Subject: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: GUEST,Folkie Dave Date: 09 Aug 01 - 02:05 PM Hope you don't mind me asking, but following a conversation with a friend last night, we came to the conclusion (after several beers) that at least 80% of Folkies are Guardian readers. May I do a quick straw poll to confirm / deny this? Thanks for your time Folkie Dave (A Guardian reader) |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 09 Aug 01 - 02:41 PM From: Lion When I'm at home (B'mouth) I read the Mail or for a real newspaper the Times. It seems that most newspapers are more interested in the size of one's breasts than anything that might affect local or national interest. When I'm "here" I read the Rocky Mountain News. What an odd question though. It's hard to believe that anybody calling themselves a"folkie" would disdain the news. However much we might disagree or be disgusted or whatever, isn't that why we have letters to the editor? |
Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: vindelis Date: 09 Aug 01 - 02:47 PM When I had time to read a paper, it was The Independent. These days this site is as good as any newspaper, and far more interesting. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Aug 01 - 03:08 PM Well Dave, part of the problem with the question you ask, is that the reading of some papers is a dead giveaway, while the reading of others is likely to attract scorn from people who think they know better. I have always found that most folkies have a leftward leaning politically, so I guess that they would read the papers appropriate to their political views. I myself am a Telegraph reader, and was once castigated for reading a right wing Tory rag, but I find it contains a good balance of stories, and also realises that football is not the only sport played in the UK. The crossword is good too, and also I know bias when I read it, and treat it as such. Good luck with proving your theory. Jock |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: Airto Date: 10 Aug 01 - 07:23 AM I'm not from the UK but here in Brussels I buy an English paper most days. First choice is The Independent. A similar political colour to the Guardian and far better racing coverage. When back in Ireland I go for the Racing Post (Joninull, a soulmate!) and the Irish Times, but to be honest the Irish papers have become very dull and rather smug. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: Grab Date: 10 Aug 01 - 07:30 AM Rarely get papers these days - read the BBC news site every day, which is enough for me. From: 8_Pints Date: 10 Aug 01 - 06:58 PM I never buy any tabloids, and will only read those with good sports coverage (usually the "ToryGraph") if away on business. Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: GUEST,colwyn dane Date: 10 Aug 01 - 07:57 PM I don't buy a paper but read one of three that are usually left in the works rest room: 'Daily Wail', 'Cracked Mirror' or the 'Blue Nun'. I receive the 'New York Times' headlines by email and I infrequently dip into the on-line editions of the 'Irish News', 'The Jakarta Post','The Sydney Morning Herald' and for Scottish football reports I go to the 'Daily Record' site. I think Giok is right about the 'Daily (S)Tory' in that its coverage of sports - including underwater speedway -is, perhaps, the widest of any newpaper in the UK.

Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Aug 01 - 05:29 PM I get The Guardian, primarily for the Steve Bell cartoons.
What I'd like would be a paper significantly to the left of The Guardian, but with the news values and the sense of humour of The Telegraph at its best.
Bring back the News Chronicle (which was shut down in 1969 I think.)
Or maybe a daily version of The Oldie would do. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Aug 01 - 05:35 PM I put the blue clickies in just in case any people in the rest of the world wanted to have the remotest idea what we were talking about. And the clicky I put in for The Guardian, appropriately enough, had a misprint so it didn't come through in that last post. (My misprint. Maybe I've been taking the paper too long...) |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Aug 01 - 06:36 PM Here's a link for all the Guardian crosswords you could wish for; and here is the loink for Telegraph crosswords, which I think are better.
Not that Mrs Duck will have time to do them, with the ducklings racing around. But the links are here anyway, for anybody who does have the time. |
Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: GUEST,Cavia_P and Glevum Date: 14 Aug 01 - 08:00 AM We prefer a broad sheet paper because it fits our Guinea Pig hutch better than the tabloids. [and what the pigs do to it should be done to most newspapers] Currently we get the Yorkie Post (and do the crosswords), because we've got money off vouchers for it. [ We have to save the pennies for decorating our new/old house. ] Some Saturdays we get the Daily Excess, but only for the TV Guide. Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: Gervase Date: 20 Aug 01 - 08:46 AM Guardian weekdays, New Statesman Fridays and sometimes the Observer at weekends. I wouldn't wipe my fundament with the Mail, Express or the red-tops (and I've worked for most of 'em), and while the Telegraph is amazingly comprehensive, I find its features and op-ed pages merely get me ranting and muttering "Oh, for goodness'sake!" at their twee middle-classness and Europhobia. A win double for the Telegraph would be "How an evil Brussels dictact will double the cost of keeping a pony and force you to pay your nanny the minimum wage". |

Subject: RE: BS: UK Catters; what newspaper do you read? From: Ringer Date: 21 Aug 01 - 05:34 AM Hey, McGrath, can you actually do the Guardian crossword? I can often finish the Saturday's Telegraph by the following Saturday (if my wife joins in, it's "usually" rathern than "often"). There's a chap I see in the pub who's recently been made redundant & now spends most of the day doing the Guardian Xwd: he's usually got somewhere between 2 & 6 left undone by the evening & sometimes I'll "help" him: but I am almost always unable to do any, and even the ones he's done I frequently need explaining. So if you can do it, you go up (were that possible!) in my estimation. |
