Oh Oh! ...Amergin ... I have a feeling you're talking about me and MM ... well ... what can I say ... for sure I was thinking about all of you, just that it's a very busy time of year around here, Fall Fairs etc, all of which are 'last minute' plannings. Perhaps a gathering in the fall would be good. We really don't mean to be 'snooty' ... just to much to do in too little time. How about having the next gathering at Musicman's?!!! Or at my new place on Saltspring Is.?

Wow, it sounds like I missed a good gathering. I'm really sorry I couldn't go. I was planning to go up until the last minute, but I sudently had a Household Disaster to deal with. Let's have another before too long -- maybe Stewart and I can put our heads together and find someplace in Seattle for us to get together.

Mrrzy, sorry I missed you. I've been working an erratic schedule lately, so even it you came by Dusty Strings, I probably wasn't there or wasn't available. Please take more Pacific Northwest vacations -- after all, you already know a bunch of people 'round here.

John

Yep!!!! I had a great time too, and really enjoyed meeting you all. Mousethief, and clan,... Thank You! Your hospitality provoked pure joy!

ChanteyMatt, I really like your songs, you certainly do know how to pick'em. Your new guitar is splendid, and matches your voice well.
Stuart, you are so nice and smooth, and your songs are choice.
Mrrzzy, you carry your energy beautifully... And your kids are amazingly present!
JenEllen, I love hearing you sing and play! It seems you could go for hours... Please do... Nice songs!
Mousethief, That Al Stuart song knocked my socks off! What a great ballad! You delivered it piping hot, and the images are still dancing through my mind. Damn, you're good! You play like it is second nature to you.
Amergin, My good man, what a fine writer you are. Those songs are precious, and when you do them, they stand strong and true. I'll bet you've got a bunch more too...

Live long and phosphor! ttr

Well.......I've been waiting to hear from most of the participants before I posted and now it is obvious that not just a good time, but a GREAT time was had by all. Makes a lot of us really envious I don't mind telling you.

Mouse (and all of you really), it was truly great to get something going out there in the great Northwest and now if you can pull off another........... Seriously, regardless of the work, you're ready to do it again aren't you? Alex, here's to you! And now get to work on the next one......Get all those other bums to show up this time....Get Don outta' the wheelchair and coerce Margo up your way too. Your descriptions of each other are pretty much what I expected too.

AND.....Today I was the beneficiary of a really wacky looking photograph with a real dubious looking bunch of folks purporting to be you all. I finally realized it was you guys by the looks of joy on everyone's faces.

Now if somebody would just send me a plane ticket.......

Alex and Charlie, thanks for opening your home to a bunch of people, most of whom you hadn't met before, but now we've made some more good friends. But what happened to the others? - I guess we'll have to wait till the next get-together.

Mrrzy, glad you made it through Portland's traffic (not that Seattle's is any better!). Good to meet you and hope you enjoyed our Great Pacific NW. BTW, the lyrics to Thais are here and .

A couple of you I already knew - Tom and Matt - pleasant surprise and good music. Finally met Benjamin, we only live a couple miles apart, enjoyed talking to you on the ride home. Jen, the semi-official MD-recorder and photographer, good to meet you. And Mag, thanks for the delicious pies, and I enjoyed your singing. Amergin, good to meet you and put a face with a regular Mudcatter, and enjoyed your orginal songs. Now who did I miss? - all the young-uns running around, I'm afraid I didn't get all their names.

Thanks, S. in Seattle

What can I say, they lost my luggage on the way home but we made the connection (by me telling William to keep both me (in front) and Tim (behind) in sight and TEARING up to the gate screaming DON'T LEAVE FOR CHARLOTTESVILLE! since I could see them getting ready to start the props... they let us on the plane by my steadfast repetition of "the plane is still on the ground. Put us on it please" no matter what they offered, other flights, good hotels... so no surprises about the suitcase. Whew.

Am home, what shall I look forward to next? Can't imagine anything to rival this gathering, although I *was* three hours late (nobody TOLD me the freeways don't work around Portland)... which I still regret immensely... wow, where to start? I was very impressed with my Tim singing Bold Orion (almost spelled it O'Rion) and the ABCs... I was sorry I didn't get to sing more or the songs I'd been thinking about singing and that I missed the opportunity to get an education about WHAT I sing (like the ones I can't sing along to any more - what key IS it I sing them in?) and so on... I was really looking forward to picking the collective Mudcat brain!

