'Mudge and I (Jeri, too) went to the Roll & Go concert at the Wells, ME Historical Society last night. What fun! Oh sure, it could have been better if we'd have had blocks of ice to sit on or if the flexiglassed shut windows could have been opened to let in some outside air into the historic building (the original was burned by Indians in 1692), but watching, listening and joining our voices with this professional, well-organized and polished (but relaxed) group on stage was a joy. I really want to know how they all managed to not sweat as much as the audience, despite an interior temperature close to 100!

They know their material well, tie it into local maritime history and educate their listeners in a highly entertaining way, interacting with even the youngest listeners (who even got a pre-concert lesson in playing bones). Their retertoire is diverse and includes not only songs and shanties most people are familiar with, but less well known material and great humor as well.

The group's members are comfortable with themselves and relaxed with the audience and it shows. The concert went by too quickly despite the heat -- we focussed on their performance and not the temperature and our own discomfort.

Good show, guys! And everybody else, catch them if you can!

(No, Naemanson and Charley did NOT pay me to write this!)

I have had the pleasure of seeing bits and pieces of the group perform (including the rubber squid). Bat Goddess has nailed it. Professional and polished with a sense of great affection and respect for their material and they enjoy themselves. Bet I know who gave the "bones" lessons.

So they were to cheap to chip in on the bribe money with the rest of the group? (JOKE!)

some day I am going to get to hear these guys....

Jeez, I sound like an afterthought! ("Jeri too") ;-)

It was great to see all of Roll & Go sing together. They have a great bunch of songs, and the harmonies blended wonderfully.

Warning - if you bring children and sit in the front row, they will get Special Attention from Naemanson. Before the concert, a whole bunch of Cub Scouts got a free lesson on how to play bones. He also finally got them singing - well, I saw their lips moving anyway!

They also invited the three of us up on stage for the last number. Now THAT was a surprise, and an honor. Thanks, guys - great concert!

What a nice thread to patch into the morning after!

We certainly had a great audience, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of them were back for the second set, and had not expired at the end of it because of the heat. One of the joys of working with the hall is we can power it with our voices alone. We were working with a family audience, lots of senior citizens, about a dozen children under 12, and a strong nautical chorus contingent from over the southern border. Naemanson's voice was in fine form in spite of the abuse it suffered at that notorious Portsmouth dive last Friday; Brett, with myself in support, are planning a return engagement this Friday at the Press Room. We'll see if we can dislodge the remaining ceiling tiles. What joy!

Roll & Go's next concert is this Saturday, 7:30 PM, at The Chocolate Church in Bath, along with Castlebay: call 207-729-3185 for information, reservations or fine catering.

Jeri! You're not an afterthought! (Even though you were riding in the back seat.) And it was the first time Tom and I had seen & heard the whole group together.

I forgot to mention the wonderful acoustics and effectively designed stage area at the Wells Historical Society. Roll & Go was fortunate to be able to dispense with a sound system (and hot lighting on the stage!) and be much more in touch with the audience -- always a definite plus and something I know I prefer when I'm performing.

I REALLY covet that psychodelic rubber squid! Me, with the largest collection of rubber squid in the state of New Hampshire (ah, well, it's probably the ONLY collection of rubber squid in the state of New Hampshire) and I don't have anything to compare with it. Yet another reason to head to the Maritimes!

Thanks for the sweet report. We had a great time. The kids were fun and it was easy to get them interested once I started with the bones. It's funny to see the amazement in their faces when they hear what can be done with two curved sticks. I had my extra sets of bones and let them each try to play along. I wish we had brought along the Foo-foo Band for the kids to use.

It was great to see the Mudcat row and hear them kick into the songs. I was unsure about dragging them up on stage but I guess I needn't have been. Thanks to Jeri, Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon for joining in the fun.

The owner of the Lighthouse Depot in Wells has expressed an interest in hiring us to do a program for them so we may yet again be playing down near the New Hampster border.

BG and others too shy to request such information over the Net, the ultimate source for such "squigglies" is the town of Shelburne in Nova Scotia. Look for a deep-sea fishing shop on the main drag, and there you'll find these lovely 10 inch fellows nestled in their cardboard cylinders, available in several vibrant colors to coordinate with your evening wear. Their ostensive purpose is for mounting on tuna trolling jigs, but who knows what they're really used for?

