Subject: RE: Fogarty's Cove Chords From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 28 Jul 01 - 03:10 AM If the chords don't exactly line up in your display, just copy the whole thing to your word pro and change the font to "Courier New". Should do the trick. |

Subject: RE: Fogarty's Cove Chords From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Jul 01 - 02:00 PM Good work on the chords! Any clue what the phrase "Wild Rose Chance" means? Is it a landmark, a village, a figment of Roger's collective imagination? |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 27 May 03 - 08:25 PM I have also wondered about the meaning of Wild Rose Chance. There are certainly no pubs in Fogarty's Cove. We are talking about a rugged shoreline with a very small population. I suspect that it is a local term as the places mentioned are real. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 May 03 - 10:44 PM I seem to recall that there is no Fogarty's Cove either though right? :-) |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 28 May 03 - 05:25 AM Fogarty's Cove and Fogarty's Head are located a few miles from the town of Canso, where the Stanfest is held. They do exist and are located between Queensport and Canso. Lazy Head and Half Island also lie on this stretch of coastline. This is a direct quote from Stan in his songbook: " For some strange reason , government maps of Chedabucto Bay, Nova Scotia, show the place that I think of as Fogarty's Cove as being called Indian Cove. A lot they know." The place that dosen't exist is Make And Break Harbour. That name came from the old put-put engines (the one-lunger) that most fishermen used in earlier days. It was chosen to apply to any fishing community along that shore. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST Date: 18 May 07 - 06:25 PM Was curious about this myself, sorry to hear Wild Rose Chance either doesn't exist or is locally known only. For those interested in science fiction, S.M. Stirling's "Island in the Sea of Time" and it's sequels make some use of Stan's music, including a small town (in a Bronze Age Long Island) being named Fogarty's Cove - with a rather nice tavern named Wild Rose Chance. Thought it a nice homage. Cheers! -j |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Bob the Postman Date: 18 May 07 - 08:05 PM Wild Rose Chance is the girl's name. Like Daisy Fortune, except it's Wild Rose Chance. Or like the hillbilly girl in Steinbeck's "Grapes Of Wrath" named Rose of Sharon, or Rosasharn as he gives it in dialect. Maybe Papa Chance was away working in Alberta when his daughter was born so they named her Wild Rose after the provincial flower. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST Date: 06 Jul 12 - 12:30 AM I thought the girl's name was Sally? |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 06 Jul 12 - 12:54 AM "eyes like the top of a stove" What damsel could resist such a romantic fantasy? |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Jul 12 - 09:04 AM "Wild Rose Chance" as the name of a seaside pub makes lots of sense. "Wild Rose" is typically the name of a cheap whisky or other such liquor, while "chance" used to mean "favorable" as in the nautical phrase "chance of wind." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: meself Date: 06 Jul 12 - 10:26 AM The idea of a 'seaside pub' has romantic appeal - but as far as I know, such a thing was an exceedingly rare creature in the Maritimes - still is, although not quite as much so now as in the 1960s or whatever earlier era Stan was imagining. See Sandy's first post. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,Brendan McGuire Date: 30 Jan 13 - 11:12 PM Yeah, I didn't get the line about "eyes like the top of a stove" either. What is that about? |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST,Rory O'Donnell Date: 07 Feb 13 - 10:41 AM Eyes like the top of a stove is not referring to the shape of her eyes, but rather the warmth. |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST Date: 07 Feb 13 - 10:44 AM I though she had black eyes from walking into too many doors?? |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: GUEST Date: 09 Feb 13 - 08:16 PM Okay, thanks, that makes sense. Why didn't I think of that? |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: meself Date: 09 Feb 13 - 08:38 PM I take the "eyes" business to be a reference to the round, removable, lids over the holes in the top of a woodstove, of the type that were common in country kitchens of the Maritimes (and elsewhere)in Stan's early days. |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 10 Feb 13 - 09:24 PM Stan's legacy will live long beyond his too short life but like Hank Williams, I often wonder what he would have written had he survived longer? |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: Fogarty's Cove (Stan Rogers) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 26 Jun 14 - 11:42 AM In the front page of todays Halifax Herald it tells of the coming destruction of Fogarty's Cove; how the land is being expropriated from the Fogarty family to house a large gravel quarry.
