More Shatner trivia ... which I'm amazed hasn't come up before now.

Any Canadians who are, say, 40+ (?) may have studied Shakespeare in high school using the Swan publications illustrated with photos from 'our' Stratford's productions. The 'Julius Caesar' one has a photo of a production in the 50s with Lorne Green (yes - Pa) as Caesar (or Brutus? Caesar, I think) sitting at a campfire, with William Shatner as 'the Page' ...

So if he was good enough for Stratford ...

Nice horsies too.

What, he didn't trust Stewart with one of his precious horses?

Yes, it was very obvious Shatner was at home in the saddle. I remember mentioning it to my hubby at the time, that he must ride extensively.

"He's dead, Jim."

"Beam him to Loblaw's, Bones. It's mainly...because of...the meat."

A couple bits opf Shatner trivia.

In his lean days (so to speak) post-Star Trek and pre-Hooker, Bill did commercials to make ends meet. He worked for a Canadian grocery chain called Loblaw's (owned, of course, by Robert Loblaw, or "Bob Loblaw" to his friends). The slogan was "It's mainly because of the Meat" -- can't you just see him emoting that?

He did use his own horse in the Star Trek movie he did with McDowell and Patrick Stuart, while Stuart rode a livery-stable hack. Anyone who knows horses could see he had a clue in the saddle -- and yes, Spaw, it was a beauty.

Do any of you know the Japanese cooking competition show called "Iron Chef"? It's an inadvertently-campy show, set in "Kitchen Stadium", where outside chefs challenge one of a team of house chefs to a one-hour cookoff, Samurai style, to produce 5 courses with the week's mystery ingredient. It's a hoot. Apparently they're gonna do an Americal version set in Las Vegas -- and Shatner will be the emcee.

Here's some Shatner trivia:

William Shatner went to McGill University in Montreal, as did I. One year when I was there, there was a referendum held, and the student body voted strongly in favour of changing the name of our student centre building to the William Shatner Building.

I never understood the legalities of it all, but the university administration pulled rank and wouldn't let the students' council change the name of their building. Nonetheless, we all referred to it as "the Shatner building" from then on.

No, I'm not telling you how I voted.

Ah, great geeks think alike. I had a huge crush on De Kelly when young, and I adore Brent Spiner!

Shatner was good in Miss Congeniality. He's usually good when playing smarmy; he gives it a light touch of self-deprecating humor.

I'd have to agree that he is absolutely the WORST at directing himself in movies. I can't venture an opinion on his writing, as I have been too afraid to open even one of his books.

My favourite Star Trek episode was "Who Mourns for Adonis" and I think that Shatner was quite good in the 1970 TV movie "Sole Survivor" which was a ghost story dealing the spirits of the crew of a crashed plane waiting for the one survivor to join them.

My best friend sucked me into Trekkie-dom in high school. You haven't lived until you've seen the outtake reels from TOS and TNG. I've said it before and I'll say it again: William Shatner be damned, Brent Spiner was the sexiest damn man on that show.

Of course, I do tend to go for the metalheads *grin* Not.

When I was taking a law course years ago, we had a couple of days in court to watch the proceedings. A local town drunk was up on charges and when it came time for his sayso, he took out his wallet, flipped it open and said, "Beam me up Scotty."

Little Hawk,

As you probably already know, the reason there were a "few interesting plots" on the first Star Trek series is that several of the major science fiction/fantasy writers had a go at scripting an episode or two. If you still can get it in reruns, check the credits sometime--some very famous names are included there.

My favorite T-shirt says, in shaky green letters, "He's DEAD, Jim. You take his tri-corder, I'll get his wallet."

You'd be amazed how many young people I have to try to explain that to!

Yep. It came with Patrick Stewart. If you look at other space shows from the 60's, Star Trek holds up pretty well, actually. Between the fist fights and flirtation scenes they did manage to come up with a few interesting plots here and there. My personal favorite is "The Trouble With Tribbles", which was done mainly for laughs. I like the scene where the Klingon officer informs Mr. Scott that he did not say the Enterprise was "a garbage scow", but rather that it should be "hauled away AS garbage!" The results were entirely predictable...

Which was that folk song you were trying to find the origin of bobjr? I had a scout round and I couldn't find the relevant thread or post.

The thing is, most song requests get answered pretty quickly, and unless it throws up some point of controversy or discussion, the threads just die away. Whereas these get longer because once they get longish people drop in to see what is going on, and see something the want to comment on - like me now and they get longer still. And I can't see any harm in that.

As for Captain Kirk - it's a pity maybe they never had any equine aliens, with all those fine horses ready to join the cast. Mind, they'd probably act the pants of him. And whatever people say, a singing horse would have made a better job of singing Bob Dylan. (Better than Captain Kirk I mean...)

But he wasn't there to act or sing anyway. He was there to make sure that everyone kept their feet on the ground out in space. The world wasn't yet ready for a starship captain who could act. That came later.

Spaw - I don't think I ever saw the TV show. I saw the movie. Ask me who acted in either, and I haven't got a clue. Besides which, I wouldn't recognize Richard Basehart if I bumped into him at the mall. I'll take your word about it, either way.

Peter Lorre ALWAYS makes a great sidekick!

I think your suggestion that William Shatner record "Space Oddity" is an inspired one! Would you like a position on the board of the WSSBA? Great ideas like this are what we need to get things really rolling around here.

What the hell are you talking about Hawk? If it's "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"....the TV series starred Basehart, but the movie starred Walter Pidgeon with a memorable portrayal of his scientist sidekick by Peter Lorre.

I think Shatner should cover "Major Tom, Psychotic Astronaut" 'cause it's righ up his alley.

I saw that movie when it was released in Skaneateles, New York, in a theatre full of kids making so much noise that you could barely follow the film...which was hardly worth following anyway. The theatre owner actually turned the film off halfway through and said the audience had to either settle down or get out. They half settled down. It was a pretty lousy movie, I'd have to say.

Special Announcement!!!

The ribbon-cutting ceremony has just been completed on the:

* * * William Shatner School of Bad Acting * * *

Almost everyone was there to witness this prestigious occasion! Well, quite a few people were there... Well, more than you might have expected...

Anyway, the WSSBA has now been launched, and will endeavour to perpetuate the extarordinary acting techniques of William Shatner, immortalized as James T. Kirk, Captain of the starship Enterprise (several of them, in fact).

The WSSBA is located on the grounds of a former mental asylum in beautiful Orillia, Ontario, Canada, and is fully equipped with McGill portable toilets.

I feel that in time this facility may eventually rival even the NYCFTTS in its scope and popularity.

We hope to have William Shatner himself here for a special dedication ceremony in September, when we erect a life-size statue of him in his starship uniform.

When asked to attend the ribbon-cutting, he politely declined, protesting a busy schedule. His parting words were "Piss off!", just before he hung up on us. He must have really been quite busy...

Mudcatters are invited to tour the magnificent facilities and brush up on their thespian skills at the earliest possible opportunity. Register for classes NOW!!!

bob jr.

when and in what thread did you ask about the origin of a folk song? Chances are that you didn't get replies because people didn't know about your request - since a perusal of your postings shows only one thread created in the last year - which means you posted your question (if it was within the last year) in a thread about another subject.
