Subject: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: late 'n short 2 Date: 26 Jul 01 - 10:36 AM Fans of either or both of these gents might like to know (if you already don't!) that they'll be touring together in Canada and the US in the Fall. For Eric's perspective on this, look here. The specific dates and locations are here. Dan |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: karen k Date: 26 Jul 01 - 11:52 AM Wow! Eric Bogle in New Britain, CT on Nov. 3rd. That's where I live! Hope this is really true. Can't wait to find out where. Have already marked it on my calendar. Don't know anything about John McDermott but if Eric is touring with him then that's good enough for me. Have seen Eric several times and I would drive a great distance to see him. Wow! Eric Bogle in New Britain. Don't miss them if they come anywhere near you. You'll be glad you took the chance. |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: Kim C Date: 26 Jul 01 - 12:20 PM Mister and I went to see John McDermott with the Nashville Symphony last year, and he was great. A little schmaltzy, but great. |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: GUEST,kendall Date: 26 Jul 01 - 01:32 PM So, who is John McDermott? |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: Bob P Date: 26 Jul 01 - 03:00 PM John is one of the "Three Irish Tenors" that were omnipresent on PBS for awhile; especially around 3/17. Eric is opening for John, which could be a bit of a ticklish situation. Bogle's rare Chicago visits are a big deal, like a comet to an astronomer. McDermott, on the other hand, was through here just last March. I was actually thinking of begging a local pub to extend an offer to get Eric to do a brief mid-night gig, but he's in Ohio the next night so . . . probably not. Bob P |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: late 'n short 2 Date: 26 Jul 01 - 04:51 PM Bob P Don't want to offend any John McDermott fans--I've enjoyed listening to him at times--but I wouldn't go to see him by himself. I prefer to view this as McDermott closing for Bogle. Dan |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: ddw Date: 26 Jul 01 - 11:57 PM Bob P, John McDermott was not one of the Three Irish Tenors — he just stood in with them during one of their performances. For those of you who don't know him, JMcD is a Toronto boy who sorta sprang onto the Canadian scene a few years ago. He had never sung except for family gatherings, in church and the usual amateur venues until he went into a recording studio to make a tape of old songs for his father — who was reputed to have a great voice himself. Included in the mix were several of Eric B's songs (albiet with altered titles and mangled lyrics), Christmas In The Trenches and other tearjerkers. Not sure how it all shook out, but somebody got his hands on the tape, thought John had potential and got it produced commercially. He's been touring ever since and apparently growing in popularity all over North America. BTW — I think he's better than any of the TITs, maybe not technically, but certainly for having a more natural delivery. cheers, david |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: ddw Date: 27 Jul 01 - 12:15 AM Bob — maybe apologies are in order. Just hit the blicky above and see that he did, in fact tour as part of the TITs. The only time I ever saw him with them on PBS, the other three did a segment of the show, then he came on for a while and then the other one came back. My recollection is that in the credits they didn't list him as one of the three, either. But I stand corrected. humble apologies. david |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: late 'n short 2 Date: 27 Jul 01 - 11:13 AM It seemed like an odd pairing when I first came across it but this will be my second chance to see Eric in person in the last year and though I'd rather see him in a solo appearance, I'll take what I can get. The US leg of the tour is called the "Remembrance Tour". According to his web-site, McDermott has a strong interest in, and is active in, veterans affairs. His "Rememberance" album includes several of Eric's songs and Eric's fans are well familiar with his interest in WW I. Maybe that's the connection. Dan |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: ScottyG Date: 27 Jul 01 - 01:25 PM Finbar Wright, in an interview during a PBS begathon said that he had been contacted at extremely short notice and asked to stand in for John McDermott at the Belfast engagement of the Irish Tenors. John had to back-out because of his mother's death. He did, however, make a surprise appearance at the Belfast concert and performed a tribute to his parents, including, "Tis the Last Rose of Summer", which was his mother's favorite song. He nearly didn't make it through without breaking down. Finbar also appeared in John's absence at the Ellis Island performance, and again, John made a cameo appearance. They way I understood it, the Irish Tenor lineup was always intended to be McDermott, Ronan Tynan, and Anthony Kearns. I'm not sure whether John intends to rejoin them, or if Finbar is now in the permanent lineup. As for the connection between Eric Bogle and John McDermott - Do you reckon it might be that they are BOTH Scottish-born? John moved to Toronto with his family in the mid-60's. Like Dan said, maybe it's also Eric's keen interest in WW1 and John's in military veterans in general, and the sacrifices they have made for their countries. At any rate, they're both great musicians in their own right, but Eric is the maestro of the two. I certainly plan to catch them if and when they pass through my neck of the woods. By the way...McDermott sings "Danny Boy" the way it SHOULD be sung, and does indeed stand-out from Ronan and Anthony. There's my two cents worth. ScottyG |
Subject: RE: Bogle/McDermott Tour From: GUEST Date: 27 Jul 01 - 04:42 PM For what it's worth, The best Danny Boy is done by the newest member of the Limelighters. His name is Rick Dogherty. In my humble opinion. Bob P
