Subject: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: Tweedie Date: 21 Jul 01 - 02:38 PM She's not listed at the Mudcat and her website www.caradillon.com isn't working today, so I'd just like to mention there is an 11-track CD from UK singer Cara Dillon. 8 tracks are traditional. Number: RTRADECD019. It has just been favourably reviewed by fRoots magazine. It is her first solo album I believe, and I'm just giving it a gentle plug. Hope that doesn't offend anyone. |

Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: dick greenhaus Date: 21 Jul 01 - 11:11 PM Hi- If folks praising new albums would include that recording company name, CAMSCO Music would have a much easier time of keeping up. And could peddle the CDs at a lower cost than you could get elsewhere (even in the UK). |

Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: Tweedie Date: 25 Jul 01 - 06:03 PM The record company is 'Rough Trade Records' of 66 Golborne Road, London W10 5PS, and I guess all their details are at www.roughtraderecords.com |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: GS Date: 26 Jul 01 - 02:21 PM Caras website is http://www.caradillon.co.uk and not .com as indicated on the back of her cd - that said theres not a great deal on there yet. http://www.members.aol.com/folkandroots/index.html |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: GUEST,Mac Tattie Date: 26 Jul 01 - 02:58 PM Cara's CD is indeed not too bad at all and well worth a listen, BUT, it realy should be much better. The arrangements don't allways compliment Cara's voice and " The Lark In The Clear Air " is out of place in this "hip, cool, laid back" recording. Her sister,Mary, can just be heard on some tracks, which is encourageing because Mary is by far the better singer and hopefuly we can look forward to a CD from her sometime soon. |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 27 Jul 01 - 06:15 AM Review of her concert in today's UK Guardian says it was shortened because of the high temperatures"! Obviously lacks Roll & Go's stamina! RtS |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: GS Date: 27 Jul 01 - 06:58 AM Hopefully the venue might take some notice and take some measures to cool things down a bit. That said I saw Mukka ( http://www.cathorseandtree.co.uk/mukka/index.htm ) at the same venue last nite and they managed to keep it up in pretty warm conditions for best part of 90 minutes, play a lot of Gyspy/Romanian tunes and well worth catching live if you can Wonder if theres anywhere round here I can nip out and buy Cara's Cd from hmmmmmmmm |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: dick greenhaus Date: 27 Jul 01 - 11:21 AM GS- I don't know where "round here" is, but you can order anything that's in print from CAMSCO (800/548-FOLK) |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: Tweedie Date: 28 Jul 01 - 07:06 PM Here's a thought. Are we being trained to accept an album as a good buy when it is maybe only 80-90% sound ? (Much in the same way that we accept that computer software will crash even though it cost us a fortune.) I hate it when an artist puts 'make-weight' or 'experimental' tracks on their album, and at worse case a single grotty track will cause me to rarely play that CD. I agree that Cara's The Lark In The Clear Air is out of place and should have been spotted as such, but fortunately it is an innocuous track and in my opinion doesn't spoil the album.
In support of my thesis I would cite Eliza Carthy (and even Nancy Kerr) for diluting albums with very samey-sounding fiddle instrumentals, the well-documented case of Maddy Prior's latest offering having make-weights tacked on to a Arthurian-themed beginning, and Kate Rusby's latest with some very weird happenings on the last track (including 2 minutes of silence.)
What do 'catters think?. (oh dear, I think maybe I have creeped my own thread [?] ) |
Subject: RE: New Trad CD - Cara Dillon From: GUEST,Mac Tattie Date: 29 Jul 01 - 11:55 AM Tweedie, my fear is we are being trained, or is that hoodwinked, into accepting albums that are only 10-20% sound. Far too often so so performers are given polite applause and faint praise when they realy should be tared and feathered, run out of town and surgicaly prevented from ever performing again. Too often the next big thing, isn't. Over the years I have been depressed, sadened and embarased by many "players" and "singers" who lay clame to the words TRADITIONAL or FOLK but have little, if any, understanding or fondness for the music. We live in times when singers can hear songs for the first time one day, be recording them the following week and releasing their "highly reveiwed" CDs within the month. Depresed? you bet I am, but every now and again allong comes something that hits the spot, brings a smile, makes it all better. |
