For those still reading here's where we intend to camp:

As you head from the main entrance toward the Pecan Grove, you pass the race track and horse barns and end up facing a stop sign at the edge of the Pecan Grove oval. Across the street ahead of you is a "double arrow" sign. We plan to be just to the right of that sign. Look for multi-colored pennants a'la used car lot. Looking forward to seeing all of you there.

We just came back. The Scamp is #207 in line. There were about 40 campers behind us when we left Sunday afternoon. Deanna is going back Wed night, I'll be there Fri night...See you soon. Bill

Gary, Karen, mom Norma, Lynn, Bill, Wyo Woman, Blisk and Deanna, Kaleea, and Bluegrassgirl-- Camper's cranked down. Van's packed. Washtub bass is loaded in the pickup. Groceries are packed. Beer's in the cooler.

I got just one thing to say to y'all:

See ya at Winfield!

Lin & John

LOL! Sorcha, the Ninnescah Yacht Club has 400 sailboats at Cheney Reservoir, 35 miles west of Wichita, plus an American Cup racing yacht tied up at the headquarters downtown. Probably a third of the sailboats would have bunks--maybe we could tow a couple to Winfield?

Only problem is, the Walnut River usually only has about 4 inches of water there in the campground. Of course, as I'm sure you know, there ARE years where we've seen the campers floating! (Are you SURE you can't make it this year?)

WyoWoman mentioned a zoo--maybe we should build an ark?

Bill D.--Actually, they started lining up for Land Rush LAST week; just won't be "officially" lined up until this Saturday (Sept.1st)! We figure there will be about 500-600 in line when we get there on Monday, and by Thursday (Land Rush day), there will probably be around 1,000 campers & RVs waiting. Little did Mr. Redford know what he was creating all those years ago, eh? But so far everybody's found "room to pick" and it seems like the music just keeps getting better around the campfires. You might give some thought to coming to the next one, just for an update (not to mention a heck of a lot of fun)!

Blisk--Yeah, thank goodness for WallyWorld, although as I mentioned before, John tries to avoid going into town at all. It still cracks me up that the Dillon's store in Winfield has a whole rack of music-related items in amongst the groceries! I think the Festival probably puts most of the businesses in town in the black for the year...even though the residents grumble about being "invaded by weirdos."

Floating the Scamp sounds like a great idea, if the River is deep enough... And if it's as hot as it was last year, it would only be a step out the door to cool off! :>)

An-ti-ci-pa-tion.....

Lin & John

Really, somebody ought to look into renting out house boats for the week.........could make some $$.......wonder what Bob would say about that! I wonder, could you even find a house boat in Kansas?

good gloryoski! lining up for a week in advance? I attended the first 11 festivals (lived in Wichita), and it boggles my mind. I think there were 4000 at the first. I have traveled from Wash. DC back for two others, and I KNEW it was getting popular, but this is scary!

Ah, well....hope you all find room to pick....

Of course anything you forget can be gotten at wally world. I guess Bob is worried about where to put everyone. We are thinking of putting floats on the scamp and camping on the river. It's alot less congested! Midnight on the Water could take on a whole new meaning. We would have running water too! Oh well, See yuns soon. Bill

Bill--

Oh Lord--40% over last year??!!! Man, it's gonna be CROWDED, huh?

We've decided to head out Monday morning (3d) to get in line. Can barely wait; gonna be a lo-o-on-g weekend! We keep adding things to the list...may take an 18-wheeler to get the camper mobile, if the wheels don't fall off first. Not to mention the van and the pickup. John has this theory that we should pack everything we MIGHT need, and then a few things more. Of course, there have been times he's guessed right, and I've been real glad to have whatever it was I wanted to leave home and he stuck in at the last minute!

Now, where the heck did I put that other cooler? And where did we hide the dome tent last year, just in case...?

Lin

WyoWoman--

I just sent you a PM, hopefully giving you reasonably good directions to Gary T's camp and ours. You might want to holler at Gary; he may be able to be more precise.

If you're planning on buying a ticket that includes camping for a night, they should let you into the campground with your car, no problem. Ask them at the gate how to get to the Pecan Grove, and go from there. As I mentioned in the PM, though, you'll probably have to take your car back around once you've unloaded, as parking in the campground is at a premium, and by Friday night may be impossible.

The sooner you can get there, the better, of course. And sleep? At Winfield? Only if we get flooded out!

