Is anybody interested in a gathering to play some tunes, sing some songs, and get acquainted?

Place: chez nous (CET and Charmion) in the Lowertown area of Ottawa. (close to the Byward Market)

Date: Saturday, 18 August 2001 (the weekend before the Ottawa Folk Festival).

Time: starting afternoonish and ending when people feel like leaving

Willie-O and Marion have expressed interest.

We have space for a few out of towners who don't mind cats.

Holding this event will depend on gathering at least a few people who are interested. If it doesn't work for the 18th, I'll try for a more propitious date.

Well, I have one jam buddy in the city who I'll invite along, but are you really going to uninvite us if there's not enough of us? I think two or three people can make a fine jam.

I would say that it's quality that counts, not quantity, but that line of reasoning might get me uninvited too...:)

Cheers, Marion

Marion:

You're right of course. Quality does count, so you are not uninvited. Look forward to seeing you and your jam buddy (and anybody else you care to bring) on the 18th.

Tom and I will be there in spirit, but I'm afraid our bodies will be stuck in New Hampshire. Hope we can get up to see you sometime!

You are always welcome. No need for a special event, just let us know when you'd like to come.

We are now back from the Goderich Celtic College and Celtic Roots Festival with a bunch of new songs. Charmion also has a beautiful new steel string guitar. We are looking forward to seeing people at our place on Saturday. The festivities will kick off about 3 p.m. (Charmion has appointments before then), but if you want to come earlier, don't be shy. I will be in all day. PM me if you need details on how to get to our place.

How far is Ottawa from the Pacific Northwest?

Yikes! I just looked it up and I'm afraid that'll be too much of a drive to take in.

Guest Ghost: If you set out right now, you'll be just in time, and you'll have a wonderful new tale with which to amuse your friends and impress strangers. So pull pole and get moving!

Edmund (CET) is the artistic director of this marriage; I am the Logistics Queen. Hence, I am here to talk about food, drink and flops for them what come from away.

First, the address (again): 570 Old Saint Patrick Street, Ottawa. Phone number: (613) 562-4686.

Drink: Beer (good, tasty beer that meets the demanding quality standards of the house) will be available to all who care to partake thereof, and I shall lay in plenty of pop, both sugared and sugar-free. It will probably be hot, so lots of ice will be on hand.

Food: The barbecue will be up and running, with po'k ribs and various sausages (real [i.e., not French's] mustard and buns also laid on). Contributions of other items would be most welcome.

Flops: If you are travelling far, or you find yourself exhausted or otherwise in a state in which it would be unwise to drive, we have sleeping space for a few people who don't have a problem with cats who might join them in the night.

I am looking forward to trying out my new Peter Cox guitar with a fiddle, whistle or squeeze-box; I think it may be the sweetest, mellowest-sounding steel-string guitar I've ever tried, and I want to find out how it sounds in an ensemble, however impromptu. Oh, and if there are any piano-players out there, we have an old Heintzman (yes, it's in tune) that could use a work-out.

Let joy be unconfined!

Charmion

I'll be thinking of you guys up north as I swelter through my final weekend of ren-faire. My folks are in Ottowa this week - flying back in from Baffin Island on Thursday. So if you see a couple of eccentric US octogenarians - it's probably them.

I'm definitely planning on attending!

Charmion, I'm looking forward to meeting you and Edmund, and right after that, to admiring your new guitar. I have one of Peter's mandolas, a lovely little player's special which has been getting better and better over the 7-8 years I've had it. I'll bring it. I've never seen any of his guitars. He's a hell of a nice guy eh?

So let me see, that address is east of King Edward, right? (and thereby hangs a short tale from my taxi-driving days)...

I'm planning on following up Saturday by having a birthday party for myself at home in McDonalds Corners on Sunday evening. So the party hard will know where to come to!

Bill

East of King Edward Avenue, yes! West of Cobourg Street, yes! In fact, the most efficient approach from the west is by King Edward to the Murray Street turn-off to the St. Patrick Street Bridge; then take the first right turn (Beausoleil Drive) to the first left turn (Old St. Patrick). Look for St. Anne's Church and keep going another half block. We're on the south side of the street.

For those approaching from the east, take the Vanier Parkway to Beechwood, turn left over the St. Patrick Street Bridge, then take the first left (Cobourg Street) and the first right -- Old Saint Patrick.

OK I'll tell the story since nobody asked. It ties in nicely with your directions there.

Old St. Patrick Street used to be St Patrick St. until they boulevardized it in the 70's, doglegging the new wider boulevard so it runs parallel and to the north of what became Old St. Patrick Street. Old St Patrick is not connected to the intersection of St Patrick and King Edward, it's a dead end separated from King Edward Ave by a couple of curbs and a median.

Around 1980 when this was a fairly new arrangement I was driving cab in the city. There was a driver who was one of the dispatcher's kids, a really obnoxious twerp whom I couldn't stand. I don't remember specifics of why, just that it gave me great satisfaction one night when I drove past that intersection one very rainy night and saw him completely stuck in the mud and spinning his wheels like an idiot, because he'd tried, in a thunderstorm, to drive his car over the curb and the median to take a shortcut onto (or off of, I forget) Old Saint Patrick.

So take my advice, follow Charmion's directions above. Take the street not the curb.

This thread has been unjustifiably lost in the 7-day history.

We got together at Edmond & Charmion's yesterday and had a grand time. Drove in with Marion, and my daughter Emily came along. Had a swell time swapping songs and tunes with the hosts, Rich M and Sue, my neighbour Gary who I had invited unbeknownst to Ed & Charmion, Caroline Parry and a couple of other folks.

Thread refreshed. I now have to go back to preparing for my birthday party tonight...say Edmund, I may not have been forceful enough in my attempts to invite you and C. to this evening's event. 6 p.m., we're only an hour away you know...any chance?

Willie-O, we would definitely like to be there. It'll be a great party. Unfortunately, we have guests coming over today. However, as you say you're only an hour away and we intend to get out your way to do some more music before too long. We enjoyed listening to your CD this morning. Thanks for bringing your daughter Emily and your friend Gary.

Yesterday's party was a great success thanks to our guests. Willie-O's friend Gary was the first to show up, and every body else arrived before 4 p.m. The party went on till about 10 p.m. with a break for supper - lots of singing and some stellar guitar playing from Willie-O, Rich M and Gary. Sue M brought her stand up bass. Marion contributed some great tunes on her fiddle. We got a chance to explain the Mudcat to the non-Catters. As always with good parties, it was over too soon. I wanted it to go on - oh, well all the more reason to do it again.

Merci beaucoup indeed CET and Charmion. Pity you can't make it tonight, but let me know if you do make it to the neighbourhood and I'll invite myself too.

I'll be there at MC tonight - even thought of something to bring as a present!

Yup, my birthday party was a HELL of a lot of fun, too. (A lot more crowded and noisy than your place.) I don't have one every year but this is 45. (the old 45).

So I am pretty stunndified now...if ya know what I mean. I could maybe get used to this music-every-night thing, but now its back to the working grind...see ya later on.

It was a lot of fun sharing songs and tunes. Thanks CET and Charmion for hosting the get together. It was nice to have the variety of music from the participants. Bill tell Gary I particularly liked his Rideau Ferry Pirate song (ARRRR)
