Subject: The Hunger Site - what's happening? From: GeorgeH Date: 31 Jul 01 - 05:01 AM The Hunger Site - my home page: http://www.thehungersite.com/index.html (makes a donation to famine relief every time you visit, for those who don't know) has been displaying an "undergoing maintenance" banner, and nothing else, for a couple of weeks now. Do any of you state-side 'catters have any info. as to what's going on there? Thanks, George |
Subject: RE: BS: The Hunger Site - what's happening? From: Mark Cohen Date: 31 Jul 01 - 05:21 AM I haven't visited the site in a few weeks (shame on me) so I didn't know this until you pointed it out. I know that recently they had opened up several new linked sites, for land mine injuries and blindness prevention and breast cancer research, etc., and I also had noticed that the numbers of sponsors had dwindled since I first started visiting the site a year and a half or so ago. So my suspicion is that they may be trying to fend off the grim cyber-reaper. I'd be happy to discover otherwise, however, because I think it was a great idea. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: The Hunger Site - what's happening? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Jul 01 - 06:21 AM I have a link to it on my home page, and have made a point of visiting it and the five sub-sites every day (takes about 30 seconds) - but recently they've all gone as George says.
My wife saw something in a paper about the whole site folding, which would be a shame. Clicking on them always made me feel that if I didn't do anything else worth doing in a day, I'd do that.
If anyone knows anything definite, post it here. And if we have lost it, and there's anything else like it, let us know. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Hunger Site - what's happening? From: Gervase Date: 31 Jul 01 - 07:10 AM It looks as though the site has folded, sadly. A piece in the Guardian at the weekend (which I no longer have) mentioned that the corporate sponsors had pulled the plug. However, as I recall, the site had raised some £4 million, which represents a heck of a lot of clicks. As for a subsitute, anyone else got any ideas? |

From: Gervase Date: 31 Jul 01 - 07:20 AM ...meanwhile there are some other altruistic sites out there which are worth a look. www.free2give.co.uk lets you buy a range of goods and services online and donates a percentage of what you spend to charity. There's also www.getethical.com, which again offers a variety of goods and services, and lets you specify that charity to benefit from a proportion of your spend. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Hunger Site - what's happening? From: GeorgeH Date: 31 Jul 01 - 07:59 AM So who are the corporate sponsors who pulled the plug? If they were the people hosting the site then some sort of complaint campaign must be worth a try (after all, the costs of hosting the site are peanuts . . ) Clearly if the people who were actually making the charitable donations have pulled out then there's nothing we can do except feel that the world's a slightly worse place than it was a couple of weeks ago . . Subject: RE: BS: The Hunger Site - what's happening? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Aug 01 - 08:21 AM Here is confirmation that they've pulled the plug on it
If anyone has any ideas for registering disapproval, or finding someone who is doing something similar, please post it here. |
