My brother taught me that song a generation ago and I've enjoyed it many times just playing it in my own mind.

I don't know if I knew that was a Tom Paxton gem. I'll bet he knew.

That G-Am-Gdim-G progression is a bit more harmonically sophisticated than Tom usually gets. It works perfectly, though.

Maybe we DO need those "steenkeeng chords." :)

At least, the guy who introduced me to this song used a chord pattern that walked up the guitar neck and wasn't your basic 3- or 4-chord pattern.   Anyone got 'em?

Iain MacKintosh sang it on his first album 'By Request', which appeared on a German label (Autogram) in 1974.

I've always sung it as McColl (as in Ewan)!

As I learned the song aurally, distortion is possible, but I always liked the image of Tom and old Jimmy Miller out on the town together!

In the first chorus, that would be "crowd" rather than "crown", I think? As well, I thought McCall was the tree-climber, not Bacall? That's just from my memory as well, I don't have the songbook to hand. I'll look it up tonight and fill in the blanks.