Yup, I'll be there, albeit briefly. I have to go to the company picnic on Friday. It's from 4-8. I could maybe get away by 6 or so and get down there by .... what? It's about three hours from Topeka, right? And then ... HOW THE HELL DO I FIND GARYT, et al in the dark? And how do I schlepp my tent, sleeping bag, etc., over hill und dale if I can't park anywhere close? Are there bluegrass sherpas?

Maybe it would make more sense to go early in the a.m. on Saturday? ... Come wake all y'all up, being all cheerful and bright and early and such.

Details to be worked out anon.

We always manage to hit Hatman Jack's at least once, just to see if they have anything Lin can't live without...

If we can't find you "on the edge", we'll definitely say hello at Hatman's.

Only one more week to Labor Day.

I will be there too. I would like to meet some of you. Haven't been on Mudcat for several months but me and Banjobenny camp in the same area. One the Edge which is literally on the edge of the pecan grove. We will try to find you all.

Can't wait. I will also be working in Hatman Jack's booth this year so maybe stop by there and say hi. Ask for Janet

Y'all best get ta movin' t'ward the WVA FESTIVAL.

We talked to a young dulicimer player (she was hammered) tonight who said she got her camper in line for a campin' spot two days ago, and she was number 4.

The lineup doesn't officially start for another week, but we'd expect a good 200 in line by the time they "officially" start linin' up.

By the time they quit linin' up, a week later, and start lettin' people in to grab their campin' spots, we should have about 600 through the front gate, an around a thou by nightfall.

This is the 30th anniversary, so I'd guess we should expect a good crowd - about 20,000 or so. And 70 percent of them'll be trying to camp on the 10 acres there.

We're expecting some good (COSY) pickin'.

John

Kaleea--

Any idea where you'll be in the campground? Pecan Grove or Walnut Grove?

Maybe when we get a little closer to the date (good grief, it's only two weeks to Labor Day!!!), we can set up a rendezvous point for everyone to meet? I'm planning to have some (amateurish, but legible) Mudcat buttons and stickers available for identification, if anyone would like one...

And please come visit us, south side of the Big Oval in the Pecan Grove. If we get the same spot as last year, we'll be directly behind the Rollin' R wagon. See you there.

We hear you, Bill--we're getting antsy too. We probably won't make it before the 4th, though, and it may be Land Rush day.

Are you planning to be near or at where you were last year (behind Stage 3 I think)? If so, we'll likely stop & say Howdy at least once (we don't get out of the Pecan Grove very much, I'm afraid--and that civilized Walnut Grove is just intimidating to us heathens, ya know).

We've got about 15 different packing lists going so far--starting to get the pop-up, the van, and my pickup ready to go.

See y'all there!

All right, Gary--we'll be looking for y'all. And I'd bet we won't have to browbeat WyoWoman too hard--get her started on a couple of campfire picks, and she'll be there for the duration!

See ya at Land Rush (can hardly wait).

Lin & John

Oh, yeah, we'll be there--Karen and I and her mom, Norma, friends Lynn and Bill and others I'm sure (gotta make some calls soon!). Wyo Woman should make it, but we may have to browbeat her into extending her planned stay. We'll try to be in or near the spot we had last year, next to the double arrow sign as one enters the Pecan Grove from the road around the racetrack/barn area (coming from the main entrance). We may arrive Thursday the 6th, or possibly Wednesday evening and get in the land rush line.

We're thinking of hosting jams both Friday nights, 8:00. We were delighted to meet Lin and John and Sorcha and family and several others whose names escape me, hope to see most of you again (we'll miss you, Sorcha) and meet some more Mudcatters as well. Y'all come down now, y'hear?

For those who haven't been before, info is here. Don't debate it, just come. The earlier you can make it, the easier it is to find a decent campsite. Hope to see you there!

Okay, people--it's less than a month to Land Rush!!!

Who's gonna be there this year? Gary T.? WyoWoman? Bill?

We're planning on showing up on Sept. 6th for Land Rush, or maybe a couple days earlier to wait in line. We should be able to snag our usual campground, mid-way down the south road in the Pecan Grove. You can find us by the "Jig Is Up" green banner, and this year we're adding our new street sign, so we'll be at the corner of "Been There" and "Done That." Drop by for a song, a beer, and a hearty welcome!

Anybody else?

Lin and John in Kansas
