Does anyone know the origins of a song entitled, or with the chorus, "He's been a long time gone for the wood". All suggestions gratefully received.

Ray Padgett (Barnsley) collected a version.
It's not very old.(1904) I have the sheet music somewhere. It's in Francis Day and Hunter's Album of Famous Old Songs Vol2
Kilgarriff gives its proper title as 'He's been a long time gorn'
Written and composed by Robert P Weston 1878-1936 sung by Stewart Morton

Would someone be able to post the lyrics to 'He's been a long time gorn' please?

My mum asked me if I could find them because when she was young someone used to sing it to her, but she can't remember it all now. It's her age. LOL! :D If anybody knows of somewhere I might be able to buy or download a copy too that would really make her day!

Many thanks in advance

It's getting late and if I start scrabbling about I'll wake the missus up. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow then if you let me have your email I'll try to scan the sheet music and send you it. My email address is on the Yorkshire garland website.

Here goes:-
In the key of Eb as sung by Stewart Morton.

1 Here's a tale that the Wild west settlers tell:
Young Jim Brown was a ne'er-do-well;
Old man Brown sent him out, they say,
To get some sticks in the woods one day.
Jim didn't go for the sticks, not he!
he went away right across the sea.
old man Brown by his cabin stood,
And said as he gazed out in the wood,

'He's been a long time gorn foh de wood,
He's been a long time gorn!
He's peltin' de 'possums in de gum-trees dere,
or else havin' trouble wid a grizzly bear.
Won't I wallop him! I guess he'd wish he'd never been born!'
But he prays that night, that his boy's all right
although a long time gorn.

2. Now, the years rolled away, but the old man there
Waited still, he would not despair.
he believed that his wayward lad would bring those sticks,
and they called him mad.
He'd holler out when they passed by him,
'Say! Hev yer seen my boy, my Jim?
he went off quite a while ago.
But say, hev yer seen him? Doan say no!'

He's been a long time gorn foh de wood, he's been a long time gorn!
He's only a little un, a boy, dat's all;
Now doan say yer reckon dat by now he's tall.
Doan yew tell me dat he's dead, he lef' me here forlorn;
But he ain't dead no! and he'll come back,
Though he's been a long time gorn.

3rd verse later.

I can see you've all been waiting with baited breath to see what happened. Naaaa!

3. 'Twas the talk of the place when a man, well-dressed,
Came one night to that town out West,
(He drove the fastest milk-cart in the West...oops sorry about that)
Folks all laughed, 'cause up on his back
He'd sticks like a walking timber-stack.
Soon at a window he shouted, 'Dad!
I've brought de wood home, ain't yer glad?'
Old man Brown stood and gazed a-while,
and said with a smile, a weary smile,

'You've been a long time gorn foh de wood, you've been a long time gorn!
But, yes! Take de bundle to de lumber shed,
What say? Whar's yer mammy? Wal, de parson said
On dat mornin' when she died I warn't to weep nor mourn,
Kase in heav'n he knew she would look for you!
You've been a long time gorn!'

They don't write 'em like that any more! (Phew!)
This last half verse is ripe for a parody. Anybody got any suggestions as to a finish?

Apparently, my father between the wars used to sing this to the family. Does anyone have the music to it?
