You've handed us a pretty big job. Peadar will have to look to someone else for chords. These songs were sung unaccompanied and I myself wouldn't put accompaniment to the majority of these songs.

If Peadar is not familiar enough with these songs that he needs the words, maybe he should invest in some recordings. CLÓ IAR-CHONNACHTA HOME PAGE is a really good resource. Many of the recordings come with the words.

Actually, Several of those are Scottish Gaelic, and not Irish.

The DT Forum did talk over Bheir Mi O and both the Scottish as well as Gaelic versions were given.

I'll dig out the Fioghualla's Bothy and Calum Sgaire later. Calum Sgaire was written by a fellow from the Isle of Lewis.

And there are people complaining about the lyrics in contemporary songs? Not that I am. A fine song from the singing of Tomás Ó Máille on the CD Glór Mhaigh Eo

There is a more complete version in Amhráin Chlainne Gael.
This is a well known song in connemara. I have had singers sing snatches of it to me at parties and at the Irish language class. I presume it is a song that they sang in each other's houses, though it is often hard to get people to be specific about something that to them seems so ubitquitous. Again, I could offer a translation if anyone asks for it.

Good question, Paddy. I asked my friend Bart who grew up in Inverin, Co. Galway and says he learned it from a man in the town. "Tír na Long" roughly translated is the "Land of Ships". He told me "It's far away from where he's living". Amráin Chlainne Gael identifies the place as Sasana, England, but gives no explanation how that phrase came about. I assume this song came out of a period of both intense poverty and recruitment by the British.

"Maidin I mBearra" I have heard sung to the tune of Danny Boy. It was recorded for Folkways Records by Deirdre Ní Fhlóinn, although they misspelled her name "Fhlionn."

There is only one thing wrong with the two verses of " 'Sé fáth mo bhuartha," as posted to this thread on 30 July 2001 by Brían:

the second verse is missing one line -- there ought to be eight lines, there are only seven printed here. The missing line is in the second set of four lines; counting all eight in one stanza, the missing line would be Line 6.

Here are the final four lines for Verse 2.

Ag siúl na mboíthre is na gcoillte clómhar   
Ní bheadh orm brón ná tuirse croidhe   
Ach mé bheith pósta le mo mhíle stóirín
Is mo lámh go bródúil ar a brollach mín

Both verses were recorded by Máire Ní Scolaí with piano accompaniment for HMV, as a 78 RPM vinyl single in the late 1930's. Re-issued, since then, by Gael Linn on a vinyl LP featuring the mezzo-soprano singer.
