Hi Catters, I recently met a man while playing a gig in East Aurora , New York ( south of Buffalo ). He said his name was Steve Mann , although , he made it clear that this was his stage name. He said he was a member of the New Christy Minstrels in the early to mid sixties. He is 59 years old, originally from the New York City area, seems to be Jewish ( if that helps ). He seemed to have a strong background on the songs and artists of that time and many personal antedotes of the life and times of many famous performers. EX. Dylan, always being called Bobby then and how Dylan's personel hygene really needed some help in 61-63.He is a little over 6 Feet tall and wears glasses today. Just wondering if any of you can help me identify him . He will be coming back to see me play on August 31 . Thanks everyone.

This may help. I don't know if this includes all the members, though. I knew two fellows, Terry Wadsworth and Jim Fosso who, I believe, were with them for a brief period. I'm not sure about Jim, but Terry was with them for about a year, and he wrote at least one song that they performed (but I don't know if they ever recorded it).

Does anyone Know whatever happened to the original members of the group? Other than Barry McGuire, where are the rest of them today? I think I read in one of the new double CD re-issues that my all time favorite member Nick Woods, died of an accidental drug overdose. Is that true? Hard to believe he did drugs. I think it said he died in 1972. Hope some one can answer my question! Thanks

In response to your fan's question about the Christies, here is a quick rundown of the Christies whereabouts:

McGuire is still based in Fresno (more precisely, Clovis) and very active singing with Terry Talbot on the Christian music circuit, although they've branched into secular music as well. I suggested John Stewart's "I Remember America" for Barry and he's been performing it in concert for several years now. Barry Kane is based in Los Angeles and works for a collection agency, but still dables is music occasionally. His voice sounds better than ever. Art Podell works at a prestigious Mercedes dealership in Santa Monica and, now and then, writes some songs and fiddles around in the studio with Kane, or Treat, or Gunderson. Dolan Ellis is still the Arizona State Balladeer and has just completed an interesting CD about the history of the Southwest -- nice, rich story songs. He sounds much the same. Peggy Connelly was performing in a female jazz trio in Paris a few years back -- Jazzberries. I think she's back in the states (California), but I'm not sure what she's up to.

Jackie Miller Davidson lives in the San Fernando Valley and enjoys a quiet life with friends. She keeps in touch with Art now and then and -- all too rarely -- with Gayle Caldwell. We lost Gene Clark in the last '80's as I'm sure you know. Clarence Treat -- now a retired fireman -- lives in Glendale and has own, private recording studio for fun and personal enjoyment. He recorded a solo CD last year for friends and family. Larry Ramos now lives in Idaho at his ranch. He still performs with the Association during the summer months. Gayle Caldwell has been performing up in Mendocino, CA. She has a regular stint at a small resort up there, but has also been giving small concerts -- very well-received. She sounds just the same, too. She has branched into pop and jazz, but still likes folk, too. Karen Gunderson lives in Fresno and will sing or record now and then for personal fun or projects with friends. Pure class. Ann White lives in Fresno, too, but she and Karen really don't see each other all that much. Ann will still perform now and then as a session singer -- she has recorded on countless soundtracks, the Academy Awards shows, and has backed up many, many prestigious artists (Mathis, Bacharach, Sinatra, Glen Campbell, et al. A few years back, she was part of a tight vocal quintet called "Savoy" -- with Monica Mancini, Earl Brown and others. They recorded with Rosemary Clooney on her allbum, Girl Singer. Jerry Yester still performs with MFQ now and then. He lives in Hawaii, last I heard. Paul Potash is a musical director in his church in Kansas City. He sounds better than ever. Nice, nice man. Randy Sparks has formed a group called the New and Improved Minstrels and has been performing in California and Kansas off and on over the past 2 years. They have a lot of fun on stage and he's mighty proud of his ensemble, but I don't think they match the integrity of the glory years.

