You probably don't know me - I only tend post on music threads, and I also changed my 'handle' to zebedee for a while.

So I probably won't be missed.

However, I like Jon Freeman, have had enough of mudcat as it currently stands.

Bye bye all

Ed

Ed,

you will be missed in the music threads, for your Carthy lyrics, but not only for them. Try coming back later. If you haven't logged out PM me and send me your E-Mail if you still want to get 'Watersons' from Barker.

Ed, several times during the past few weeks I've thought that Mudcat is really going down the tubes. Then it occurred to me: "Why am I wasting my time sitting here reading this crap? I don't like nasty arguments, and yet here I am. It's like morbidly watching a car wreck. And I actually posted to some of these threads! What the hell is the matter with me??" I clicked on my "Back" button, read the list of threads, and found lots of threads on music and music related stuff.

The "Back" button has become one of my favorite buttons, much like the "Mute" button on my TV remote. If I don't like what's going on in one thread, I leave and find one I do like.

There's a lot of good stuff here and you have a lot to offer. Don't let the philistines drive you out.

Don Firth

Which ones are the philistines?

Well, I'm a philipstine. Perhaps I enjoy it all because I'm just a Hran plyer, or player, whatever... you know, not a real musician. I'm staying because I enjoy the music and non-music threads alike. Plus, I shelled out my donation a while back and I'm too cheap to leave. I'm going to stay and have a rotten time no matter what. Lately, it has been kinda down around here, what with all the bitching that this place isn't perfect. Maybe if the whining stopped, people wouldn't feel compelled to "leave".

See ya Ed. Best wishes.

Well shucks; can't blame "Usual Suspects" MAV and I, (as many seem wont to do) since we've both been predominantly in absentia for quite a while, here.
MAV is currently back home in Nebraska visiting his folks there, but never fear; he'll be baaaaack!.
I keep an eye on things here, and can't say that I've seen anything going downhill or becoming any more "offensive" than normal - certainly nothing approaching the level I couldn't put up with. The positive community spirit, interchange of music, information and ideas we share here far outweigh any disgrundlement or discord encountered.

Like anything, it ain't for everybody, and the back door swings both ways; likely as not there are at least two enthusiastic initiates coming in the front door for every malcontent shuffling out the back. I 'spect Ol' Mudcat'll be 'round here a spell despite a certain turnaround in participants. I can live with that.

Can't change anything if you do belong. Someone advised me to ignore the threads I don't like and that seems to work for me. I read a couple a day and that's sufficent. I'm sorry to see the music people leaving though. I suspect I will be reading fewer next week.

What is it about the internet? I don't understand it. I have seen so many misunderstandings and even all out wars that I believe never would have happened if people had been face to face.

I am sorry that anyone feels it necessary to leave, though I truly understand the impetus. When even one person (not including trolls) leaves, it diminishes the forum.

For my part, I regret seeing anyone of value throw up there hands and retreat from so innocuous a thing as threads of midget venom.

It strikes me like Gulliver waking up on the beach, covered with itsy-bitsy Lilliputian strings, and just saying, "Aw, screw it!" and going back to sleep!!

What kind of an ending is that, Ed?

A

I find it strange/peculiar/mystifying (and a whole lot of other words too) why someone should feel important enough to announce they are leaving Mudcat.

Hell . . I leave it a few times a week and nobody notices.

That does not lessen my enjoyment of leaving . . and returning.

Happiness is six inches (15cm) . . between your ears.

Strictly speaking noone can "leave" the Mudcat, even metaphorically. They can always cut down on the time they spend visiting, or stop posting, or leave off opening it up and looking through the posts.

But the name they've been using is still here, and the posts they've made are still in the archive, accessible to all. And even if you don't look at them, people can still send you Personal Messages.

Hell, even if you die, you're still here...

Never say never.

I did and that is why I am not here now

Ed it must still be better here that all those 'penis enlargment posts on uk.music.folk?.

Glad to see that this post and Jon's have not received the usual 'why make an announcement about your leaving' critics.

This I see as evidence that The Mudcat is maturing and will as consequence survive as still probably the best place on the whole Internet.

For it is the responsibility of those that remain, to ensure that no one feels they want to say goodbye to the good things, because of the not-so-good.

