Subject: Shared TV Worlds?
From: John Hardly
Date: 19 Aug 01 - 10:44 AM

The TV theme song thread got me thinking about the phenomenon of shared TV worlds

For instance;

1. Beverly Hillbillies were in the same TV world as two other sitcoms---what were they?
2. Rockford files shared TV worlds with which other private eye?
3. What two other sitcoms were in Laverne and Shirley's world?
4. Anyone remember which character from M*A*S*H had a short-run series?
5. Law and Order just shared cops from another series. Which one was it?
6. What is the longest-continuously-running "world" on television?
7. The new Dick Van Dyke show "Diagnosis Murder" (and a sorry-ass, lame, career capping series it is) combined the "worlds" of what private dicks?
8. Much to Archie Bunker's chagrin, whose world did he share?

Anybody know of other shared TV worlds?

1. Petticoat Junction was one. Was Green Acres the second? 3. I think the other was Lenny & Squiggy 4. There were actually two. Don't forget Trapper John M.D. The other show was A*F*T*E*R M*A*S*H - I think it was Radar and Colonel Potter? 6 Another World 8. - also Maude

#4, didn't Jamie Farr get a show too-- but was he Klinger or someone else?

And on #5, they have SVU swaps and I suppose the new one coming will swap too.

Don't forget Sesame Street and the Muppet Show and the Muppet Babies and the movies...

#1 was indeed both Petticoat Junction (as a young boy who'd have given up my basketball for an hour inside the watertower with Betty, Bobby, and Billie Jo(s)---though I was too young to know why!), and of course, Green Acres (Bugtussle as I seem to remember)

#3 Yes Happy Days. This was a more common way to "share worlds"--a true spin-off (As opposed to the Bugtussle connection that shared creators but weren't true spin-offs). Happy Days spawned L&S. The other one in this world was also spun from Happy Days.

#4 You mean there's even MORE obscure TV than even I remember!? I had "Trapper John M.D." in mind.....didn't even remember A*F*T*E*R*M*A*S*H <<<<<--------or was that a joke I was a little too dim to catch?

#5 Indeed. Homicide

#6 ...as Michael Feldman says,"All the questions have been painstakingly researched....though the answers have not." I didn't even think of Soap Operas (not having been a fan m'self). Chronologically (with the long hiatus between Star Trek and the Next Gen) the one I had in mind probably doesn't hold a candle, though in consecutive years I bet it does. This calls for some real internet research....

#8 is answered right so far. I think there's one other answer though.

#4 I believe that Trapper John M.D. aired while M*A*S*H* was still on the air. They only used the character's name - the actors had no connection with the series. From what I can remember, Trapper John M.D. ran a few seasons. A*F*T*E*R*M*A*S*H* ran considerably less - in fact I think Klinger did join Radar and Col. Potter on the show.

I may be in a minority on this one - but I still love the original book and it's first sequel more than the TV show and the movie. The movie was one of my favorites.

#8 Maude was Archie's cousin.

AfterMash was Col. Potter, Klinger, and Father Mulcahy. Radar was never a part of it. John Hardly - Bugtussle was where the Clampetts moved from - Hooterville was the setting for Petticoat Junction and Green Acres. The other show related to Happy Days and L&S is Mork and Mindy. Mork was featured in a Happy Days episode. Archie Bunker shared his world with two shows - Maude and The Jeffersons.

Wasn't Mork and Mindy a spinoff of Happy Days and/or Laverne and Shirley?

Not as long as Star Trek but Cheers/Frasier is going on 20 years.

Didn't Magnum make an apperearance on Rockford?

Here are a few "TV World" questions:

1. What character from NYPD Blue had a short-lived spinoff? Its failure did not hurt his career.

2. Here is a really obscure one. TV veteran Harry Morgan stared in a sitcom called "Pete and Gladys" in the early 60's. It was a spinoff from what show?

3. And a really easy one. What was Gomer Pyle's hometown?

Subject: RE: BS: Shared TV Worlds?
From: RangerSteve
Date: 19 Aug 01 - 07:32 PM

Pete and Gladys was a spin-off of December Bride. Gomer's hometown was Mayberry.

JohnH - you're right, it is sad. I probably couldn't remember my blood type if I was bleeding to death, but I do know that Smiley Burnette (Charlie the engineer on Petticoat Junction) and Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney on Green Acres) both were Gene Autrey's sidekicks in the movies and on TV, respectively.

Porridge had a sequel series going Going Straight (I think) in which Norman Stanley Fletcher was having to get by out of jail.

