Here it is, words (Spanish) with melody.

La Golondrina

Cheers!
Ian

    Pedro Berrios

Colgada a tí, caprichosa
La cuidas, niña divina;
La golondrina es mi persona.
Si del balcón te cayeras
Y debajo me encontrara,
Si en mis brazos te cogiera
Del golpe te consolara.
¡ Ay, niña ! ¡ Ay niña !
Del golpe te consolara.

Niña bonita, niña gentil
La estudiantina va a Madrid.
|: Nunca te olvides de la canción
   Que un estudiante, siempre galante
   Te dedicó. :|

LA GOLONDRINA
(English words Thos. M. Westrup, ca. 1883)

Whither so swiftly flies the timid swallow,
What distant bourne seeks her untiring wing?
To reach it safe, what needle does she follow,
When darkness wraps the poor, wee storm-tossed thing?
To build her nest near to my couch, I'll call her;
Why go so far bright and warm skies to keep!
Safe would she be; no evil should befall her,
For I am an exile sad, too sad to weep;

My fatherland is dear, but I too left it;
Far am I from the spot where I was born;
Cheerless is life, fierce storms of joy bereft it;
Made me an exile lifelong and forlorn.
Come then to me, sweet feathered pilgrim stranger;
Oh! Let me clasp thee to my loving breast,
And list thy warbling low, secure from danger,
Unwonted tears bringing relief and rest.

I will try to find the words by Narciso Sarradell, published by Ditson, 1885. There are several texts in Spanish, and several translations or interpretations in English.

The lyrics above from a copy published in 1889 by Thomas Goggan & Bro., Galveston, TX, compliments of the Mexican National Railroad, which entered Texas at Laredo and crossed to the Gulf.

The Spanish words posted by IanC are from the version found at ingeb.org (words by Pedro Berrios?): La Golondrina

When in Tapachula, Chiapas, I saw a large flock of swallows that would congregate on the power lines and poles at night in the business district. We would drive there to see them gather in the evening, and sometimes eat at the very good French restaurant closeby. They were 'snowbirds' from the States or Canada.

En donde pueda la estación pasar;
También yo estoy en le región perdida
Oh cielo santo! y sin poder volar.

Dejé también mi patria idolatrada,
Esa mansión que me miró nacer,
Mi vida es hoy errante y angustiada
I ya no puedo a mi mansión volver.
Ave querida, amada peregrina,
Mi corazón al tuyo estrecharé,
Oiré tu canto, tierna golondrina,
Recordaré mi patria y lloraré.

A popular text in Mexico to the song.
From Allena Luce, 1921, ed., "Canciones Populares," Silver, Burdett y Compañia, Boston, pp. 62-63, with sheet music. "A Mexican song which corresponds, in spirit, to the American song, "Home, Sweet Home!"

LA GOLONDRINA 3
Narciso Serradel Sevilla, 1862

Con débil voz so lamento expresó.

Ave querida, amada peregrina
Mi corazón al tuyo estrecharé
Oiré tu canto tierna golondrina
Recordaré mi patria y lloraré.

"Narciso Serradel Sevilla (1843-1910), a native of Alverado, Vera Cruz, Mexico, was both a doctor and a composer. During the war against the French Maximiliano, Serradel fought against the French Imperial troops alongside General Zaragoza. He was taken prisoner---and deported to France. He is most famous for his popular song of farewell, "La Golondrina." The song is a favorite of expatriate Mexicans..." It is often requested at the funerals of Mexican-Americans." The first two verses are often omitted (see post above, from "Canciones Populares"). The song is often thought of as "traditional."

In his lyrics, Serradel assumes the persona of Aben Hamid, a Moor of Granada, who was forced to leave his beloved home when Isabella and Ferdinand expelled the Moors and Jews from Spain in the 1490's; they were never to see their homeland, where they had lived for centuries, again.

This is another version..

Where wilt thou go, my agile little swallow..
thy wings will tire if long thy flight should be.. oh
if winds and storms should bring thee pain and anguish..
if seeking shelter none be found for thee.

Ah come to me a soft warm nest I offer..
where all the wintry seasons will pass thee by..
and also I wander in regions so lonely..
midst cold and tempest and have no wings to fly..

The 1883 sheet music (subtitled "An Exile to a Swallow") with English lyrics by Rev. Thos. M. Westrup and published by the "General Passenger Department" of the "Mexican National Railway" can be found in the University of Colorado Digital Shet Music Collection. The cover has crossed Mexican and U. S. flags; the copies were complimentary.

La Golondrina

The Western Trails collection is very attractive; covers of sheet music are illustrated.

At school we sung:
At break of day, I watched the homing swallow,
as towards the south he wings his distant flight,
    Oh happy flight.
Thou beauteous bird Ah wish that I could follow,
to that far land, where dwells my hearts delight.

    Verse
For ah to thee, my restless thoughts come thronging,
of lovers meeting and the memory of bliss,
both night and day my heart is filled with longing,
again to feel the magic of your kiss.
There may have been another verse but after 50 years thememory dims but never that haunting melody

I have a volume of the Scribner's Radio Music Library (1936) with this song in it. The first four lines are the same as those posted by a guest in 2010. After that, it's different.

"Where wilt thou go, my agile little swallow..
thy wings will tire if long thy flight should be.. oh
if winds and storms should bring thee pain and anguish..
if seeking shelter none be found for thee."

A message to my loved one wilt thou carry,
to tell her that I love her so.
With joy I'll greet thee when thou returnest,
and on my bosom pillow thy dear self.

B part

O swallow, carry the message of love for me
to her who waits with heart and soul so true.
fly thous with wings on the sweet breeze wafted
and tell my love I'm thinking e'er of her!

It breaks my heart sweet bird to have you leave me
Ifear you'll tire and weaken in your flight
If you but knew how deepyour love will grieve me
You should remain to make my sad life bright

Verse

The happy days are far behind me
when I was living in the land I love
but still the fond chains of memory bind me
Though now, an exile lonely I must rove.

Verse

If you will stay I never will neglect you
I'll make a cosy nest so soft and warm
From winter cold and storm I will protect you
'Twill be my care to shield you from all harm.

This is added to the two verses submitted 10 July 2012.

Ed
