Subject: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 07 Aug 01 - 06:43 AM I used to run Newcastle on Tyne Poly Folk Club in the early 70's. One club night the students union had booked Richard Digence and Silly Wizzard on the same night as our club. Imagine our surprise when they turned up at our pub mid-way through the first half. Apparantly only 10 people had turned up so their concert was cancelled and when they were looking at the notice boards they saw us. I asked if Digence wanted to sing he said no ! later on he decided he wanted to sing so we told him 'nae chance' cockney prima donna that he was. Also a similar thing happened when I ran Aylesbury Folk Club when we told John Ottway to piss off/ |

Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: Skipper Jack Date: 07 Aug 01 - 02:39 PM I ran a folk club in Skewen, nr Neath in South Wales in the 70's. One of the guests was Silly Wizard. There were 11 in the audience and few floor singers. But these lads from north of the border did us proud. They performed virtually all night without complaint. Years later, when they were well up the ladder of fame. Both John and Phil Cunningham were booked at my club in Swansea. They remembered that night in Skewen and said that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and that it offered a good chance for them to practise their repertoire!!

Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: John MacKenzie Date: 07 Aug 01 - 03:39 PM I once had the pleasure of throwing Dominic Behan out of the Hammersmith Folk club at the Prince of Wales, Dalling Road, way back when it was run by a guy called Rod Hamilton. Very enjoyable, in fact I'd love to do it again. Jock |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:57 AM Actually Silly Wizzard didn't want to play either. I think they were in 'miserable bastards' mode after their gig being cancelled. However our guests for the night were John Leonard & John Squire and they played a storming first set. i think thats when Digence decided we had a decent audience the 'Cockney Prat' that he was. He then had the face on and sat in the lounge getting pissed I think Silly Wizzard came in and a least enjoyed the night. |

Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: KingBrilliant Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:26 AM And how could you reject John Otway??? I'm shocked and amazed! He's wonderful. Kris |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:34 AM I'm not nurturing a grudge, Digence was a prat the fact that he's a Cockney just adds to it.Yes I have been informed Ottway is good he just tried to muscle in on the basis of the I'm a star bit again he was asked nicely refused and decided to try and pull rank. |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,Kjell Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:44 AM I remember fairly recently a famous ejit starting to sing a particulary rude version of "Yesterday" and being booed until he shut up - does that ring any bells ;-) kjell |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: KingBrilliant Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:45 AM Ah, well if he was being a prima donna then fair enough. Kris |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:59 AM I resemble that famous ejit !! I was asked to sing it by John Brindley (at Cleckheaton). The song does work in the right context at the right time usually in a late night sesh when most folks are guttered. It was, in hindsight, however the wrong place, the wrong time, the wrong moment in fact embarrassingly wrong. |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: KingBrilliant Date: 08 Aug 01 - 08:10 AM 'embarrassingly wrong' would make a good thread subject - or have we had it before? Kris |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 08 Aug 01 - 08:36 AM Around 1971 my old friend Keith Brown, who founded the Louth Folk Club, turned away Mike Oldfield as he wanted to perform with an electric guitar. |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 08 Aug 01 - 09:24 AM Just remembered another one,my mate Mike Wild tells that the the Grapes Folk Club in Sheffield turned down Paul Simon cos he wanted £7 10shillings in the 60's and no-one had heard of him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 08 Aug 01 - 09:43 AM In the eighties I refused to let many members of the cast of Emmerdale into the ABC cinema in leeds - well they didn't have tickets. It didn't go down to well with the manager |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: Skipjack K8 Date: 08 Aug 01 - 09:47 AM Well, oh usherette from hell, let me tell you that they're filming Emmerdale in our 'dodgy lock ups' in Holbeck in late August. But we're away on hols, so I won't be able to get Fraser Hines autograph. |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 08 Aug 01 - 09:52 AM You won't be able to get Frazer Hines autograph anyway they killed his character off about 4 years ago nice that you've kept up to date |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 08 Aug 01 - 09:52 AM I was the accident prone usherette. 3 trips to the hospital in the 18 months I worked there. i once fell fron the top of the balcony all the way down to the front spilling popcorn and kiaora, jungle fresh and all me little tubs of ice cream. I got a round of applause from the audience. I also fractured my skull in the fridge room when a hatchway fell on me. I also got electrocuted by the popcorn machine......ah.happy days! |

Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: pavane Date: 08 Aug 01 - 09:58 AM Skipper Jack - Was the Skewen club held at Skewen Rugby club? If so, that must have been where I saw Boys of the Lough. (Neath resident) |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: Willie-O Date: 08 Aug 01 - 10:51 AM Maybe I'm just an elitist suck-up-to-the-stars type, but if I was running an open stage event and someone that I knew was really really good (famous or not) came in late and wanted to play, I'd accommodate them. After all, it doesn't happen that often, and there is (one hopes) an audience to consider--people come to these nights not just to see their friends perform, but because there's the possibility of a pleasant surprise. I've seen open stages where the host performs a lot--sometimes the host is also the best performer present--and if they are in true "host mode" they make sure the audience gets any treats available. Subject: RE: BS: Famous Floor Spot Rejections From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 08 Aug 01 - 10:58 AM Wullie, there is a balance and my basis for discussion is those who are for want of a better word up their own arses. The initial occassion as I've said the 'stars' were asked and declined then wanted to. The other side of the coin is when Keiron Goss was just sat in Fagans ,without a guitar and on 'a night off' ,at a sesh and was more than happy to play. |
