Subject: 'Early One Morning' Songbook - details?
From: GeorgeH
Date: 31 Jul 01 - 09:50 AM

Jill, a good friend of ours runs the excellent bookshop in the village. A would-be customer has asked her if she can locate the following song book:

Early One Morning
Sea Shanties, Folk Songs and Rounds

Jill can't locate this in any of her catalogues. The aspiring customer has given Jill details of a supposed supplier in Germany, whom Jill has emailed.

So, Mudcatters . .

a) Is anyone familiar with this?

b) Any additional details? (Publisher, ISBN, in print??)

Thanks (in anticipation, or hope)!

George

George

I've looked for this and there's no trace of it on the web. Sounded to me a bit like a school song book?

No sign of it in the Basic Folk Library or any of the bibliographical links there. Also can't find it at Amazon (though that's no real surprise).

Sorry!
Ian

Yes, sorry, I should have said I'd done the basic searches . .

My first reaction was school song book, although an emphasis on Shanties would be unusual there . .

Thanks anyway . .

G.

As Nutty indicated, it looks like it's a songbook used in Waldorf schools. This site gives information:
Jaffke C. and Maier, M., Early One Morning. Folk Songs - Rounds - Ballads - Shanties - Spirituals and Plantation Songs - Madrigals, Rudolf Steiner Library, Rudolf Steiner College Bookstore in US (Fair Oaks, California), Rudolf Steiner Bookshop, London.
My wife and stepson were associated with a Waldorf school for ten years, but they're not familiar with the book.

Since the songbook was published by a school in Stuttgart, Germany I think the book was compiled for the use in English lessons; this may be the cause for a collection of so many types of songs.
I haved asked the school for more information.

More details.
An all state OPAC research in Germany got me one copy in another state library where the book was published and - three copies in our English department. Sometimes it is good to be a librarian in a univeristy library.
As I presumed the book is a collection to accompany English lessons from the beginning (10 years) to high school level (19 years). It contains
103 songs, a few in two or three parts:
Folk songs: 33 ; rounds: 43 ; Ballads: 7 ; shanties: 5 ; spirituals and plantation songs: 9 ; madrigals: 6

It was published by the Pedagogic Research Dept of the Free Waldorf Schools Association (Pädagogische Forschungsstelle beim Bund der Freien Waldorfschulen) in Stuttgart. The Waldorf Schools are part of the Anthroposophy Movement founded by Rudolf Steiner, of Austria.

No ISBN given; not in the German equivalent to Books In Print.

So I think your friend Jill should try the Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, CA.

I hope this might be helpful for her, more I couldn't find out.

Cheers
Wilfried

Wilfried - any chance you could scan the table of contents and post it here? I used to live around the corner from Rudolph Steiner College, and I really liked their bookstore. It has a better collection of folklore and folk music books than any other store in the Sacramento area. That's one of the many things I liked about my stepson's Waldorf school - they taught folklore.
Many of the Waldorf/Steiner schools have small book and gift shops, and you may be able to get the book at a nearby Waldorf school that hasn't sold out the previous edition of the book.

Joe - Methinks most if not all the songs are in the DT, maybe except the madrigals. I hadn't the time to check it out because the first I did this morning was to make haste to answer your question.
