The 40th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival is right around the corner - August 24 through the 26th. They have a great lineup this year (as they do every year) and you can check them out on the web - Philadelphia Folk Festival

This Sunday on my TRADITIONS program, 3 to 6pm Eastern Time on WFDU-FM - ( WFDU-FM ) my special guest will be the legendary Gene Shay. Aside from hosting one of the best radio shows on the air, Gene is one of the founders of the fest as well as the annual emcee. His record for consecutive years as emcee will be unbroken - eat your heart out Cal Ripken! Gene has also produced a brilliant 4 CD set of recordings from the 40 year history of the festival that will be available at the fest and nationwide in September.

Gene was gracious enough to talk to me about the festival and preview the new CD release. If you can't join us this Sunday, you can get a sneak preview here at Mudcat - WFDU-FM

So, how many Mudcatters will be attending the fest? Will there be any meeting place? I am going on Saturday 8/25 and I would love to meet some of you.

Ron Olesko WFDU-FM Producer/Host Traditions

This will be my 21st. You're right Ron ,it is a great lineup this year. Wonderfull to hear Gene will be on your show.

I'll wear my Mudcat t shirt on Saturday 8/25. Are you camping? If so,stop by the DHARMABUMS camp. We'll be by the lower camping entrance(bottom left in the campgrounds).

Jeff"Hyla" will be with us also.

Looking forward to meeting you & other Catters.

DB.

Oh, man, I sure wish I could. I didn't discover folk music until just before I left my hometown (Philly) for the wilds of Oregon and beyond, so I only went to two Festivals (I think it would have been 1980 and 1981 or thereabouts), but they were fantastic. I miss yiz!

Aloha,
Mark

DB-

I will look for the Mudcat shirts! Unfortunately I'm not a camper and I'm probably going to drive to the fest for Saturday only, although I might come on Friday if I can find a room somwhere. I am really looking forward to the festival. The workshops look great as well as the mainstage performers. It will be another case of wishing I could be in three places at once!

Ron

Utah Phillips is scheduled and I just realized I will be away. Had hoped to get there...next year, once again.

It's coming up this weekend. Any other Catters going?

Can't wait to see Utah Phillips. He was scheduled to be there last year, but because of health problems he was unable to attend. John Hartford filled in for him so it wasn't TOO much of a disappointment.

Ron Olesko,How about noon Saturday in front of the cd sales tent. Look for the Mudcat T shirt.

Ron and Dharmabum, I do plan to be there all 3 days, but not camping. I may not be there as early as noon Saturday, though. I think I'll try to make the afternoon and evening cocerts, for sure. If somebody needs a place to stay, I think you could stay at my place. Most of my housemates will be camping at the fest. We live only half an hour away, in Blue Bell. PM me, and I'll give you phone numbers for me.

Marymac

I'm not a camping person - I need to be near an ice machine and cable tv in order to get a good nights sleep!! Plus I have a collection of those little soaps!

Seriously though, are there any good hotel/motels near the festival site? It looks like I can only be there on Saturday, but I have an outside shot at making Friday as well.

Ron

Nothing that would qualify as "nearby", Ron. They use hotels in Valley Forge or King of Prussia for performers and other non-campers, Ron. VF has a convention center, so I think it comes with all the usual chain hotels and motels. Plymouth Meeting is also not too far away, but I actually live closer than these places.

Let me know if you change your mind about "roughing it" at my house. I do have some little soaps and shampoos that I could leave out for ya!!!

Best regards,

Marymac

You mean you guys don't find sleeping on the side of a hill & the odor of a spot o pot baking in the hot afternoon sun an appealing thing?

Ron, here's a couple of hotels in Pottstown Pa it's only about 12 miles to the fest. I lived in Schwenksville/ Spring Mount/ Collegeville area for 30 yrs. P.M me if you need directions. If you want to do a search yourself it's in Montgomery county 45-50 miles west of Philly. 36 miles east of Reading Pa. Where I currently reside. Oh by the way I'm truck driver in the northeast and listen to WFDU as much as possible love your show and Keith Mohair's blues show. I might make Brombergs show I hope. Hkynut99@aol.com

Thanks for the tips Joe! I will check it out!

And thanks for listening to WFDU! I was wondering, I presume you are listening as you drive through the area. How long do you get to listen to us? I know we supposedly have a 50 mile radius of the transmitter but it must be hard to pick us up in a truck! Thanks for listening!

Ron
