MMario is treating me very well and no I don't feel like you pushed me over on him. All you guys have been great and I very happy I stumbled on to you.

In that old book there was a song my dad would sing when I was a little girl. Unfortunately it too is torn out, the song is entitled "O'Reilly the Fisherman" Is that familiar to anyone?

Michelle, I don't know enough about the song to know the place names. The editors of Songs of the Miramachi tried to write the words down as they were sung so there are probably many variants. I think Mr. Murphy is a trasure to have remembered this song and he should keep singing it the way he remembers it.

Thanks for all your work.

From: GUEST
Date: 08 Aug 01 - 08:07 AM

THE CASTLEBAR BOY

I am a boy from ould Ireland,
Where good nature and morn shines on every face;
And the pride of my father, And the girl’s own joy,
And the darlings they call me the Castlebar boy

Chorus:
For my name it is Pat,
I'm proud of that,
My country I will never deny;
I will fight for the sod
Where my forefathers trod,
Sing hurrah for the Castlebar boy.

I was born one evening, in the middle of June,
They took me into town And they christened me soon;
What name shall we call him? says Father Molloy,
Monnadowl, call him Paddy, The Castlebar boy. -Chorus

When I landed in England It was a beautiful morning,
They gave me a job at reaping the corn;
At reaping and mowing to beat me they tried, But the Omahauns,
They could not touch the Castlebar boy. -Chorus

You Englishmen, poor Paddy don't scorn,
For Paddy was not always a big Omahaun;
For his heart is in the right place, For a friend he would die;
I think I have pleased you, the best I did try.
Grant your applause to the Castlebar boy-Chorus

The guy I heard singing The Irish Rebel Spy is a very well-known Newfoundland Baratone singer...He sang on TV Shows here in the 60's, All Around the Circle was one...a bit before my time...I was in diapers then. Lou Murphy is his name from St. John's. He says the way her heard the song the first line was In the city of the echoe in the County of Tyrone...he told me to ask you if that might be a different variation of that song or a mistake. He isn't into the internet.

Oooooh!!! What a treasure trove! Seriously, Michelle, the folks at the Irish Traditional Music Archive itma would probably be interested in this. Thanks for taking the time to compile the list and post it here. As Brían says there are some well known songs, but others look quite rare. I wonder if The Holly and Ivy Girl is a Parnellite ballad?

That's O.K., maybe Mudelf will come by and fix the line breaks which you can learn about in the FAQ's athe the top of the page. Look for HTML. That looks like you have a real nice book. If I had it I am sure I would be learning some songs from it. Some of them, THE COUNTY MAYO, PASTHEEN FION,and CROOSKEEN LAWN appear to be translations from gaelic. I have seen variants of many of these. THE CASTLEBAR BOY and THE "HOLLY AND IVY" GIRL look very interesting. I don't know how much you want to do, but I think ther are folks here who would be very interested in some of these songs.

I was wondering if your friend who sang THE IRISH REBEL SPY would be interested in corresponding. I would love to hear some good regional music if he was interested.

Who is this song about? The only reference in it that I recognise is "Jim Stevens", presumably meaning James Stephens(1824-1901) who co-founded the Irish republican Brotherhood (the Fenians) in Dublin on March 17 1858.

I do have a scanner if there is something there you would like to have. I'm off to cover a Concert for the newspaper...I will post some of the titles when I get past my deadline in 2 days.

Michelle, I live in Portland, Maine. A day's drive from NB. MMario has a point. if there are any interesting songs, maybe you could share them with us or your local folklore society. As you can see, songs are often "lost". Of course curating a book that could easily date back to the turn of the century or earlier is something you should look in to.

I recall that trip to NB as being inspirational for me. We met some folks in Newcastle who sang PETER EMBERLY, THE MERMAID, some other logging songs, they had also composed a ceilí dance for the occasion. They had some good dancers and fine fiddlers, French, Irish and Scotch. I met someone on the bus we came up with who had some fine songs in Irish and in English which I have since learned. At the time my songs were SPANCIL HILL(not Robbie Mc Mahon's version he got from Michael Considine), ON RAGLAN ROAD, FROM CLARE TO HERE,songs which are fine, but not particularly traditional.