Guess I ought to start a new para about now, take the written equivalent of a deep breath...

Oh, and mousethief, I too have the body of a god, Venus - the Willendorf Venus, that is!
And thank you so much for this great gathering, wish I'd actually made it for dinner et alia, but would really appreciate something to remember it by since I forgot my camera for the whole trip, idiot that I am.

BTW, I love the term "mrrzettes" - will have to start using that!

It was great to meet everybody that I did get to meet, I gather I missed some... I have particularly strong memories of whatever than monestary pattersong was, need some hints to find in trad as no lyrics stuck, of Thomas the Rhymer's version of Willie of Winsbury (a Willie song in which he neither dies nor kills! rara avis indeed) and of ChanteyMatt's version of Beer, Beer, Beer, including a beer version of Do Re Mi which I'd never heard before... and the time spent with Amergin (not to mention his music) was precious indeed.

Sigh of bliss...

And now, back to work. Yikes. Syllabus and first lecture, here I come.
After I check into what's been happening on the Forum...

Well, the weekend warrior-ette dragged her sorry self home finally!! Not too much more to add other than I got a chance to listen to the digital recordings, they are great.

Our mag's beautiful voice carried over wonderfully. I wondered if that glow and passion she sings with would show up on the recording, and boy does it! Honey doll, you are better than apple pie!

Thomas the Rhymer, gentle soul, I've never heard e-flatGAD sound quite so lovely. *smilingjen* I'll be in front row with Mouse and kin.

chanteymatt, where to start? All I can say is that if you finish that Benadryl song, send along lyrics. It's a must-learn!

Stewart, a wonderful musician, and has an eagle-eye for the equipment too, he's a keeper. (The microphone is still alive, despite being stepped on!)

Benjamin, navigator, there's not another soul I'd rather be stuck in Friday afternoon Seattle traffic with, and after hearing you play, next time you'd better BRING that guitar!

Mouse and kin were fantastic hosts, put us all to work and made us feel right at home. Gawbless the missus and the wee meeces too, darlings every one of them. PM with your snail-mail address and I'll send you copies of the recordings. Good stuff.

So sorry to have had to make tracks before getting to spend more time with the Mrrzbunch and Amergin. MUCH agreed on the Mrrzmusic. It's not every precious precocious little man who can lead our motley bunch in tha alphabet song (and make it sound good!) Hope you enjoyed your visit and come back again soon!

I also must needs point out that Mouse modestly skipped himself; between us, we all had quite a repertoire! And we had such fun admiring each other's guitars -- Rick woulda loved it. No accordians or banjos happened to show, but there was the aforementioned bodhran.

I didn't do pictures; JenEllen did. I've got about 3 hours of tape (one RTR and two cassettes) that I need to distill and I'll try to get some mp3's or something posted as soon as I can.

What a wonderful evening! A delightful bunch of people, good food was et, good drink was drunk, and a hell of a lot of GREAT music was made!

Thank you everybody who came for making it a wonderful gathering!

To Mrrzy and the Mrrzettes who are as Amergin notes a wonderful trio! We especially loved the singing one of her sons did for us -- he said he was a little nervous, but he did a fine job! We've got the makings of a musical family tradition here!
To Amergin and his wonderful hand-crafted songs! They're just as lovely to hear sung as to read on Mudcat, only 17 times more so!
To JenEllen who sang backup vocals, and brought lots of fresh tomatoes and peppers from her own garden, as well as absolutely delicious pies. She also recorded part of the festivities -- hopefully she will be able to post some songs as well. (Maybe we should burn a CD?)
To Mag who sings beautifully and plays a pretty mean guitar too, and helped a lot with the cooking and setting up, and also brought a crate of fresh peaches (and I have your museum thingee ... PM me with a snail-mail addy if you want me to send it along)
To Thomas The Rhymer who is a wonderful harmonist, and who entertained us with beautiful songs (all in DADGAD tuning!) and his mellifluous voice! (you left your jar/drinking implement: I gave it to Amergin) Let us know next time you're singing at Seattle Folklife and if we can be there, we'll be in the front row!
To Stuart whose silvertoned voice and nimble guitar and violin playing wowed us all - the song about the egyptian monk was worth the price of admission twice over! And we're still crying about the Dutchman!
To Chanteymatt, who had some great sea-songs, some great bodhran (sp?) playing, and fine guitar playing -- thanks also for the Zinfandel (my favorite grape!).
To Benjamin, who entertained us with his rendition of "Norwegian Wood" as well as other songs, provided a lot of backup guitar and vocals, and great conversation.