Nick Woods did indeed die of an accidental drug overdose in 1971, but it was really out of character. He was a brilliant arranger and the best voice ever associated with the Christies. He was very conservative throughout his years with the group -- clean as a whistle, sports jacket and tie as normal attire, and an avid reader of the Wall Street Journal. After the Christies, he worked with Art Podell and co-produced some albums for Biff Rose, and he later did some work with McGuire and Van Dyke Parks. Hollywood being what it was in the late Sixties/early Seventies with social values changing rather dramatically, he did indeed experiment with drugs. Sadly, we lost him as a result.

In the summer of '94, there was a summer-long series of concerts in Oakhurst, CA. Participating were McGuire, Podell, Ramos, Treat, Davidson, Caldwell, Ellis, Potash and White. Kane, Gunderson and Sparks weren't interested. Ann wanted very much to participate -- so the group bent the "two females" rule and invited her to participate as the ninth Minstrel. They performed as "A Gathering of Minstrels." (My name, by the way.) They started shortly before Memorial Day. By Labor Day, they sounded fantastic. Wonderful shows. Unfortunately, it didn't work out financially to anyone's satisfaction. Without large scale audiences on a consistent basis, a group the size of the Christies becomes very hard to sustain.

Cheers!

I would REALLY like to hear if this turns out to be Terry Wadsworth. I last saw him in an English style pub in San Francisco in 1972. I'd love to have a hoot for him and play catch up! If it IS HIM, give him my e-mail adress please. CHEERS, Bob Nelson

My name is Summer Wadsworth and Terry Wadsworth was my father. Although I never met him as my parents split in 1965ish, I have attempted on occasion to try and search for him or other friends and family members. About twenty years or so ago, I spoke with Hoyt Axton who told me that my father had committed suicide. The last place of residence that I could find was in Santa Rosa, CA. Please if anyone has information, memories, photos anything regarding my father, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Please.

Dolan is indeed the baladeer...
he does cowboy music and here
is his web page.

and here is the new christy minstrels page
Click

Wikipedia entry
from this page it says"The name deliberately evoked Christy's Minstrels, an enormously popular 19th century blackface minstrel group founded by Edwin Pearce Christy"

formed by Randy sparks in 1961...
also kenny rogers is listed as a former member.

Here is what i found on Terry Wadsworth--on Steve Mann's site

"And I was hanging out with a guy named Terry Wadsworth. Later he joined Randy Sparks and the New Christy Minstrels, and he would do Furry Louis songs, which I thought was terrific. He wrote a lot of songs, too.

While me and Mike Kramer were hanging out he turned me on to Terry Wadsworth. He was a real good singer. He worked the Boodeye In Oklahoma City and I thought he was real good. He played a little banjo too, Terry Wadsworth. I mostly learned songs and then worked up arrangements for them, didn't write many myself. I'm not too strong on the lyrics. Give me a set of lyrics and I can set them to music, but I believe I love the old blues the best. "

Although not an original member Bill Zorn also did a stint with the Christies. To quote from his biog on the Kingston Trio website:

In February 1970 both Pete [Zorn] and I became New Christy Minstrels after auditioning on the telephone for Sid Garris; I became musical director in May 1970 and leader later that year. We toured in the USA and internationally - virtually non-stop for four years. When I left, I had been the group's longest serving leader and had done the longest non-stop stretch of any member.

English audiences may remember him as being part of The Arizona Smoke Revue in the 70s and 80s alongside his brother Pete, Paul Downes, Phil Beer and, occasionally, Steve Knightley.

