Subject: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: Mrrzy Date: 14 Aug 01 - 10:10 AM OK, WHO is the modern/contemporary artist who did that lovely wall thing, I don't think it's a painting, maybe an etching? Bas-relief? made out of all straight lines that end up suggesting/representing five conquistadors? I believe it (or other art by same) was in Ronald Reagan's collection, if that helps, it didn't help me with my Internet search... thanks! Songs about unknown artists welcome! |
Subject: RE: Help: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: Mrrzy Date: 14 Aug 01 - 09:38 PM Aw, c'mon, somebody must know! Interesting polysyllabic name, possibly eastern European? Cause I got them steadily-depressing, low-down, mind-messing, can't-remember-this-guy blues! |
Subject: RE: Help: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: Helen Date: 15 Aug 01 - 01:16 AM Gustav Klimt? Only he painted, not etched lines. Art Nouvieau, sort of. Thought you might have meant Mondrian by the thread title but he mainly did boxes. More description would probably help. Is it a European artist, or an American artist with a European name. What is the medium that the piece is done with - ceramic, porcelain, metal, etc. Time-frame? Any other clues? Helen |
Subject: RE: Help: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: Grab Date: 15 Aug 01 - 10:51 AM Wassily Kandinsky? But he was a painter IIRC, and into non-representational stuff - geometric shapes and interesting textures and transparency effects. Graham.

Subject: RE: Help: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 15 Aug 01 - 11:06 AM Are you thinking of one of Picasso's "Don Quixote" series? That's one man on a horse done in minimal number of strokes? RtS (when I think straight lines I think Mondrian or Riley but they are abstracts) |

Subject: RE: Help: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: Mrrzy Date: 15 Aug 01 - 11:53 AM Active in the 80's - very contemporary, apparently Modern Art was the wrong term, go figure... definitely not painted. 5 conquistadors on horseback coming towards the audience, seeming to charge right out of the medium at you. Etching or a lithograph or a drawing - no color, just white background and dark, straight lines, but not the Picasso thing that is what it reminded of too. What Reagan had may be a repro, probably from a San Francisco gallery... Wassily Kandinsky is the right kind of name, but not him. |

Subject: RE: Help: NonMusic - Artist with Straight Lines? From: Bardford Date: 16 Aug 01 - 01:33 PM Seems to me Jean Paul Riopelle was doing something similar, although I don't know that he worked on very large pieces. Quebec-born (circa 1923-28) abstract painter/lithographer who is in New York, I think. Bardford |