Have I missed anybody? Mrrzy's friends who came to make sure she got there all right, and had to leave far too early, but they certainly ate their fair share of the food! (the broccolic plant you asked about is called "Sedum" -- Mrr, can you pass this on to them?)

I think listening to and performing music with a small group of friends in a friendly place is just about the most fun you can have in a vertical position. YOU ARE ALL WELCOME BACK AT ANY TIME, make no bones! And Mrs. Mousethief sends her love to all, as well.

Thanks everybody for a GREAT evening!

Alex

Then, I had a great time last night at the Gathering....for those who were not able to make it...you missed out....I had the distinct pleasure of meeting mag, Alex, who looks as if he is trying to compete in a Bill Sables lookalike contest.....JenEllen...who looks like I pictured her...absolutely beautiful...TTR....who seemed to have more energy than the kids....Chanteymatt...Benjamin....and one or two other....(sorry if I omit you....with my head still swirling from the fun last night.....you can't expect me to remember everything can you?)...

Well, thank you Alex, for hosting this years event....

Sounds like this is going to be One Glorious Clambake!!

And it's a Major League, World Class, Industrial Strength Bummer that I'm going to have to miss it. But here I still sit in this flamin' wheelchair with my left leg sticking out like a bowsprit, and it takes a derrick, a troop of Boy Scouts, and a quart of goose-grease to get my otherwise scrawny carcass in and out of an automobile (not to mention a bathroom not especially set up for a wheelchair to maneuver in).

But I will be there in spirit, and I am looking forward to the future.

LOL! Silly boyos!

No, I promised Signore Topolino a few tomatoes from the garden to top his enchiladas. There were more than a few out there. Can tomatoes have a glandular problem? I dunno, anyway, I have spoken with them, and they are more than willing to give their lives for Blood Mary. Vegetables, gotta love'em.

The pies are blackberry and apple. Somebody remember ice cream.

Ones without tomatoes. :)

Things with ice and citrus are especially nice, especially on hot days (which it seems extremely unlikely we'll have!). Gin-n-Tonic (avec beaucoup de lime), Margarita, Daquiri (but the latter only when fresh strawberries are in season!). Preferrably not things that make you thirstier.

One of my faves is a little liquour thing -- I'll have to make sure I have all the ingredients on hand. Just disgustingly sweet, but wonderful for winter nights when you're snuggled up on the couch with a comforter and a good book or sewing project.

Everybody needs to ooh and aaah at the new windows, too. Blasted things may never get paid for, so they'd doggone better save us money on heating, as well as be impressive to look at (or should I say through?).

Do I need to provide mixers? All I have in the house is tonic water. (The soda water keeps getting used for Italian Cream Sodas.)

Amergin -- I don't really have a favorite poison, there are so many. I am partial to wine (esp. the really dry (but not at all sour!) red varieties like Zinfandel) and various mixed drinks (separately of course), and can exist quite happily with soft drinks as well!

My thing with beer and coffee both is the bitterness. I must have been born with an expecially sensitive bitter-detection system.

I think another NW gathering is definitely a good idea, I'm really unhappy that I have to miss this one because I think it's amazing to actually meet Mudcatters in the flesh, and because IMO singing and playing music together is what it's all about.

Hopefully this will be but the first of many NW get-togethers, and people who can't make this one will make future ones!

well, gang... had a brief chat with Mrzzy tonight.. she's in Vancouver, BC, Canada!.. across the border fine... hoping to get together tomorrow night (tues)

but alas, i won't be able to make the gathering on the friday, i have a gig to play on one of the gulf islands (Pender) and have to catch the ferry at the ungodly hour of 9am saturday.. (i think)which means being there for 8, which means leaving my house about 7.. god this is getting worse as i type it!, oh well,,, such is the life of a performer.. and who knows what time we'll stop the party after the performance.. last year it went on till 3am!.. makes for a long day....

anyway, what i am trying to say is.. that i'll miss the gathering of the northwest clan!!!!

well, my door is always open (when i'm here) so if you ever get a chance to come north to canada, let me know.....

have fun all.....

Bring munchies or soft drinks, if you want to bring something. JenEllen and I are fixing dinner for everybody, but we will probably need something to munch on as the night wears on. Also beer; I don't stock any beer (not being a beer-drinker (eewwwww nasty stuff)) so if you want beer, bring your own.
