Live in Derry NH. No access to folk music in local stores. Looking for lyrics to Andrew Stewart's Man in the moon. Any clue where I can buy it?

Heather,

Try Elderly Instruments out of Lansing, Michgan, US. They carry a large selection of tapes & CDs in addition to their instrument lines, and they are a pretty reputable company. You can find them at: www.elderly.com

Their latest catalog shows that they carry 'Man in the Moon' by Andy M. Stewart. Perhaps it's the one you're looking for.

Good Luck! - Ian

My sweetheart's the man in the moon. I know I'll be seeing him soon It would fill me with bliss, just to give him one kiss, But I know that a thousand he never would miss.

I'll go up in a great big baloon, To see my sweetheart in the moon, And behind some dark cloud, where no one is allowed, I'll make love to the man in the moon.

I am trying to find a recording of James Thornton's song, "My Sweetheart's the Man in the Moon". I found a CD: Monarch's of Minstrelsy. Do you know of any others? It was a special song my Mom sang to me. Thank you

And read about the writer, James Thornton, having a bit of a scrape with the lawhere.

Of course he later wrote "When You Were Sweet Suixteen"

Here's a link to the pdf of the sheet music at the Levy collection: My Sweetheart's The Man In The Moon - pdf (right-click and do Save As... the file is about 6Mb). Alternatively, you can see the sheet music images online using this link to the cover and then the links to move through the pages: My Sweetheart's The Man In The Moon - cover page

If you search for the title on amazon.com, you will find several recordings (though they look mostly instrumental) and mp3 downloads, including one mp3 download referred to as sing-a-long with, so probably does have the vocal.

This is NOT the song that Andy M. Stewart recorded, but…

MY SWEETHEART'S THE MAN IN THE MOON was recorded by Kitten on the Keys (a.k.a. Suzanne Ramsey) on her album "(It's Not a) Pretty Princess Day," 2004.

Transcribed from the sheet music at the Levy collection:

MY SWEETHEART'S THE MAN IN THE MOON.
Words and music by James Thornton.
"Written for and sung by Bonnie Thornton, Tony Pastor's Theatre, New York."
London: Frank Harding, 1892.

VERSE 1. Ev'rybody has a sweetheart underneath the rose.
Ev'rybody loves a body, so the old song goes.
I've a sweetheart; you all know him just as well as me.
Ev'ry evening I can see him shortly after tea.

CHORUS 1: My sweetheart's the man in the moon.
I'm going to marry him soon.
'Twould fill me with bliss, just to give him one kiss,
But I know that a dozen I never would miss.
I'll go up in a great big balloon,
And see my sweetheart in the moon;
Then behind some dark cloud, where no one is allow'd,
I'll make love to the man in the moon.

VERSE 2. I have often wonder'd where he spends his time all day.
P'rhaps he has another sweetheart many miles away.
Maybe some sweet, dark hair'd maiden daily he does woo,
But as long as I don't catch him, I'll believe him true.

CHORUS 2: Last night while the stars brightly shone,
He told me through Love's Telephone,
That when we were wed, he'd go early to bed,
And never stay out with the boys, so he said.
We are going to marry next June.
The wedding takes place in the moon.
A sweet little Venus, we'll fondle between us,
When I wed my old man in the moon.

THE MAN IN THE MOON
Bill Dickson, Kathy Stewart
As sung by Andy M. Stewart on "Man in the Moon," 1994

I came from the land of the long grass and gorse.
I flew with the eagle and I ran with the horse.
And I played with the wild wind and whistled its tune.
I ebbed with the ocean and slept in the moon.

CHORUS: And you brought me down gently. You brought me down clean.
You fed me the summer. You fed me your dreams.
Your hands held the wound and heart healed the pain,
And your eyes stole the light of the moon as it waned.

We journeyed the moorlands and oceans of blue.
We slept with the dawn and we rose with the dew;
And we sang with the breezes of the year to be born.
We lay in the long grass when the scythe took the corn. CHORUS

I will fall with the leaves. I'll turn with the land.
I'll chill with the first frost that stings on your hand;
But I gathered the seeds from the gorse and the broom.
"I'll lay them forever," said the Man in the Moon. CHORUS
