Not a good day for me yesterday, but someone loaned me this new album, and cheered me up no end. I had never heard any Patty Loveless before. This is really one of the best things I have heard in a long time -- old-fashioned hymns, Kentucky songs (You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive), all done with great skill. A bit like the recent Dolly Parton albums, but even better (with songs like "Cheap Whiskey" how can you lose?). If this is the roots revival, more!!!

yours, Peter T.

Yeah, I bought it last week - very impressed, it hasn't been out of the player.

I am quickly wearing this one out. The CD has everything from straight ahead bluegrass to bluegrass/roots-tinged country. I first heard Patty Loveless on a Ralph Stanley CD set and I was very impressed. BTW, Ralph himself in the liner notes says that she has the High Lonesome Sound. How's that for an endorsement?

Loveless has a marvelous bluegrass vocal technique and she can sell any song she sings. Listen to this CD a couple of times through and she'll draw you in like a siren. An additional feature of this album is that some of the tracks have *fine* bluegrass instrumental backup, including an amazing dobro solo on Shady Grove. One of the several dobro players on these tracks is Gene Wooten, who was a member of Jimmy Martin's group.

If you like the slick citified country/pop sound, then go elsewhere. If you want to hear an artist of great power who can put you right there in the hollers of East Kentucky looking for a way to a better life, Patty is the real deal.

Her version of Ralph's "Daniel Prayed" is a real standout. Funny, the only song of hers on this album that does nothing for me is the "Soul of Constant Sorrow" -- maybe I have heard it too much recently. She sort of oversings it. But the rest are fine. This album looks as if it is unlike what she usually sings. Anyone know if any of her other albums are any good, before I spend money on them?
yours, Peter T.

If you're discussing a new CD, please provide the record company name and the CD number. CAMSCO can supply anything that's in print, but this information could save me a lot of searching.

She's more known as a New Country artist. A pretty damn good one if you can stand the genre. I understand sheis in fact a real gal from the hollers.

EK85651. Epic Records/Jahaza. Produced by Emory Gordy, Jr. Looks like Sony Nashville is the distributor (at least they are on the barcode). yours, Peter T/

Yup, daddy was a coal-miner and she's the real deal.

As far as buying other albums, it's a toss-up. You have to like, and I mean really like, that polished '80s-'90s country sound. She's got at least one winner per album, not counting the songs that country radio beats to death, but there are a lot of albums. I guess you could start with her album 'Classics'- and if you like that sound, then you are assured more of the same on the others.
