Can anybody direct me to the Irish text underlying the C F Alexander English hymn called "St Patrick's Breastplate" or "St Patrick's Lorica"? To the tune it's sung in in Irish? To the traditional words sung to the interpolated tune "Deirdre" (the "Christ be with me, Christ within me" stanza that is normally given as the next-to-last verse of the Alexander hymn)? To any other pertinent details, discussion of origins, scholarly takes on Patrician provenance, etc., etc.?

A Google search for "St Patrick's Breastplate' gives lots of hits, including:

Don't know what happened to that clickie thing - I probably left out a bracket. I'll try again:

I found a different song, apparently, at St. Patrick's Breastplate

The two (Stewie's and George's) versions don't look that dissimilar to me. Thanks. So is there a different Irish text that underlies the other stanzas (1-7, 9) of Mrs. Alexander's St. Patrick's Breastplate (since only verse 8, the one sung to Deirdre, seems clearly and directly based on the Gaelic texts you guys found for me; that and part of verse 9)? Or did she write it all herself, or what? I have a MIDI of seven verses, and one of 9 verses, accessible from my Hymnal Additions page (listed under "St. Patrick's Breastplate" in the list of newly added melodies (sorry it's not in English; the Cyber Hymnal MIDI is lacking the Deirdre interpolation).

I'm transferring these issues to this thread. Thanks for pointing it out, Brían; there's a note for you there about Bunessan texts.

And thanks Jeff for the editing work.