We met the band Déanta at the festival and were able to sit in with a séissiún with them(I recall sitting with my bow in the air watching them tear through what seemed to be 100's of Donegal reels and jigs. I remember being treated with respect and given encouragement to play a tune which I remember to be SÍ BEAG AUGUS SÍ MÓR.

I have a friend who is a fisherman who grew up on Shirkin Island off the coast of Ireland. He told me on his trips to Newfoundland that he seemed to blend in very well with both the music and the dialect.

Interesting indeed that you found it in NB, because that is where this guy heard it in the 60's when he visiting there.

Oh yes, Irish music is very much a part of Newfoundland, much more so now than ever. They still even talk like the Irish here.

I don't know what information Joe sent when he e-mailed you, but I did indicate the source in my original posting above.(which I try to do where possible) I picked up a folk song book, Songs of the Miramachi(a terrible addiction I know) at an Irish Festival in N.B. while I was visiting St. John.

It appears to be a Fenian song written after the Famine, but before the Easter Rising. Many of these were printed on ballad sheets to known melodies and used to raise sympathy for the cause.

I am pleased to be of help. I am glad to see that a singing tradition is still alive in Newfoundland.

I was at a traditional Newfoundland Kitchen Party last week and this guy, in his late sixties, who was once a singer on a CBC program(in the 60's) sang a portion of this song. He said he couldn never recall the last three verses and would love to know them. He asked me if I could find it for him or if I knew someone who might know it. I am a journalist and I think he might have thought I would have some connections. I do however love a challenge and I knew this song was going to be a challenge since his niece had even done some researching when she was in Ireland and had come up empty. You my friend...I thank. I called him today and he is quite pleased. Now tell me where do you get all your information to? Always the curious mind. Michelle

Here is a version from Songs of Miramachi (LOuise Manny and James Reginald Wilson). there are probably some errors as it is written as transcribed from the singer.Leone is probably Athlone. Mialco is probably Mulingar, but don't bet on it. The singer is John A. Gilks of Southesk

THE IRISH REBEL SPY

In the city of Mialco near the county of Leone
There lived a comely maiden, her skin as white as snow,
Her cheeks were like the roses, with a dark and rolling eye,
And the proper name she goes by is the Irish Rebel Spy.

She's got one only brother that se worshipped in her soul,
She had one only true love she loved beyond control,
They were Fenian little leaders and before her they would die,
She's our little Fenian leader, she's the Irish Rebel Spy.

She's as bold as any lion, she's as supple as a deer,
She's hardier than the wild cat or the hardy mountain steer
And she's often slept on hillsides with no covering but the sky,
And the proper name she goes by is the Irish Rebel Spy.

O those perils and those redcoats and those spys a-hunting came,
One day as she was walking across the fields they came,
She knew they wer detectives by a twinkle of her eye,
And determined to outwit them was the Irish Rebel Spy.

"O good morning, O good morning, O good morning, sir" said she,
"I've a letter for your brother Jim Stevens sent by me,
"Tell me where those bears are lying." They are lying snug and dry
In a hollow where they're dwelling," said the Irish Rebel Spy.

She wrapped her cloak around her, and she led them on the way,
And as they followed after her, she led them far astray,
She talked them to destruction, and she winked at them so sly,
Till one slipped from the saddle for to kiss that Rebel Spy.

Like a wizard in the saddle< O this fair one she could fly,
Like old Nimrod in his farmer days, this fair one she could ride,
Over hills and fences, O this fair one she did fly,
Until she reached those heroes and she halted by their side.

"Hurry up, boys, they re coming, they are just beyond the hill,
And as the ground should open up and swallow them as they fled,
They baffled at the Irish with their curses long and sly,
But determined to outwit them was the Irish Rebel Spy.

Now she sleeps in old Ireland with no stone to mark the spot,
But her name for us in Ireland will never be forgot,
Her name and fame will cherry us until the day we die,
She's our little fenian leader, she's the Irish Rebel Spy.
^^
Slán go fóill,
Brían.

If you know anything of the rough date of the song, that would be a great help also. Thanks in advance, and hoping that somebody will come up with what you are looking for.
