The death has been announced of the stage, television and screen actress Dorothy Tutin. Age 71 she had been suffering from leukaemia and died today (August 6th) in hospital in West Sussex. She left school at fifteen to study music before training at RADA for the stage. Her career spanned over fifty years and one of her best known roles was as Anne Boleyn in the television series "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" where she starred opposite Keith Michel. Films she appeared in include "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1952) as Cecily Cardew; "A Tale of Two Cities (1957) as Lucie Manette and "Cromwell" (1969) as Queen Henrietta Maria. A distinguished member of the Royal Shakespeare Company one of her best roles on stage was as Sally Bowles in "I am a Camera." She married the actor Derek Waring in 1963 and is survived by her two children. She was made a CBE in 1967 and a Dame in 2000. To paraphrase the words of Charles I "She has gone from a corruptible to an incorruptible Crown, where no disturbance can be, no disturbance in the world." Farewell, Dorothy.

Another backbone of the English theatre. I remember her from her RSC days -a stunning performer.

She played "Sister Dora" in TV play about her.
Sister Dora was like Florence Nightingale only she stayed in Walsall.
Nurses 30 years and less ago were still wearing headgear called a Sister Dora after her.
