I have this record, from a little over a year ago:

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: nobody knows you when you're down and out
From: Gary T
Date: 28-Apr-00 - 08:22 AM

Verse:
C E7 A7 -
Dm A7 Dm -
F B7 C A7
D7 - G7 -
Bridge (Nobody knows you...)
C - A7 -
Dm A7 Dm -
F B7 C A7
D7 - G7 -
Ending (last lines):
D7 - G7 -
C A7 D7 G7 C

---
I think it works better if you play the E7 after the C in the Bridge--also, the B7 is a substitute for the an F#dim--which gives you a half-step movement in the bass--

DaveO is right--that E7 should be there. The part I called a bridge is really just another verse.

Coincidentally, this song is done by Johnny Silvo on Sandy & Johnny (1967), just mentioned in another thread.

I believe it was originally done by Bessie Smith. I mean I know fer sure she did it, but I don't know for sure she was the original, but I'd bet on it. One of my very favorite songs. I have it by her on CD. I also have it by Eric Clapton.

Love, annamill

And just to put a final touch on things:

For the verse, add one more A7 --

C, E7, A7
F, A7, Dm-A7-Dm. The last three chords are for "I didn't care", one for each word.

This is a great song that used to be warbled and embellished by many benighted singers in the '60s. It wasn't until I heard the Bessie Smith original, where she sings it absolutely straight-ahead, often holding one note while those ragtime chords change underneath, that I fell in love with the tune.

Weeell, I gotta work on my speed
No answers here when I went to look, and now you guys done it all.
Just 'cause I did find some provenance that isn't cited in any of the above, I'm gonna past it anyhow, as a "fair use" for discussion of chord/key variations.

Error Number 1: Failed to realize that / is one of those that has to be coded.
Error Number 2: Tried to look at it in my html viewer to see what was wrong, and it trashed the line return codes.
If this don't work, I'll go home and practice... a lot.
Apologies for sending trash.
