Check spelling. Coombe is not in my Gaelic Dictionary. "Comb your hair and curl it" is an Irish slip jig. See Fiddler's Companion index at celtic.stanford.edu/tunes/fc/

"Biddy Mulligan the pride of the Coombe" is probably in the DT.I take it the name is not a coincidence?

Don't think the word is Gaelic, Bruce - probably the same old word for a hollow that appears in many English placenames.

Martin, you're right. Coomb, combe, dialectical English via Middle English from Anglo-Saxon. A deep, narrow valley.

I have seen the tune "Biddy Mulligan pride of the coombe." But I don't think that is the tune (haven't played it yet) The tune that I am lookine for is listed as "No.6 The Coombe." on the CHIEFTAIN'S 7 album. Dan

That's a different story, Dan! I'll check but have a vague memory that its a modern tune named after the house of a wll known Dublin musician.
