Subject: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Aug 01 - 01:39 PM I have to admit I'm a little stalled on this one... see, 4th Street is playing a benefit for the local Crohn's/Colitis society (or whatever they call themselves)... Do you think The Ramblin Rover would be too risqué at this gig?
Those unfamiliar can read the song here |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Pinetop Slim Date: 08 Aug 01 - 02:31 PM Probably, but maybe not. Can you hold it for the second set as an optional number -- play it if the mood seems right, junk it if not? |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: MMario Date: 08 Aug 01 - 02:41 PM I don't think too risque - but perhaps a touch insensitive? Though if they have a sense of humour they might well appreciate it |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Aug 01 - 02:45 PM I'm counting on the humour... anyone else? ;-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 01 - 03:56 PM Clinton, First, I think its a question of what the rest of your set list is like. Second, depends on how you got booked for the gig. Not flaming here, but you don't seem to even know the name of the organization you are doing a benefit for, so how much do you know about the potential audience? Do you know what the organization (and the disease) you are doing the benefit for are about? Finally, when the gig was booked, what sort of parameteres were you given? Do you know who previous performers who preceded you in years past and what their music is like, that sort of thing? |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:09 PM Guest... a chum of mine is organising this thing with some people he knows... We got booked for the gig yacking with him a few days ago at Walmart... There were no 'paramaters' given... I don't know that there have been "years past" at all... Quite frankly, I don't feel that I NEED to know everything there is to know about a group to play a benifit for them... the audience is gonna be mostly folks off the street, shelling out 5 bucks each for a good call near as I can tell... and well... the rest of the set list is folky-progressive-rocky-slightly-goofy fun... ;-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: MMario Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:13 PM go for it clinton! My comment before was because it sounded as if you would be playing for thier society itself - but if it's more a fundraiser type thingie - people off the street are going to enjoy that. |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:24 PM That's what I'm thinking, but I also don't wanna offend "suits" that might be there... Who am I kidding? What do I care?!?!?! LOL!!!! |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:33 PM I too assumed you were playing for the society members. But from what you said in follow-up, you still seem at least marginally concerned about "suits" in the audience? Well, if its a fundraiser with some society members (ie there will only be one or two in attendance, if any), I wouldn't worry, as they aren't your audience. But then, I can't imagine any suits OR society members being offended by Ramblin' Rover either, so I guess I'm just plain baffled as to why you asked in the first place? I mean, the song ain't exactly X rated... |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:36 PM Why I asked... because I can see it going either way, and there are some people here at mudcat who's opinions I value... that's what this place is for... |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 01 - 04:42 PM Clinton, I'm sorry if I inadvertently offended you, it wasn't my intention. I too appreciate the diversity of opinion at Mudcat. So, if I'm not being overly inquisitive, what I'm not getting here, if you aren't playing for a group of (presumably?) older, conservative, blue haired church ladies, what do you mean by "going either way"? I mean, this is a fun, silly, innocuous song that most music audiences would enjoy. What sort of person do you suppose would be offended by the lyrics?

Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Clinton Hammond Date: 08 Aug 01 - 05:07 PM No offence taken here Guest... And it never ceases to amaze me how many people can be offended by something that many other people thing totally innocuous.. and I'd hate to reflect poorly on the site, and my chum who's organising by inadvertantly offending some tight-assed 'suit' or other... And well, I was curious what Mudcat's take on the whole ting would be... And well, it's too hot here to do much but surf the net anyway... Just shooting the breeze... ;-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 01 - 05:15 PM Clinton, Am signing off here to go sit in air condo meself... I wouldn't worry about the "C" word--I think many audience members might even think you added the rhyme especially, just for them and the ocassion! No need to let them think that you are anything but brilliant, y'know! Good luck with the gig. |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Murray MacLeod Date: 08 Aug 01 - 05:49 PM Guest, Clinton is being sensitive because the song contains a line "When you're crippled with arthritis and your bowels have got colitis" (not exactly how Andy wrote it but near enough). Hence his praisewothy hesitation. I would say however, go and do it. But if there are any bollockitis sufferers in the audience , you might want to think again ...... Murray |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: DonMeixner Date: 08 Aug 01 - 05:58 PM We have some mudcatters that have Ulcerative colitis, I'd leave it up to them. Me, I wouldn't and I'll go just about anywhere during a job. Don |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Murray MacLeod Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:35 PM I have just checked Clinton's link to the DT and the lyrics as given are riddled with mondegreens. "When barkin' was no pleasure" should read "When parting was no pleasure" "In delight of all creations" should read "ta'en delight in all creation"
"To the good friends that were treasure "You're gallopin with balacitis" should read "You've got galloping bollockitis". Jeez ........... Murray |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: Liz the Squeak Date: 08 Aug 01 - 06:40 PM Can it be any worse than our production of 'The wizard of Oz' at the local mental hospital - I mean, standing in a room full of people not quite all there, blowing raspberries and dribbling, and singing 'if I only had a brain....' I'd go for it.... they probably won't even notice! LTS |
Subject: RE: Help: Opinion RE: The Ramblin' Rover From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 01 - 08:34 PM I think many may well notice, which is why Clinton asked. I think he clarified the issue by telling us colitis sufferers and their loved ones would not be the audience for the gig. Once I had that piece of it, I thought performance of the song, based on what Clinton said the set was like, would fit fine and might even be a highlight of the show. If the gig were for the society itself, I myself wouldn't perform the song, and would have said so. Murray, The "C" word I referred to was "colitis" and yes, I understood from the beginning who the society was...
