Next Easter, end of March begining of April our family is heading to the States to have the Florida experience. While I must attend the theme parks etc with the family and am told by everyone that has been I will enjoy it.Is there any where I can get a bit of a fix on some proper live music as I think I might need it!!!!

...that's the peak festival season in Florida, Selby. There are several near Dade City not too far from Orlando and one in Live Oak. Check out Florida Old-Time Music Championships on the web, as well as the Will McLean Festival and Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. The www.foff.org site will give a complete listing of music events that time of the year!!! Hope to see you! harpgirl

nope... none at all... it's illegal there as a matter of fact... and you could be arrested just for asking about it by the way...

Enquiring next March may give a better indication of who's playing in April 2002

Mind you, if music's illegal there...

Watch the 'gators, they lure you into conversation with witty remarks, one minute you be laughing your head off, and the next, they've got an arm or a leg as well. And be very careful of the oranges--they're friendly enough, but are prone to droning on and on about little, pointless annoyances--

John at Celtic Ways organises loads of live music in florida. I would say he's a good port of call.

All interesting stuff.

My father spends his winter in Clearwater in Florida, and his summers in Manchester, England (so he gets his summers in winter, and his winters in summer!). I'm hoping to visit him next February. Is it worth bringing my melodeon and my voice?

John

I send out a monthly List of Central Florida Folk events - member organizations as well as most other live venues. This includes the Orlando area (where most of the theme parks are.) We are all open mics, small concerts & round-robin things. Just ask & I'll put you on the List.

The festivals are north & south & most can be accessed from the State-wide organization, FOFF, website: FOFF

Have fun.

Hmmm. Seems someone stole my identity. Contact me about Central FL, trying to contact Guest may not work too well.

There's a lot of great local talent here in Fl. Look in the entertainment section of the local papers any Thursday of the week to find what's going on in your area. Every 4th Sunday there is a fine session at Annie Moore Pub in St. Pete Beach (west side of the coast, near Tampa area). Visiting folks on vacation from Ireland, Scotland, Whales, New Foundland, England join in, and to me that is what makes the session truly a good one! When you start looking for music in Fl. you'll discover it's all around. Hope to see you 'round. Whistledon

If you want to play some old time music, look up Tom Staley and Fay Baird in Micanopy. Fine fiddle and banjo.

Selby, there's more to Florida than just old blind voters. You can get some help for your trip , just go to http://www.southfloridafolkfest.com/ and check it out . also check the link for the Broward Folk Club. They are all nice people but trust me, they all come to Texas in May/June for the Kerrville Festival.

Frogmore, I'm bound for St. Augustine; wil be there 8/17 - 8/22.

I expect to drop $$ into the hats of St. George St. performers (sorry, I dislike the term "buskers") to assist their struggle to freely make acoustic music.

Beyond that, I expect to search out folk/acoustic tunes.

Especially in places where a person might also enjoy a pint of something a bit stronger than Seattle's Best.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Bob P

If you do end up at Disney World there is a House Of Blues restaurant at Downtown Disney. Mostly rock and blues acts but you might get lucky and find someone good there. The best thing at the House of Blues is the Sunday morning gospel brunchs { IF you like gospel }. Also in the same shopping complex is a nice little guitar shop if you're in the market for a Martin. Have a good time and take sunscreen - even in April. Wesley - ex-Floridian.

BobP...The White Lion hosts most of the musicians in the St. Augustine area. I think the street musicians have been chased away. But I love to hear Dash Moore when he is about. Marty Schuman always enjoyed playing the street. Have fun!! harpgirl

This is primarily for BobP, who asked. I've lived and played St. Augustine for 21 years, although I take care of a great old guy in a S.C. hospital this summer. St. Aug. is a very special town, esp. for music and songwriters. That's why I chose it. There is much going on 7 nights a week, happy hour gigs, and some afternoon things. Don't miss: The Milltop, the White Lion, The Tradewinds, Stogie's (where I generally play nowadays), Cafe Cortesse, The Oasis at St. Aug. Beach, and others... Some of my old band-mates play in The Housecats, The Driftwoods, and The Wingnuts. Everybody knows everybody and you don't know it but you will soon live there. Also try to have lunch at The Alcazar Cafe where you can enjoy Rick Kuncicky on fingerstyle guitar. Look for Gunga Din if they're around. My favorite beer (brewed on premises) and jolly happy hour is A1A Aleworks by the Bridge of Lions. (Great food too. Also eat at The Gypsy Cab.) Walk or bike around the narrow streets. Bring your friends to the Gamble Rogers Memorial Folk Festival every first weekend of May. Jog at Vilano Beach. Go to the fort. Get on the tourist boat for the sunset cruise with a bottle of wine in your bag. Check out the Ghost Tours and The Alligator Farm which has other critters too. "Feeding Time" for reptiles is a hoot. (Chicken served.) It's a rookery for seabirds at sundown. Lots of cool art galleries. No, I'm not working for the Chamber of Commerce - I just like this whacked-out Spanish town and look forward to resuming my life there. All in all, Florida is a fantastic music state and we are all well-connected through FOFF (Friends of Florida Folk). Ain't nothin' like Flada - have big fun.

Harpgirl and Frogmore,

Wow and thanks!

Have printed & tucked your most helpful guide.

I'm gonna make it my goal to "touch em all".

So very sorry to hear that hard times have fallen upon those who "do it in the road";I'll keep an eye out for the die-hards.

Sunset cruise looks like a goodun.

Mudcat is truly communicator's eden.

I hope the sleaze & flamer crowd find what they're looking for - somewhere else.

Bless you folks one & all.

On the mid west coast, check out the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center...I caught Martin Simpson there last January, and they have ongoing concerts.