His further adventures on these shores can be found here:   http://www.kingstontrio.com/html/bill_zorn.htm

Head over to the New Christy Minstrels site. Randy Sparks is busy rehearsing the "Class of 2010" New Christy Minstrels. In the past 2 years (2008, 2009), we have seen "The New Christy Minstrels" in concerts in Florida. The audiences were mostly retirees. My wife and I, in our late 50s, were among the youngest kids there. We traveled 2 hours each time because several of the original Christies were out of retirement, so to speak, so we heard Randy Sparks, Dolan Ellis, Jackie Miller Davidson, Art Podell, and Clarence Treat. A couple of other "ringers" rounded out a group of 7. I enjoyed Becky Jo Benson very much, and her "ringer" career as a NCM has been since the late 1990s, I believe. The ensemble blend was so much fun, but a couple of the individual voices were showing much roughness of age. Still- would not have missed it. And their after show meet-and-greet autograph sessions were a treasure.
Well, Art, Jackie, and Clarence have left this revived ensemble, and the "magic" of seeing the original NCMinstrels has left with it, in my humble opinion (not having heard the new replacements). I wish them all well. The New Christy Minstrel official website gives extensive promo introductions by Randy Sparks that the "Class of 2010 is 'the real deal.'

Steve Mann was the stage name of the late Stephen N. Gottesman, of East Aurora, New York. Steve was known to me as a trustee of Calasanctius Preparatory School of Buffalo when I was headmaster in 1983-86. He died this past week: his obituary is on the Buffalo News website.

Thanks Stuart,

I thought I was going round the bend. I once got up and played a set with Bill Zorn at a festival back when The Arizona Smoke Review was in full fling and he introduced a song that he said he learned when doing bits with The New Christy Minstrels.

Since then, I have CRASH!!! name dropped the connection. (Sad little bugger I am.)

Jerry Yester lives near Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and performs solo regularly at the Stonehouse and Chez Charles. He has a wonderful repertoire and a treasure trove of stories from his time with Lovin' Spoonful, MFQ, and others, but i don't remember him mentioning that he had worked with the Minstrels. We visit Eureka from Springfield, Mo often, and always spend an evening with Jerry. I will ask him for some detail next time down, probably July 4, 2014 weekend.

I ADORED the New Christy Minstrels when I was a teenager in Indiana. I got to see them onstage twice! And I was heartbroken when the singers left. I have wondered for years what had happened to them. I am so sorry that so many have passed on. But I am deeply grateful I was able to see and hear them. Treasured Memories!

.............I was only with the Christie's for a year or so in '75 '76 and have good memories of that time travelling in America. As a Brit I was accepted and appreciated with warmth and wages. I recall Ricky Araiza, Lollita Affifi, Ike Egan, Mike Alley, Jan Jamieson, Karen (Sparka?), Clive Hughes, Tony Irvine, Ed Suski, Rick n' Caroline Hanson..Plus Greif, Garris and, with great fondness, Jim Seaman.
Happy to hear from any of 'em, though I'm in England so reunions prob'ly ain't happening.

I have no connection with the Christies but I do remember you from thirty odd years ago. Not sure exactly where but likely either Staleybridge Station or somewhere in Stockport - i seem to remember that your party piece at the time was a poem "Biny Little Tirds".

I exchanged a dozen or so messages on YouTube with a woman who said she was Karen Gunderson but then she stopped conversing - I was leery about inquiring about her feelings on Nick Woods, worried it would upset her and cause her to withdraw but I never heard from her again beyond that short time. I would love to hear from her again because I always thought she had THE most beautiful voice.

Ike! I'm really sorry. Haven't visited this site for ages. I can only hope that you see this.
Enjoyed your company very much when we were together..Despite your disapproval of me and my habits!
Memories of you bopping down to Dairy Queen playing your bass with your earphones on, your lovely new wife joining us on the bus for a little while..Not to mention the trauma of you breaking a string on your ax and having to rub barbecue sauce and dirt in it for ages to try to balance the sound against the other strings.
If you never see this I wish you well. You're a good man and I profited from knowing you.

Jackie Miller Davidson now lives in Michigan, and performs folk music of the 60s with partner Gary Brandt (also an ex-Christy). I often play with them at an almost-monthly hootenanny at a mutual friend's house. Her banjo and voice are in fine form.
