She is alive and well and living in California. She recently released a new CD which is wonderful.

Here is her website -

I picked up a two-CD set at a used record store the other day, two of Judy Henske's Elektra albums. The box says there are other two-disc sets coming from Tim Buckley, David Blue, The Dillards, Fred Neil, The Butterfield Blues Band, Judy collins, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, and Tom Rush. I checked with CDNow.com, and they show the two Henske albums for sale - but as two separate CD's. Anybody know the story about these Elektra reissues? I think my double CD's are from Elektra's UK division. I couldn't find anything about them at www.elektra.com. It's good news that Elektra is finally reissuing stuff from their folk catalog. I wonder if they'll reissue The Many Sides of Sandy Paton....

Here are the tracks on the Henske albums. I have to admit that I don't really like most of them, although some are quite interesting.

Judy Henske

1. Low Down Alligator
2. Empty Bed Blues
3. Ballad Of Little Romy
4. Wade In The Water
5. Hooka Tooka
6. I Know You Rider
7. Lily Langtree
8. Lilac Wine
9. Love Henry
10. Every Night When The Sun Goes In
11. Salvation Army Song

High Flying Bird

1. High Flying Bird
2. Buckeye Jim
3. Till the Real Thing Comes Along
4. Oh, You Engineer
5. Baltimore Oriole
6. Blues Chase Up a Rabbit
7. Lonely Train
8. Duncan and Brady
9. God Bless the Child
10. Good Old Wagon
11. You Are Not My First Love
12. Charlotte Town

I have 4 Electra re-issues - Judy Henske, Phil Ochs (both double CDs) & Tom Paxton & Fred Neil (both single CD). All are in their original slipcovers & have very informative leaflets.

I bought them earlier this year from my favourite CD shop which sell mainly re-issues, jazz, blues, folk, rock - almost every record you've ever owned!!.

I think I remember Lee showing me a review article about the series in one of the magazines. I'll ask him tomorrow

I have always loved those two Judy Henschke albums which I have had since the 1960s, and am pleased to hear she has a new album out. She is a bitchin' lady.

An early morning visit to my favourite CD shop lead to lots of skimming thruback issues of Mojo till I had to leave for work, but all we found was a full page ad in the Feb 02 issue, showing the 10 CD's inside the back covers of the albums. It also said they were newly re-mastered with new liner notes & rarely seen pictures.

Nev remembered an article & will keep looking (it's good for him to go thru back issues, he sees stuff he needs to order, fortunately I don't need to buy all of them, tho!) If we get any more info I'll post it.

I heard about Judy Henske way back when, but I never actually heard her. I rediscovered her a couple of years ago when somebody here asked the same question that POETIC1 did and I felt impelled to do a google search and found she's still truckin' Wow, is she truckin'!

BIG voice! She's mentioned fairly prominently in Jac Holtzman's Follow the Music, in which he describes the career of Elektra Records (fascinating book). In the book, he makes a comment about Judy's huge voice that has been frequently quoted since:-- "Forget about breaking genteel crystal wine goblets. Judy could shatter tempered windshields in the parking lot!"

You can hear that voice in Real Audio HERE. Several cuts, all the way through, which is a treat for a change. So if you're not acquainted with Judy Henske, here's your chance. Be sure to listen to what she does with The Salvation Army Song. When I heard her do that one, I knew she was my kind of woman!

You should also check out Andrew Vachss. Apart from being an amazing writer and an even more amazing guy, he's a total nut about Judy Henske and works her into a lot of his books. Click here for some examples, but then take some time to read about him. You'll be astonished.

As a native Chicagoan, I have been among many of JH's fans for years. The Midnight Special played her from the start and still always plays "Salvation Army" on its New Year's Eve request show (Thanks, Rich). As you may know too, Judy went to Concordia College in near-by River Forest - does anybody know her from those days? Believe it or not, I saw Judy do the first lp at the Golden Bear in LA in '61. Jesse Colin Young opened and Judy had a trombone player among her back-up musicians. She recently appeared at the Old Town School in Chicago. What do folks think of her new cd's? I also have the folk lp that she did with Dave Guard (was there just one) and a crazy lp that she did with the fellow from the Loving Spoonful (not Sebastian) --quite a career!!

The "twofers" were released by Warner Bros. (which owns elektra) in the UK, and are sporadically available as imports in the States. Most of the ones you mentioned are out there, somewhere.

Collectors Choice (http://www.ccmusic.com) has been licensing and reissuing old Elektra folk albums in the States, but -- unlike the British releases -- aren't particularly bargains. Butu they may be easier to find. (CCM usually released their own compilations through the catalog and website exclusively for several months, then make them available through regularly retail outlets, where they may be less expensive -- if you can find them).