We are slowly learning that this can be easliy done by simply not reacting to those who only wish any reaction.

Mudcat is one of the great forums on the web not only to track down that hard to get song lyrics but also because of the range of topics it contains. Where else would you get for example the words to say "Killkelly" but also the thread about sectarianism on the same page.

I don't know why everyone seems to have all the negative stuff on their versions of Mudcat. Mine doesn't seem to include the ugly threads. I guess it must be because I just don't click on them, or if I do I click off right away. No Pain. Try it. It works.

Sorry you're both leaving. Could I humbly suggest you both just walk away for a while and then come back? Things change, the Mudcat changes daily. sometimes it's infuriating, sometimes it's the best thing since sliced bread. One thing it isn't is predicatable nor does it perform to order. That's part of why I like it.

I really do hope you both come back.

I tend to agree with both paddy(1) and McGrath and while I have thought that the Mudcat does tend to stray from the straight and narrow once in a while nobody is obliged to open threads that they have no interest in, so i would say to anyone thinking of leaving, you cant as Mcgrath says but take a break and try again, please

What's all this about? Guest(Paddy(1) and McGrath of Harlow have posted sensible replies above. Is Ed Pellow going to throw his computer out of the window because he gets SPAM in his email? Of course he isn't.! Would he like to 'moderate' the Mudcat threads? (Probably!) He is just being childish, wants to be noticed, wants people to say "we're so sorry to see you go" and too many have fallen into the trap of saying that. I constantly recommend the Mudcat to people seeking answers to folkie questions. It would only cease to be useful if all the music-oriented threads suddenly dried up, and that's not likely to happen. Therefore, I deem that Ed Pellow's own thread "I'm Leaving Mudcat" is a meaningless thread in its own right, except that it has allowed me and others to make a few points of marginal value.

Sigh! I spoke too soon.

"Therefore, I deem that Ed Pellow's own thread "I'm Leaving Mudcat" is a meaningless thread in its own right, except that it has allowed me and others to make a few points of marginal value."

Give the poor guy a break. There are many, far more meaningless threads and posts here . Threads and posts that do not add very much. If to you this is one of them, well then just ignore it.

Ed and Jon have both added much and do not really deserve such critism. If the thread allows folk to say goodbye, thanks and to wish them well, I would suggest the childishness lies somewhere else.

I am sorry to see them and anyone go.

It may be considered that I have fallen into a trap by doing this?

I consider that folk who criticise treads like these, have fallen into another.

Farewell Ed and thanks for your contribution. Your tune postings were invaluable to me.
Sorry Tweedie but this time I think you are wrong.
And to others, it's easy to say don't open the threads that don't interest you but even the music threads of late don't seem to be as easy going as they were a short while ago.
Thanks for taking the time to say goodbye Ed.

Shambles, you make Tweedie's point: it is perfectly easy to pick and choose which parts of the forum you go in to. And in case anyone else is mislead by Ed's post, it's worth noting that he and Jon are by no means as like-minded on this as Ed implies. Take a look at Jon's farewell, and it will be seen that he is leaving with good grace. I didn't sense similar good grace in Ed's post. For me, Tweedie's comments were right on the nail.

I'm with the Shambles (and apparantly the majority) on this one.  I'm sorry to see Ed leave, and I hope it turns out to be temporary.  Anyone who says blithely, "if you don't like a thread you don't have to open it", has obviously not spent hours dredging through the enormous archive of irrelevant, self-indulgent nonsense that bored people with nothing better to do insist on posting here, in order to find a useful answer to somebody's question about music...

What others could you suggest Mr. Douglas?

Tired of sanctimonious posting? Perhaps you have not followed the changes at this site?

Music is here as well as BS. It is the way the God wishes. Try to adjust if you can.

GUEST:  I dare say that I can adjust as well as you can, though I don't see any real changes here over the last few years beyond an occasional, temporary hike in silliness and, sometimes, cowardly, anonymous spite.  Some of the better-informed contributors have drifted away, and it's sad to see them go; but there will be others.   The discussion you mention was embarrassing, and I'd as soon go without such things, but at least it has now disappeared over the horizon.  As for sanctimony; well, you appear to be the local expert on that subject, so perhaps we can safely leave it to you.
