posted here under one of the 'F' threads by our StRick. They really do work.

From: Margo

I was in my guitar lesson the other day when I remarked that I wished that my hands were larger. My teacher then proceeded to tell me that Wayne Henderson's fingers are shorter than mine....

I'm 5'2" so you can imagine my hands are proportionate for a person of my stature. After examining my hands and considering what my teacher told me I've decided that they're not bad at all. They're plenty broad so I have some reach.

And lo and behold, after complaining (really, wishing I was different) my muscles kicked in and I am fretting strongly with my pinky. Ain't that the way? I've been humbled.

So I admit that size doesn't matter, it's just what you do with your hands.

Margo

(I can hear them now; no wonder she likes sea shanteys... all that innuendo...)
