Subject: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Jul 01 - 12:17 AM Look HERE! You can set your PC to play automatically through all the hymn MIDIs listed at CyberHymnal. I also discovered today that with Noteworthy Composer, you can not only read the MIDI scores there, you can save and then transpose and/or edit them for your own adaptation. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Jul 01 - 12:44 AM You set the length of time you want the successive selections to play. I suppose one could drive co-workers or family mad with endless replayes. Or learn a new melody while you do dishes. Your call. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Jul 01 - 02:12 PM Midis of 2,900 variegated hymns played in random order. A slightly terrifying prospect.
One interesting thing is the way it shows that "the right tune" for particular hymns varies widely. At least they do across the Atlantic. Never assume that when someone says "it's to the same tune as XYZ" you actually both have the same tune in mind. |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Jul 01 - 02:56 PM That's what the cross-referenced CyberHymnal indexes are for, of tunes by name or meter. As in most USA hymnals with which I am familiar, these indexes let you see the options for matching tunes and words. Simply soaking up the music (as just the tunes) in the background actually enhances this possiblility... you start to think, "What a pretty tune, what are the words?" Then you might be surprised by the words and think, "Gee, that's not at all what I thought that music would have been about...." So you look up the tune itself and see the other lyric possibilities. The alternate versions also are generally referenced in each hymn's own page. They are pretty careful to enter things as found in the earliest printed sources available, and there is a provision for spotting errors if an earlier version or deeper level of scholarship should turn up. It's not so different from our own differing versions here at Mudcat where some would swear they know the straight gospel on what the OFFICIAL or original version of a trad piece may be... the same expertise and variance of experience at CH as we have here. Minus the forum to discuss it... but then for that we have our own Mudcat. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: Burke Date: 22 Jul 01 - 04:10 PM McGrath, the tunes aren't even the same when we go from one denomination to another in the US. |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Jul 01 - 04:53 PM Well, I looked up Faith of Our Fathers, so I doubt if that problem would have arisen in that case... |

Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Jul 01 - 10:11 AM McGrath, here is the ideal opportunity to use CH and Mudcat synergistically... by laying out a thread here (with the right links to CH material) discussing the differences you are thinking about. When the thread is nicely browned, we can send a link to it to the CH folks for their continuing edification. Be sure to also include, if and when sending them the link, a codgerly pic of yourself (just kidding) so they will know you are one of the great masters. Amos, they are looking for pix of the missing masters over at CH; I think I will pick a good name off their wish list and send in yours for it. Any preferences or shall I go ahead and choose? ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: mousethief Date: 23 Jul 01 - 12:40 PM That's why the tunes have names too. When you say "ton y botel" (or however that's spelt) you mean the same aire as I do; whether you sing "O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus" to that tune, or "Who is this, so weak and helpless" or "Great and deep, the Spirit's purpose" to it -- or whichever of a gazillion (or maybe fewer) sets of words can be sung to that tune. Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Jul 01 - 01:09 PM I just found a new one too, where new (to me) words were played to a tune I know and love. I would not have discovered that, since I had not gone looking, unless I had been Autoplaying. Wouldn't it be great if DT could Autoplay too? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: nutty Date: 30 Aug 01 - 07:06 PM I downloaded a program called Crescendo which , while it doesn't autoplay , will loop and play a tune over and over until you stop it . Great if you want to concentrate on the words of a song |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: GUEST,David Date: 13 May 10 - 06:55 PM where is the autoplay feature for goodness sake? why is it so complicated now? |
Subject: RE: Wow! You Can AUTOPLAY the CyberHymnal! From: Joe Offer Date: 13 May 10 - 07:05 PM Oh, it gets worse than that, David. The original Cyber Hymnal™ (established 1996) lost its URL, which was cyberhymnal.org - it now redirects to nethymnal.org, which is more-or-less an exactly pirated copy of Cyber Hymnal™, but with ads. A pretty insidious switcheroo, I'd say. The original Cyber Hymnal™ is now at http://www.hymntime.com/tch/ - you'll see an "autoplay" option on the home page of the Website. Personally, I hate Websites that play MIDI files or other sounds without asking my permission first. -Joe- |