The Young Ones spawned Bottom.

The Likely Lads after a decent interval gave us "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads".

And of course there were Trumpton, Camberwick Green and Chigley, all with great songs.

Yes Steve, I got to this one late, but I remember December Bride and knew of the Gene Autry connection. And to answer your question.......The Danny Thomas Show, previously known as "Make Room For Daddy"....Starring Danny Thomas with Marjorie Lord as Peg....You can hear the theme music can't you?

Earl,
Yes, Magnum was introduced on Rockford Files.
And Mork and Mindy was spun from Happy Days.
And the Cheers/Frazier combo-TV-world was the long-runner I had in mind.

I can't believe I didn't have the Mayberry connection in my original question.

Weren't Dallas and some other 80's night-time soaps sharing the same world?

Alright,

What early 60s show's TV world started in high school and ended in the army?

The show that introduced Candid Camera to television had an announcer whose spoonerized name became a coveted object on Rocky and Bullwinkle. What was the show and who was the announcer?

And the NYPD Blue question should have been Hill Street Blues, but I've given it away.

Rhoda was spun off from the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Remember what was spun off of the Carol Burnette Show? (I hated it!)

Also from Soap?

As for the rest of the above..you all are way older than me! LOL!!!

Mama's World from Carol Burnette. What show did Carol Burnette come from?

Benson from Soap.

What other two spinoffs from Mary Tylor Moore?

kat, Benson was spun off from Soap and it didn't half a tenth of the originality of the Mother show, I seemed to degenerate into a feelgood sugar sweet mess every week.

I still thing Mary Tyler Moore is a babe and I wasn't old enough to watch the Original shows...

Caro Burnett came from "The Garry Moore Show" which also gave "Candid Camera" it's start. The annpuncer was Durward(sp) Kirby and the Bullwinkle spoonerism refers to the Kirwood Derby.

Earl & Ali UK,
Mary Tyler Moore's boss was Lou Grant, who later got a show of his own.
Rhoda, we already know about.
Is there another? The only other character I remember was MTM's younger sister. (OH, and the unseen Carlton the doorman)

Earl, would your high school to college show be Dobie Gillis? Just fishing here. But I love this!

Oh, let's see, a question...OK, I may be on thin ice with this, but how about two soap opera parodies, one a spinoff of the first? (If I'm wrong, I'll sing all three parts of the Rice Krispies trio simultaneously, while eating a bowl of Maypo.)

Yes Mark, Dobie Gillis. A wonderful show when it was wonderful but by the end, young as I was, I knew it was crap. I watched anyway cause, like, what else was on.

I'll guess at your question and if I'm wrong at least I know what's for breakfast. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Fernwood Tonight?

Well, Earl, either we're both wrong or we're both right. I wasn't sure if Fernwood 2Night (gotta spell it right!) was actually a spinoff, but I seemed to remember Martin Mull on MHMH. And I do believe MHMH was set in that lovely town.

But just in case we're both wrong...

Snap say it's crackle that pop's the sound,
You snap have crackle when pop's around.
You can slap cackle hoppin'
When the clap buckle poppin',
Snap! Crackle! Pop! makes the world go round!

All right, I'll go quietly...but I want my Maypo!

Aloha,
Mark

The real shared TV world is contained in the news programmes, where the same characters turn up in all kinds of related contexts and dramas. Sordid confessional dramas about sex romps with teenagers. High level political dramas in palaces meeting with characters from other political soap operas. Sporting events. Comedy routines with saxophones. Big dramatic crowd scenes in Belfast. And that is just Clinton.

With Bush you've got out-takes from Planet of the Apes, Doctor Strangelove and the Beverley Hillbillies.

And as for Blair - read this from today's Guardian, "Blairs' retreat is porn film haven", which is a plot straight out of One Foot in the Grave (and I just provide the link, because the Guardian, unlike some publications, has a permanent archive with free access, so that link with work if someone ever revives this thread in the future).

well, to answer my own question (cause I hate to see it go unanswered):
Dallas spun Knot's Landing and some soap that took place in Denver (I think) and was about the Carringtons? but I don't remember the name---just one dreadful scene of Linda Evans and another HORRIBLE actress catfighting 'til they ended up in a pool (I never saw the series--just some outtakes and promo stuff)

...honest.

This may be stretching it a bit, since technically it is the same series (but not in some ways), the episodes of "The 2 Doctors", "3 Doctors" and "5 Doctors" would fit the Shared TV Worlds, or is that Time and Space Continuum?
