Subject: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: Sooz Date: 19 Jul 01 - 04:03 PM I just wondered how many Folk Clubs met in unlikley places. A couple we go to regularly are in a Fire Station (Bingham Click here) and in a Cyber Cafe run by a delightful Sri Lankan lady who makes wicked onion bhajis (Lincoln) They both make our club (Gainsborough Click here ) look quite ordinary being in a pub. Not any old pub though, its a converted riverside warehouse with 8 real ales always available. Any more for any more? |

Subject: RE: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: Murray MacLeod Date: 19 Jul 01 - 05:42 PM The Edinburgh University Folk Club used to meet in an underground vault in the Old Town of Edinburgh.(In the basement of a disused church?) Very Burke and Hare. Marvellous acoustics however, and in that environment Alistair Anderson's concertina sounded like a church organ. The Watersons used to sound like a 100 piece choir down there. Subject: RE: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Jul 01 - 06:30 PM Well Stortfolk in Bishops Stortford meet every Thursday in a church vestry. Which has a bar, unlike most church vestries. Very cheap drinks too. |

Subject: RE: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: Mr Red Date: 19 Jul 01 - 06:44 PM Folk at Frampton, Frampton on Severn Gloucs may not be wildly twee being in a Village Hall but it does allow the odd dance in any given evening. Every Tuesday 8pm - 10.30 ish. BYO as the Kiwis say. |

Subject: RE: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Jul 01 - 08:58 PM But surely you've got some pubs over there as well? Or at least places that aspire to be pubs. |

Subject: RE: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: sophocleese Date: 19 Jul 01 - 09:43 PM The Orillia Folk Society Song Circle meets in the local Friend's Meetinghouse. The acoustics are decent, the rent's low, there's no alcohol involved, but no smoke either and we aren't competing with televisions or canned music. |

Subject: RE: Venues: not all folk clubs are in Pubs! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 20 Jul 01 - 02:22 PM Of course a lot of things started in coffee bars, like the Troubadour the Partisan and Bunjies in London. Any luck in such places these days (apart from the one Sooz mentioned above)? |