Congratulations, Roll & Go! Sounds like you put on a good show. I was there in spirit - did no one notice the apparition in the back of the room with the two canes?

Radrinao, thanks, but after two sets of robust singing in 90 plus heat I was seeing too many apparitions to pick yours out. Were you the one next to the mermaid with the beguiling smile?

Please note: The title of this thread does not necessarily refer to Roll & Go as being "hot" in the sense that we have ability, style, and energy. Rather, Bat Goddess is refering to the heat in the church last night.

Today, with the new weather front, Roll & Go is cool!

Way cool and now I think my tongue is stuck permanently in my cheek (shut up!). I was sure of the ability and style and I'm impressed that you all had any energy at all in what must have been well over 90 degrees and prolly into the triple digits last night. (We were all seeing apparitions -- tall iced drinks, diving nude into a tub of ice cold Mercury dimes, etcet, etcet. I think I saw that mermaid, too!)

So maybe you should have done more whaling songs about battling the briney cold and the freezing spray and not having any hardweather gear cuz you left all your money ashore and the sails and tackle stiff with ice and Jamaica rum (if you had any) freezing and cold hearted captains and first mates and, and...(you get the drift).

Yes, maybe we should have gone with the floe, maybe dredged up a verse or two about ye olde Titanic, and maybe Barry's one about them sealers marooned on the drifting ice. Of couse, if we tried to sing all those songs we'd still be there singing, and probably only to the Wells-Ogunquit Hysterical Society ghosts.

Marc, and anyone else who's interested, consider coming up this way the weekend of 8/3 to 8/5 for the Maine Festival at Thomas Point Beach in Brunswick. We'll be doing two sets on Friday and Saturday, another set on Sunday, in the Traditions Tent, and looking around for friends to swap songs with in between. It's also a great camp site, there's a microbrew tent, and an awesome variety of foods. And, of course, Roll & Go is not the only entertainment available. Hey Tyler, Welcome back!

We have another gig in Wells later on in the fall but I believe it is a private gig. Keep your eye on the What's On thread. I try to keep it up to date with Roll & Go news.

Apparently we left no surivivors at our concert at the Chocolate Church last night, at least none that have energy left to report; maybe Turtle will provide an objective report. However, I know there are some folks out there in Mudcatland that are eager for any crumbs so I'll unabashedly shovel out some of my own.

I have this curious recurring vision of working my way through the tragic tale of the sinking of the Kasii Maru (do your own thread search for "Cowardly Act" ;-)) with this stuffed cow being hurled back and forth between members of the audiance and members of my band. Have they no shame? Well, I guess you had to have been there...Which reminds me that our next appearance (unless we're banned) will be next weekend at the Maine Festival(www.mainearts.org), two sets Friday and Saturday, and another on Sunday, with hardly a song repeated although we do respond positively to physical threats of violence.

We really had a great audiance last night, about 40, in a small hall, no sound system to mess with, and we also had a lot of fun enjoying Castlebay's half of the concert. Fred Gosbie and Julia Lane write some beautiful ballads, as well as some enormously funny ones. Fred got to introduce us to his new Appolonio 12-string guitar and we also got to admire the harp that Fred made for Julia. Naemonsoon was still in good voice in spite of blatant attempts at The Press Room to provoke him to further vocal acrobatics (happy birthday, Brett, by the way if you've not too modest to read this). Norris stunned most of us with his "Lenore/Forevermore" alternative verse (suggested by Jeri) in "All for Me Grog." Jennifer and Eli did a lovely rendition of "Shallow Brown" and I even got to sing about the dismasting of the tall ship Lady Washington by that imfamous railroad bridge. It's rare that we get an audiance so willing to sing along but maybe it helps to throw out an occasional stuffed cow or rubber squid. Lovely memories!;-)

At the risk of endangering the innocent, I'm refreshing this thread in the hopes of luring more folks to the Maine Festival(see above)in Brunswick, ME, this weekend where we'll be singing our little hearts out.

Refreshing for one last time, before we a torn apart this week-end by thousands, hundreds, well, may be one or two groupies at the lovely Maine Festival. I've just stopped by the fair site to set up my tent and this will be my last communications with Mudcat World until Monday, if there is a Monday...
