The editors of Songs of the Miramachi tried to write the words down as they were sung so there are probably many variants. Lou Murphy is his name from St. John's. He says the way her heard the song the first line was In the city of the echoe in the County of Tyrone...he told me to ask you if that might be a different variation of that song or a mistake. He isn't into the internet. |

Look for HTML. That looks like you have a real nice book. If I had it I am sure I would be learning some songs from it. Some of them, THE COUNTY MAYO, PASTHEEN FION,and CROOSKEEN LAWN appear to be translations from gaelic. I have seen variants of many of these. THE CASTLEBAR BOY and THE "HOLLY AND IVY" GIRL look very interesting. I don't know how much you want to do, but I think ther are folks here who would be very interested in some of these songs. I was wondering if your friend who sang THE IRISH REBEL SPY would be interested in corresponding. I would love to hear some good regional music if he was interested. Brían. |

We met some folks in Newcastle who sang PETER EMBERLY, THE MERMAID, some other logging songs, they had also composed a ceilí dance for the occasion. They had some good dancers and fine fiddlers, French, Irish and Scotch. I met someone on the bus we came up with who had some fine songs in Irish and in English which I have since learned. At the time my songs were SPANCIL HILL(not Robbie Mc Mahon's version he got from Michael Considine), ON RAGLAN ROAD, FROM CLARE TO HERE,songs which are fine, but not particularly traditional. We met the band Déanta at the festival and were able to sit in with a séissiún with them(I recall sitting with my bow in the air watching them tear through what seemed to be 100's of Donegal reels and jigs. I remember being treated with respect and given encouragement to play a tune which I remember to be SÍ BEAG AUGUS SÍ MÓR. I have a friend who is a fisherman who grew up on Shirkin Island off the coast of Ireland. He told me on his trips to Newfoundland that he seemed to blend in very well with both the music and the dialect. Brían. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Irish Rebel Spy From: Brían Date: 01 Aug 01 - 11:58 PM I don't know what information Joe sent when he e-mailed you, but I did indicate the source in my original posting above.(which I try to do where possible) I picked up a folk song book, Songs of the Miramachi(a terrible addiction I know) at an Irish Festival in N.B. while I was visiting St. John. It appears to be a Fenian song written after the Famine, but before the Easter Rising. Many of these were printed on ballad sheets to known melodies and used to raise sympathy for the cause. I am pleased to be of help. I am glad to see that a singing tradition is still alive in Newfoundland. Brían. |

He said he couldn never recall the last three verses and would love to know them. He asked me if I could find it for him or if I knew someone who might know it. I am a journalist and I think he might have thought I would have some connections. I do however love a challenge and I knew this song was going to be a challenge since his niece had even done some researching when she was in Ireland and had come up empty. You my friend...I thank.
